2024 Add steering assistance for caster wheel aircraft

I initially posted this as a user help topic here: 2024 DA40 no steering and difficult walk-around

Sounds like this isn’t a user error issue, but a control change problem. I understand that planes with caster wheels have to use toe brakes to steer IRL, but this is not convenient in the sim when using an XBOX style controller. We need an assistance option to help us steer during taxi. As is, I can not get the DA42 to turn AT ALL without toe brakes, when that use to be possible in 2020. I suspect this is now true on other caster wheeled aircraft.

The cynic in me thinks that if I’m required to use toe brakes in stock aircraft, then MS better start shipping rudder pedals with toe brakes to all users. Setting up an Xbox controller binding for them is not intuitive, and has not been user friendly due to interference with other bindings.

I’m agreeing to this from the opposite side of things. It is infuriating how few planes were given caster steer. Differential brakes are made entirely useless on Asobo’s planes and most others, even the new C185F. Most taildraggers and light aircraft, even older jets, used differential brakes and caster steering. I would even accept the rudder forcing the steering by default if the casters were allowed to caster without rudder input, but again it really SHOULD be an assistance option or an extra binding. If you did fix the planes and added the assistance option, I would suggest a filter so the diff brakes don’t operate above a certain throttle percentage so that they aren’t operated on takeoff.
