2024 Controls Interface Discussion

I agree. That’s why I started my contribution to the thread with this.

I think I started a thread on this subject somewhere, but this one is more active, so here we go…

First, the MSFS 2024 > Settings > Controls > detail page for any binding is dedicated to the specific inputs for any one control. Yet, the NAME of that control is given about 10% width of the screen in a column on the left, and then truncated so you can’t even see it when trying to remember what control you are looking at. It should extend across the width of the screen, as many control names are quite long.

Next, I set out to make a comprehensive list of all the available bindings (no filters) in order to understand the default bindings, compare them to 2020, I am finding MANY duplicates and mistakes in the available binding list itself. I hope these names are just for the user, and that there are UUIDs behind them. Even so, if the code is like this list…

Example: tell me the difference between:

Flight Control Surfaces > Control Trimming Surfaces >

  • SET RUDDER TRIM
  • RUDDER TRIM SET

And I’m still counting duplicates, eg, Radio > Nav >

  • SET NAV3 VOLUME - shown twice
  • SET NAV4 VOLUME - shown twice
  • INCREASE NAV3 (WHOLE) - twice, one is meant to be “DECREASE”?
  • INCREASE NAV4 (WHOLE) - twice, one is meant to be “DECREASE”?

I will publish the list, which is all bindings that appear in the UI, with defaults for Xbox controller, Keyboard and Mouse (as they appear on my Xbox X). I hope to compare them to 2020 but only if I have the time.

Ever feel like you’ve peeled back the curtain on some seriously dysfunctional development process?

I certainly do.

I wish I could unsee it.

Now, every time I click Apply To All or try to Delete a named profile (that is not even being used / assigned to any aircraft) I get a CTD.

Would be nice to at least have a popup “cannot apply to all” or “cannot delete” rather than a straight crash….

You are not alone. Sometimes, they just disappear!

The part of the process where people actually try to use what has been developed?

Those of us who have reported this in the appropriate bug report have found the only current workaround is a complete deletion of the user cloud save.

It blows, but it fixed it for me.

That’s one more notch on the pillar of pushing me to finally invest in Spad then. They are adding up!

Has anyone figured out how to set up the cockpit quick-view left/right to toggle vice hold, like the way it worked in 2020?

Yes, it’s it the camera settings page. Not the control settings.

After many troubles just getting this sim working I finally had some time over the Christmas holidays to try out some flying.
Took me hours of fiddling to get my controls setup to something usable and finally I was able to do a few flights. (still takes me about 40 minutes of validating packages before I can get in though :rage:)

Today I thought I’d try the career mode that started me off doing a basic flight In the Cessna Skyhawk. Sadly it now seems to have reverted all my controllers back to where they were. My throttle is now reversed and also adjusts the rudder. Basically all my hours of setting up the controllers has been wasted and I’ll have to do it again, but quite frankly I’ve lost interest now, especially as I’m not confident it won’t happen again.
Is there any way of saving the controller setups to a file on my PC that I can reload if it screws up again?
I can’t wait 40 minutes to get into main menu and then spend hours resetting all my controllers each time I want to fly. Is this a known bug?

Is there a bug report for this one? I can’t find one, and I really hate that I can’t set up controls on my 4K monitor PC.

@NixonRedgrave?

I searched for “4K Settings Controls” and this is the closest thread I can find on the subject. The first 100 threads it popped up weren’t even close to any of the words I searched on.

It’s so stupid that with a monitor of this much real estate, they have to make the text 3/8" tall on my 55" 4K TV screen, and fill the rest of the screen with nothing… Guys (Developers), there’s no reason for this. I don’t even need reading glasses, I can read text a quarter of the size of the smallest text on the screen in this UI. Please bring back my ability to control text size in the UI. Who Ok’d this design??? Didn’t anyone use it at 4K who was designing the UI? What were they using for development and testing? A 15" screen or something? Maybe a 12" screen?

Edit: After all that, I found the bug report, and then I accidentally figured out how to figure out which button goes to which. For my Logitech Ex3DP at least (I didn’t notice it for my CHP Throttle Quadrant), on the left it had a list of all the buttons I could turn on and off for the command in question in the settings icon for the command. Talk about circuitous. Be that as it may, given they have this, I don’t know that they’ll fix the endemic problem as it’ll probably cause a massive rewrite of the UI.

Not a bug report, but I did try to dedicate a discussion - having missed this thread. That thread could be merged with this

Moderator Edit:
The topic has been merged as requested - I’ve not merged them chronologically into this topic as it would break the flow of responses, so all 15 posts are in their original order, below:

We really need to talk about the new UI of the Settings > Controls pages.

I find the functionality is defeated because it is squeezed in to try to fit the design:

  • the list page obscures the input names to the point where you have to click on the gear just to view the inputs. This is hard if you are trying to read through a list of settings.
  • the detail page of individual bindings obscures the name of the input and omits the categories, making it hard to know where you are.

I do not think it would be a lot of work to fix. I’m not a designer, but a few simple changes would make all the difference in usability (at least for me).

  1. The LIST page sacrifices readability for 'design"
  • The Inputs column is too narrow, many inputs are obscured
  • The white “Conflicts” number badge overlaps and further obscures
  • Give the list the full width to the right, by…
  • Compacting the upper 3rd which is a lot of free space
  • Move the list up, making a bit more room below…
  • Rework the Description text below the list.

  1. The DETAIL page for any Control Binding Input
  • The NAME of the control is obscured!
  • Many names are long, so give it full width
  • The "General / Airplane " and “Digital / Analog” labels are missing
  • The binding’s categories are missing
  • When you scroll the list of inputs, the name and current inputs scroll out of view, making it harder to remember what you are doing.

Before:

Suggestion of simple changes:

It would be helpful if the Description showed the Default setting for each binding, so that if you accidentally screw one up, it’s easier to reset it.

Finally - and perhaps MOST important:

  • Create dedicated “SAVE”, “CANCEL” buttons
  • Separate from “GO BACK”

FYI, there are many wishlist items about the controls UI, for example:
Search results for ‘controls #official:wishlist in:title tags:msfs-2024+controls’ - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Yes, but none that are specifc to the 2 UI pages where you are supposed to try to manage the controller settings.

This is very specific, and is also a significant pain point in trying to understand and manage settings.

The UI design of these 2 pages breaks UI principals and in my opinion, breaks functionality. I’ve pointed them out with screen shots, and offered a simple proposal to fix them.

Thanks.

Hi @GimbalAxis,
My post just referenced Wishlist items about the control UI that might be of interest to users of this forum. I was not suggesting any were related to your OP.

Good detailed work here. Sometimes things have to be obscured, but in that case we need to be able to hover over any field and have the full text displayed.
The layout needs work, for sure.

OK thank you.

Can you tell me if the Community Managers will group reports and discussions together (such as for “UI”) and present them to Asobo?

If not, then it feels like wasted effort on our part (meaning the effort users take to document and articulate issues and suggested fixes), and on the part of CMs like yourself…

If there is no such organizing and reporting to Asobo, please forward a request to the CMs and Jorg to make better use of the information and efforts we make. We just want things to work better, and currently things are in a pretty rough state.

Thanks.

Hi @GimbalAxis,

FYI, I’m not a CM (Community Manager) - I’m just a regular forum user that volunteers an hour or so a day to moderate the forum. I am not employed by Microsoft or Asobo.

I do know that CMs provide feedback to the Microsoft / Asobo team on what is being posted in these forums. However, I cannot say if they will mention this particular topic, as (as I’m a volunteer) I’m not privy to such communications.

I’d suggest creating a Wishlist from your OP, so others can contribute & vote as appropriate. Wishlist items have a greater chance of being acted upon than specific requests made in the General Discussion forum, as the latter tend to get diluted in the mass of other posts & topics that are continually being added.
(The same can be said of topics in the Bug Reporting Hub and posts made in the official polls created in the Polls & Feedback category too - they a have greater chance of being seen by folks at Microsoft / Asobo)
