16:9 HDR or 21:9 non-HDR?

Dear honourable pilots,

I searched around a bit on this forum and reddit but I couldn’t get a conclusive answer on this.

The market/choices for 21:9 HDRs with Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) is rather tiny and they’re also very expensive. So we’ve to choose one of these features.

Would like to hear some opinion of what would you prefer more?
a) A normal 16:9 monitor plus HDR or
b) An ultrawide 21:9 monitor minus HDR

P.S. we don’t need to discuss about G-sync / Freesync. I don’t think they are useful for MSFS2020 because of our lack of high-speed panning/swivelling like in CS:GO. But do let me know if I’m wrong

Cheers pilots

I use a 49“ widescreen non HDR Dell since 2019. Must be 21:9.
I would never change it to a 16:9 again. Not for money and not for fame.
MSFS is beautiful in widescreen format. Next step is VR in my opinion.

24:9 non HDR. Would definitely not play with a 16:9 anymore.

21:9 inch or better either that are you take the VR route.
16:9 is still being widely used but after upgrading to 21:9 never going back to 16:9.
You get more immersion and it works nicely with head tracking.

21/9 is the sweet spot, HDR doesn’t really make a huge difference in visuals.

I have a 21:9 with HDR (but only basic DisplayHDR 400-level), and I’m really enjoying the HDR as much as the extra pixels at the side even though the darks aren’t as good as the brights, and the brights aren’t as bright as a better set could provide.

If you specifically are interested in a good HDR picture, I would recommend you optimize for that. But keep in mind that HDR complicates screenshots, screen recordings, and broadcasting so if that’s a thing… beware

I love my 21:9 monitor but HDR is what really brings it to life.

I play on a 4K HDR TV with 16:9 ratio…

I never have a 21:9 monitor in my life… So I can’t answer which one is better. But I know for sure that HDR is better than non-HDR.

I got a super wide HDR display after mostly using IPS displays. I’m honestly not impressed by HDR, and wish I could have found that panel size in IPS.

But, super wide screen is awesome.

Maybe try playing without HER for a while on your current monitor and see if you really notice it?

21:9 with HDR, have HDR off because I don’t really like it.
Would never go back to 16:9.
My recommendation is, get the widest you can afford… peripheral vision is finally playing a role like IRL

Go for the ultrawide. I am playing on a g9 super ultrawide with hdr and it looks insane.

Definitely an ultrawide. I use a 35" Acer Predator Z35P and I can’t imagine going back to 16:9 anymore. The extended view in planes, cars and even shooters is simply irreplacable. I personally don’t care about HDR, the game looks amazing as is.

Oh, and check to see if where you work has any company discounts. My company had a very good corporate discount with Samsung, so I was able to get a solid discount on a G9 myself.

You can get a non ultra wide HDR and fake an ultra wide resolution for simming

I use a massive HDR 4k tv as my computer monitor and when I wanna use it for msfs I go to Nvidia control panel and switch to a custom ultra wide 21:9 resolution, so it’s letterboxed. Can’t get hdr with custom resolutions but it’s still worth it for the FOV.

Why do you need it letterboxed by removing the pixels from the top and bottom? Why not just zoom out to have the same FOV horizontally but you still get the screen space vertically as well?

I’m literally turning it into the same aspect ratio as an ultra wide monitor so the question you’re asking applies to anyone who wants to use 21:9 aspect ratio over 16:9, you can just give it a try and see why we enjoy it

Thanks for the suggestions. It seems HDR is still nascent and most of the folks here love their ultrawides.

I am surprised that you guys that like the ultrawide don’t mention the night lights. I have a 32:9 monitor and the lights don’t scale at all and gets super blurry.
I only fly in windowed mode because of this. I guess it will be fixed when they release proper support for multiple monitors.

This game does not switch to HDR automatically like some other games such as FarCry do. I guess it’s due to always running in a window. This means Windows must be run in HDR mode when starting the game. Windows in HDR is very hard on the eyes so I don’t use it even though my monitor supports it.

After trying HDR and Not, I didn’t think HDR was anything special. Nice, but not essential.

If it’s possible. Could you all state your HDR spec ? I see that there are the following choices:

  • uncertified HDR
  • DisplayHDR 400
  • DisplayHDR 600
  • DisplayHDR 1000

Thanks
