2024 ActiveSky Weather Program Main Thread

To make it more accurate in realtime live mode. File the flightplan. Set transition rate to 5

I picked up a copy a couple of days ago and getting familiar with it.

No problems installing or using it thus far, although as half-expected it isn’t compatible with //42 Flow app (so back to using the standard MSFS toolbar…which turned out to be less of an annoyance than I thought it might). [EDIT: my Flow was out of date. now works fine]

I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve been able to test comprehensively, but I think comparisons with Rex Weatherforce are not fair - AS has much much more functionality.

So far I’ve used it for IFR flights in the UK using the ATR-72 with AS in live weather mode (so injecting via control of MSFS weather presets). It certainly offers a more varied cloudscape than MSFS Live weather which is too often just some random cumulous when the weather is something between blue skies and frontal nimbostratus (ie - most of the time in temperate latitudes). AS Transitions were noticeable, but not abrupt. But the weather is relatively settled in the UK at the moment, so I’ll need to go fly somewhere with more storms.

I’ve not had an issue with Flow when using ASFS. What are you seeing?

Edit - just checked the ASFS forum. There is an incompatibility with older versions of Flow, but not with latest version.

i know ASFS seems to have opinion split - but I do prefer how it depicts the cloud formations. I rarely if ever see those cirrocumulus (or whatever the ones at the top are called that are thin and sparse) in MSFS.
But each to their own.

The downside is that occasionally it does load new data and the weather changes (even if it is gradual)

Thanks for that - I’ve not had a notification to update Flow, but will go check.

One odd thing I’ve noticed is that is sets the time in the sim (or at least in the ATR) back by 23 minutes. Odd!

That was always the case in the P3D version - IIRC, it paid more attention to interpolation and transition along the route.

I gave it a try and I liked what I saw.
But the base of the clouds is too flat.
I flew under a Cb and the lightnings were nice but there were no turbulence !
OK, I’ve never flown under a Cb IRL but I expect to be a bit shaken.
Also I saw lightnings in low small cumulus and in haze…

So, the jury is still out for ASFS…

There is a post on HiFi’s forums about users not experiencing turbulence and it being related to their AntiVirus blocking components from being injected.

New Beta is out;

Update 042324 - B8879

  • Redesigned toolbar UI interface for Parallel 42’s toolbar interop solution, establishing compatibility with most other toolbar-based mods/addons – NOTE: All developers of toolbar mods/addons are recommended to use the open-source toolbar interop by //42 to maintain compatible with all other toolbar mods/addons - please contact //42 directly for integration assistance (www.parallel42.com)
  • Added new option: Enable temperature-based altimeter errors (was previously not settable and forced on) - now defaulted off
  • Slowed general cloud transitions, especially during low/high coverage stages, approximately 50%. Now takes approximately 8 minutes to smooth from clear to overcast or vice versa, at default 50% slider setting.
  • Adjusted AS_FSConnectorInstall to account for potential dual-sim (Steam + Store) MSFS installations, either previously installed this way or currently, which could cause improper connector installation target path and lack of any wx depiction
  • Adjusted ActiveSkyUtils exe.xml install process to also account for potential dual-sim installations and handle accordingly and result in failure of simulator to connect
  • Increased speed of ā€œbuildingā€ cloud layers vs. ā€œdissipatingā€ cloud layers (by 25%) in smoothing to reduce occurrence of unexpectedly clearer skies during some transitions
  • Slightly increased cirrus generation occurrence rate in some cases
  • Increased thickness of cirrus clouds at 35K and higher altitudes to prevent MSFS cloud depiction from hiding the layer in some cases
  • Increased average thickness of stratus clouds and cumulus clouds approximately 15% per feedback, for more visual depth
  • Increased average thickness of precipitating clouds approximately 20%
  • Changed ā€œCopying theme file to simā€ message send at completion of wx theme generation to ā€œweather theme generation completeā€ message to avoid confusion and bug reports due to this normal process
  • Adjusted temp-based altimeter/baro error feature to only activate when both surface and current ISA temps are in excess of 10 deg, and below 10K AGL
  • Reverted earlier humidity/vis change as requested for slightly less humidity (more visibility) in most cases
  • Fixed issue with excessive wake turbulence effect
  • Fixed issue where download time sync could be lost in longer flights or when switching modes often, or some other undetermined cases, causing historical mode to activate and download 1-hour old wx vs. live as requested
  • Attempted fix for potential temperature discrepancy at higher altitudes
  • Updated readme/docs including adding/updating sections regarding not changing MSFS wx mode inside MSFS as this causes failure of ASFS to properly depict weather
  • Removed obsolete documentation regarding maximum cloud layer setting

I was unsure to buy this product, especially after following this topic, but it looks like team is working really hard based on the feedbacks they received etc. So I’ll give it a chance and see the results by myself.

I was about to complain about clouds appearing almost as flat as pancakes using ASFS before the new beta came out.

The first results with the new beta look very promising. It seems like the clouds are much taller now.

I went to the downloads section and the Beta isn’t there. Did you get a copy?

It’s here: NOTAM - B8883 Posted Officially | HiFi Simulation Technologies Forums

Yes I think this is very true and I really wish the team the best. They seem very keen to make this addon the best it can be.

I am yet to be convinced by the product though. At the moment it seems a tough sell. Hopefully after a few more updates I will be more convinced and make a purchase. I will then be more than happy to support them.

Thanks!

I haven’t given it a try yet, let me know your thoughts!

It requires a full reinstall. I’ll wait until they come out of Early Access. :+1: :grinning:

The winds are also a huge issue. Can cause you to lose or gain far too much IAS resulting in ridiculous climb rates for example. I once saw a 40kt wind during climb just rotating 1 degree at a time from tail wind to head wind. This obviously made me keep gaining airspeed so the climb was just increasing and increasing. Ended up doing like 10,000 fpm climb in an a320….

It’s only $24 and overall pretty good and only getting better as they’re working hard to update very frequently per feedback

A 40 knot wind in climb would be nothing unusual. Right now at my home airport in New York, the surface (METAR) wind is 200 degrees at 11 knots. At 6000 feet the wind is 245 degrees at 42 knots.

I believe Active Sky tries to introduce a ā€œslowingā€ factor in terms of directional change (degrees per second) so that the sim aircraft is not hit by a sudden wind shear if the direction changes substantially in climb or descent.
