172 (Steam Gauges version) flaps should start at 0 deg, not 10 deg

Mine always start with 10 deg (non-G1000 Asobo 172). 10 deg is not for a normal takeoff. 0 deg is. Please make it so.

As far as I remember by the POH it is recommended to depart with flaps 10. Need confirmation. Real world practces might differ for sure.

Kind regards.

Depends on the model.

The 172N POH says flaps UP for normal and short field takeoffs and the 172S POH says UP-10°.

In the real world, checking flaps position is part of the before take-off checklist so I don’t see the problem.
It depends on the runway length, surface and altitude what degree of flaps to choose.

Just RP that the previous pilot didn’t reset them to 0. :wink:

Skyhawk 172S normal is 0 deg. Is this plane supposed to be a 172S or other model?

I don’t go through the entire preflight routine in a simulator. Waste of time unless I am trying to practice it.

Don’t know where you’ve got that info from. That’s the quote from a 172S IM:

Normal takeoffs use wing flaps UP - 10°.
Using 10° wing flaps reduces the ground roll and total distance over an obstacle by approximately 10 percent.

You are right that the POH says that.

I am going by what I learned from my flight school which is 0 deg for normal and 10 deg for short field or soft field.

So that raises a question of whether most schools teach 0 deg or 10 deg for a normal takeoff at a typical airport. I bet 0 deg. And, if so, should that be the default in the sim? I know it is in X-plane. Why assume that 10 deg is a better default?

You can change this yourself if you modify the runway.flt file

FlapsHandle=033.33
LeftFlap=033.33
RightFlap=033.33

change to zeros

FlapsHandle=000.00
LeftFlap=000.00
RightFlap=000.00

Thanks, that’s a good workaround in the meantime.

Are you starting from the runway and not the ramp/gate? If so, it sets the flaps to 10 by default everytime. If you don’t start on the runway, the flaps should be set to 0.

One weird thing about this is that the G1000 version starts at 0° on the runway. I’ve always assumed that the G1000 and steam gauge version are the same aircraft but with different avionics.
I know that both have checklists that say 0° or 10°.

The Cessna 172 doesn’t need flaps for a normal takeoff, but some POHs recommend it while others don’t. At issue is safety: some argue that taking off with the lower stall speed of 10 flaps is safer, while others point out that doing so introduces the risk of stalling later due to pulling the flaps up too early (particularly while in a turn). I have always believed in the latter and don’t advise using flaps on takeoff except for special circumstances like short field. Plus typical low-time pilots don’t need the added distraction of flaps in the takeoff environment (and half the time they run around with them hanging out because they completely forget to retract them.)

I don’t use flaps for takeoff in the 152 either. If I have any of the AI assist features such as checklist or takeoff assist, then it becomes a real battle to the death over which position the flaps should be :laughing:

Yeah, I hear you. For me, I’d follow the POH…if we had a POH.

The C-172 (Steam Gauge) starts with 10 degree flaps.
The C-172 (Glass Cockpit) starts with 0 degree flaps.

The above is an Asobo decison / mistake.

What you do in RL is to make sure the flaps are set to what you want them to be, before you take off.

You DO NOT rely on their current setting being what is required. (ie did you forget to retract them after the walk around !!)

Same in the sim, you SHOULD make sure they are in the correct position as part of your pre-takeoff check.

Even more so in a MSFS plane that has State saving – they could have been left in any position after the last flight,

Runup Before Takeoff

    Cabin Doors - CLOSED/LATCHED.
    Parking Brake - SET.
    Flight Controls - FREE AND CORRECT.
    Flight Instruments - CHECK AND SET.
    Fuel Shutoff Valve - ON.
    Mixture - RICH (IN)
    **Trim - SET FOR TAKEOFF.** <--------
