I know this has been covered before, but please god…
It’s my understanding that the vanilla base install of FS2020 includes ALL the packages from content manager, even if I don’t want many of them. Is this correct? If so, please god WHY is this the case?
I’ve just today had my D drive fail on me after only 3 months (Sabrent Rocket Q… I should have spent more…) so I decided to take the opportunity for a spring clean, fresh install of windows on my C drive (Samsung 970 Evo Plus) and start again. FS2020 was on D so need to reinstall from scratch.
My internet speed is a healthy 70Mb/s, it’s still going to take me all day to download this… SURELY MS/Asobo could make the core install just the basics and three aircraft (152, TBM, Airbus? something like that) and then I can CHOOSE to install the extra aircraft, airports, PG data, etc later on.
I know I’m suffering a bit from 21st century “I WANT IT NOW!” syndrome but surely this would help most users have a quicker install / choose when to download the data they need? What about people with data limits or lower speeds on their broadband?
Just feels this could be made to better to meet the “no pilot left behind” ethos.
Anyway, I guess this is a question for the next Q&A if we want an actual answer…
Rant over.

Why don’t you make a backup copy of the D: drive.
Restore it locally.
FS2020 (MS Store) will not care. If it is there, MS Store download will not
download it again.

This is true Ron, it would help me a lot now if I had a recent backup on my NAS. I take meticulous backups of all our work and personal computers, but until today my FS2020 rig hadn’t made its way into my list!
But my point is about the download size in the first place, before one even has the files to make a backup.

I have 6MB/s internet so cry me a river there buddy. It took me a week to get MSFS downloaded. I’d love 70MB/s.

Exactly! Every GB helps, right? Wowzers 6Mbps!
I hope there’s some important reason the install has to be so huge, otherwise… just why?!
This makes his suggestion even more relevant, tbh.

I agree eliminating content manager stuff on initial install would help. What helps me most is the ability to incrementally download items. I don’t care to leave my PC running at night and set up some downloads before bed, wake up the next morning and check on it. Utilize normal low usage times for the big files.
Oh I’m on board with the suggestion 100%.

Because the “Update release Notes are “Inaccurate” "
It is inaccurate to state that " al little bit of this” and “a little bit of that” was improved
Fact is that in every update that I have seen so far ( last 3 I think ) practically the whole base of the sim has been changed.
There are “basic” folders ( huge ones ) like fs.base… that are revamped.
This is a problem of design and NOT a consecuence of how wonderfull the software is.
In any case I have prooven myself that you could borrow from someone else the basic xxx Gb of Official folder , inject into your own empty one and start the sim. It will recompile and download/update only needed files.
This IS ok. I have done it this way from the beginning.
I suppose there will be soon a market/exchange of the contents of this folder to be passed hand to hand between users.
Nothing to do with the “kernel” or “Core” or “Loader” of the Title that is about 1 gb+ and is then one containing “Proof of purchase”. Mainly “FlightSimulator.exe” wich is necessarily updated every version ( contains the version code )
Go find a buddy in your neigborhood … even 200 miles away will do the trick.
And remeber to take that xx Tb Usb disk ( need 100+ ) with you when you do so.
It will take 30 - 60 minutes to copy over the folders so consider this in your schedule and bring some Tea/Milk/Orange juice + cookies with you.
Greetings

This game has only one map, but the map is rather large.
For MS Store:
The download program will download the initial 1.6 GB which is installed on the
C:\ drive.
(Actually the boot drive. The boot drive is the drive you have Win 10 installed.
it is the drive tat Win 10 boots from. Can be any drive, F:, M:, T:)
After this is downloaded and installed, the download program will ask you where you want FS2020 installed.
You can tell it to install on a different drive other than the boot drive
if you want to. This s the additional 170 GB of the download.
I had my install go to:
1.06 GB to the C: drive.
Additional 170 GB to the D: drive.
I had a C:\ drive failure. Installed Win 10 to a new SSD.
The D:\ drive was not affected.
Went to MS Store. Selected install.
Download program downloaded the initial 1.06 GB.
Then asked where to install FS2020.
I said D:\ drive.
Screen flickered for an instance and FS2020 loaded and ran.
I was surprised because I was expecting to have to download the additional 170 GB.
Also, due to a motherboard failure, replaced the MB. FS2020 would not load and run.
I went to Settings, Apps and under Microsoft Flight Simulator App,
clicked “Uninstall”.
The “Uninstall” deleted FS2020 from the C:\ (boot) drive.
It did not delete FS2020 from the D:\ drive.
Same thing. MS Store downloaded the initial 1.06 GB.
Asked where to install the additional 170 GB.
I said D:\ drive.
Immediately, FS2020 loaded and ran.

with my 5MB/S took only 10h so dont know how it took week for you if the different is just 1MB/S
A 90GB download at a perfect steady 5MB/s takes 42.9 hours, so you lyin. That’s just math.

I think there could have been some MegaBYTE (MB) / MegaBIT (Mb) typos going on here!
Or perhaps they thought I have 70Megabyte p/s! I wish!

hmm i dont know about that but when the game was released it took just 10h and 120gb with 40mbps internet which is roughly 5mb/s
I checked the unit used by task manager, my internet is around 5Mbps.
yes then its another story if you have just 5mbps.
you can calculate your speed by deviding 5:8 which is 0,625Kb/ps which is very slow, propably your phone has faster connection, have you tried that ?
I had to get a phone that uses internet (VOIP) to even have a phone. I live in a cave. (Not literally, but you know, as far as access to comm lines.)
We digress slightly… I’ll ask this question in the next Q&A and see if it gets any votes. Would be interesting to hear the team’s thoughts on it!
