170 GB base sim install? Why?

Yes, back on topic I think it’s a splendid idea you have to separate a lot of the content manager data from the base program. That way you could download the extra planes and airports as desired not all at once.

You can’t there’s some kind of protection on copying any data or backing up windows 10 won’t allow it

I didn’t mention “copying” at all.
Because you can’t.

I backup all the time using Acronis True Image.

Well I’m running the Steam version, can merrily copy the packages wherever I please and point to them when starting the sim… have done that ever since I first bought the sim!

Like I say, the issue discussed here is downloading a lot of packages one may not require in the first place…

I’m too lazy to look all the way through this so sorry if this has been said but I just pointed the download towards where I installed the game and it fixed from 171 to 22. Hope this helps!

Fine. Copy all you want.
But other users who don’t have the required knowledge should not be
encouraged to attempt to do something that can have serious results in
their FS2020 no longer working or even being repairable. Or even their whole PC.

When copying is not required

I used to use Acronis True Image for backup purposes but their most recent versions are “forcing” users to include cyber protection. Well I already have a very trusted virus/cyber protection method so I moved to a more robust and reliable backup platform that is not Acronis. and Acronis is SLOW… so slow…

BUT, a good backup that you have personally tested will be a blessing if you ever need to recover MSFS.
I just helped a good friend purchase and install MSFS and it took us about 15 minutes total because I had a MSFS backup that I could put on his computer.

Sorry Ron,I didn’t mean that to sound how it came out! I just meant the steam version seems to make things nice and easy.

So just for my own learning because I feel like I’ve missed something, you mean that you can’t copy the MS store version of the FS2020 package files to another drive, delete the originals and point the sim to the new location when you next launch it?

There is 2 Threads running simultaneously.
From the other Thread:

It is blocked for a specific reason.
There is no need for a user to access or modify these files.

Under Settings, Apps and under Microsoft Flight Simulator,
you have the capability to do anything you need to do.

Move, Uninstall and then under Options, repair or reset FS2020.

<----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Above in this Thread I stated:

For MS Store:

The download program will download the initial 1.6 GB which is installed on the
C:\ drive.
(Actually the boot drive. The boot drive is the drive you have Win 10 installed.
it is the drive tat Win 10 boots from. Can be any drive, F:, M:, T:)

After this is downloaded and installed, the download program will ask you where you want FS2020 installed.

You can tell it to install on a different drive other than the boot drive
if you want to. This s the additional 170 GB of the download.

I had my install go to:
1.06 GB to the C: drive.
Additional 170 GB to the D: drive.

I had a C:\ drive failure. Installed Win 10 to a new SSD.
The D:\ drive was not affected.

Went to MS Store. Selected install.
Download program downloaded the initial 1.06 GB.
Then asked where to install FS2020.
I said D:\ drive.
Screen flickered for an instance and FS2020 loaded and ran.

I was surprised because I was expecting to have to download the additional 170 GB.

Also, due to a motherboard failure, replaced the MB. FS2020 would not load and run.

I went to Settings, Apps and under Microsoft Flight Simulator App,
clicked “Uninstall”.

The “Uninstall” deleted FS2020 from the C:\ (boot) drive.
It did not delete FS2020 from the D:\ drive.

Same thing. MS Store downloaded the initial 1.06 GB.
Asked where to install the additional 170 GB.
I said D:\ drive.

Immediately, FS2020 loaded and ran.

Very interesting, and educational! Had no idea that this was possible.

I’ve been considering reinstalling my copy (together with a clean install of Win10) and if I decide to, I’ll definitely refer to the options that you described here.

Thanks!

I am not.
I am currently using MS Store version.
My explanation , and I have done it more than once in this forum , is valid for MS STORE version.

Greetings

I do happen to Own Steams version but I have Not installed it yet… waiting for new Laptop to arrive.
Why ?
Because i feel better If i can do with my files whatever I want.
So go Steam it is for me.

Greetings

Above is the complete quote.

Below is your quote but not the source. Oh. it is you.

And in this Post:

So, do you or do you not?
Selective quoting is deceitful.

I think you now the answer to this.
You have read both"threads"

I clearly said that I own and currently use Ms Store version and my explanations are valid for that particular application.
I also said that I ALSO own this title in Steam Platform, and put pictures about it , I said clearly that I have NOT installed Steam version yet.
Finnaly I also said that The steam version is there waiting for a new Laptop to Arrive.

What I did not say is that when I am finished with the New Steam/Laptop Install , I will get rid of MS Store Version to never return unless it is strictly necessary.

Simple , or what ??

So , who is deceiving who ?

In fact , I also own a third version of MSFS but that story is a topic in itself. Maybe I will post about it some day.

Ok. ----------------------------- It is a complete sentence. …

My pleasure Sir.
Greetings

I was quoted, so I will respond.

(1) My error, I re-read his Bio and it said “Current Fsim FSX Steam edition”
I missed the FSX and thought he had stream .

But that was not the relevant what the other responders had in any case.

The OP was asking about finding flightsimulator.exe, and I had stated that for the MS Store version, finding it was difficult, as it was hidden in a folder, that even the PC admin, does NOT normally have access to.

Then it snowballed from there !!! (sigh)

In any case, the link I posted in the other thread, is probably the answer to what the OP was seeking .

My apology to everyone for continuing this Thread but:

My concern is why (via MS Store) any user thinks he needs to modify the protected files.

They do not need to access/change those files.

Any reader of this Thread should not accept this as needed.

@CroppingPoem113,
Sorry your Thread got high jacked.
But, only Asobo can answer it.

Agreed … The information is available, and its up the users to decide what they will do, and not do with their PC.
Messing with file permissions, or even the Registry, has the Potential to messing thing up pretty badly …
If nothing else, owning and running any of the MSFS version, encourages you to become more computer literate !!

Thank you very much for your post MSFSRonS, very informative and useful! Greatly appreciated.

When I first installed the Sim, I just left the defaults in place and put everything on the C: drive.

Is there a way that I could easily “split” or separate my install into two parts as you have described here? What would be the best way to accomplish that?

Sure.
Go to:
Settings, Apps
Scroll down to the “Microsoft Flight Simulator” App
Click “Move”
Tell it which Disk to move it to
