2 K vs 4 K monitor

Hello!

I would like to ask for your help. I want to buy a 32" monitor. Should I buy a 2k or 4k resolution from a 32" monitor? In terms of quality, how visible is the difference between 2k vs 4k on a 32-inch monitor?

If there is no big difference, I would prefer the 2k resolution because it is cheaper. However, it is important that the visuals of the Flight Simulator are perfect.

Thanks

If you’re looking for the best visuals, then I would recommend a 4k HDR monitor. You might have to go a little larger than 32" but you can also look at LED TV’s as their price points are very reasonable these days.

Depends on distance you are from the screen and the size of the screen. At most desk distances a 4K vs 2K you will want the 4k on a 32" screen assuming your computer can handle 4K.

If you are sitting on your couch across the room from a 32" screen you are not really going to notice 2K vs 4K.

If you are interested this link goes into detail on screen size resolution and viewing distance.

HDR with decent contrast is extremely expensive, though, and HDR without decent contrast is, well, not really HDR.

Personally I’m playing on a non-HDR 32" 4K/60Hz VA monitor. The size and resolution are very good for flight simming (and also for my job), and I’m glad I went with the higher resolution, rather than buying a smaller HDR monitor for probably more money.

Also it depends on your eyesight. I recently discovered I was suffering eye problems. I mentioned to the optician in passing about gaming, and they explained how that could be making things worse.

I switched to a 2k monitor and my sight is much better after a few months, less tired too and the added bonus of much better performance.

Another thing to consider is PC performance. It might indeed be nice or preferable to be running at 4K instead of 2k, but if that difference pushes your PC beyond what your it can deliver the overall experience may be less enjoyable.

I have a 3080 ti video card. It is important to get a sharp image. There are so many monitors, it’s hard to decide. I don’t know what would be the best monitor for Flight Simulator. I don’t want to spend a lot…

I went for the LG 32” 2K with a 3080 and I’m very happy with it.

I’m running MSFS on a RTX3070 myself, that should be enough to run in 4K on High-End quality, and have some leftover GPU capacity for watching YouTube videos on the side.

If you “don’t want to spend too much”, stay away from high refresh rate monitors, and consider going VA rather than IPS, and you get easily find a good 4K screen at your size for 300€-ish.

edit: wrong quote

I’ve got a 32 inch 4K Samsung monitor paired with an RTX 3080. Its great. I’m a sucker for 4K visuals so would definitely recommend it if your hardware can handle it. Its all about budget and your hardware at the end of the day.

running 4k visuals is a big draw on hardware, I have 2*4k screens but find myself turning down the resolution of games to 2k and turning more of the fancy effects on

Nice, but what about the rest of your system?

  • Intel Core i7-12700K
  • ASUS PRIME Z690-P
  • Corsair 32GB /3600 RAM Vengeance RGB PRO
  • EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA

2k ( 1440p ) is still a good compromise.. sufficent resolution and much less necessary system power.

More future proof is 4K. You can see a difference, but as others already mentioned - depend on the distance you will not see that. If you want each tiny detail, then go with 4K ( or just “near” 4K like my 3840x1600 LG 38’ )

Actually, I’d highly suggest a 34-inch ultra-wide monitor instead. The 21:9 widescreen is much more immersive for MSFS than the 16:9 of a 32-inch widescreen, and the 3840x1440 resolution is a little easier on video cards than the 3840x2160 of a 4K monitor. Pixel density is quite good and the image is really sharp.

I can never go back to normal 16:9 monitors. My work screen is a 4K and I really miss UWS.

(Plus it’s like having dual monitors when you’re working, but without the bezels in the middle!)

this resolution I checked and its nothing for me. Therefore I also don’t like the most of the current “new” monitors - most of them have these resolution. If you want to use the monitor for work too, the 1440 in height is a very limiting resolution, compared with the 3840 width. Also the difference / beneffit to a normal 1440p monitor is then again much less and for me not worth to spend the additional money compared to a “good” 1440p monitor.

I wrote college papers while multitasking and played flight sims on a 640x200 (640x400 if you could stand interlace) Amiga. You dang kids are spoiled.

1440 is plenty for work unless you’re editing 4K video at 1:1 .

I hope that was meant in a funny way, because “kids” is a good joke  .. otherwise I not understand why you go personal when I try to give the OP a hint, that this is may be not the best resolution for him. He can decide by itself.. I not wrote that you can not do all things with that resolution too, only that it is not the optimal resolution “for me” and OP should may be aware of that. ( and I use these monitor for work, the whole day )

I have a Dell P3221D which is a decent quality 1440 monitor ($469 at Amazon). I’ve had it for over a year and I’m really happy with it.

The gauges in the cockpit look great and so do outside visuals.

I fly on Ultra setting with an I9-11900 and 4080 Ti and it runs great.

I have seem some much cheaper 4K 32 inch monitor, but wonder how they would compare to the more expensive Dell.

When I got this monitor, I was also building a whole new PC and thought about getting a 4K monitor, having spent so much money I skimped and only went 1440 on the 32 inch monitor.

But, I do not regret going 1440. Maybe for my next upgrade I will go 4K, but also go with a larger monitor. About a 38 inch. I have a three monitor setup in my office and not sure that I can go much bigger than 38 inch. My 32 inch monitor is flanked by two 27 inch monitors.

I would say to try the 32 and see if you like it. If you don’t return it and go for the 4K. But, like I said my 1440 32 inch looks great.

Have had 3 4k monitors for over 4 years and never want to return back. A 3080 is more than fine to run on 4k ultra resolution (cpu limited by 30fps). My old 1080ti managed that already.
