Like many others, over the past week I’ve been playing with different settings to improve my experience with 2024. I’m still not totally sold on it and still stand behind 2020. However, I had a good friend of mine who was comparing his experience in 2024 with mine and one big difference is that he kept telling me he had felt like it was butter smooth compared to mine which seemed to have micro-stutters and just didn’t feel “smooth”.
We both have nearly identical setups with a 4090, 13900k, and 64GB RAM. I even copied his settings into my sim and one thing I quickly noticed when watching his stream was that his dev FPS counter was showing green and mine was red. After looking at his settings a bit more, I discovered he had his monitor refresh rate set to 50% and mine was locked at 100%.
I initially couldn’t figure out why I was unable to adjust the refresh rate and after turning off frame generation, I could make the adjustment. I changed it to 50% and then turned frame generation back on. Almost immediately I noticed my sim felt considerably smoother which was most noticeable during the transition of views. I changed it back to 100% and found it went back to red. I also changed it to 33% and found it went to red then as well.
I made a video showing these changes and I’m not saying it’s a magical solution for performance problems, but for me anyways and a few others on AVSIM, we saw considerable improvement. It’s such an easy thing to adjust that it really doesn’t make much sense not to try it.
Lastly, I have an LG C2 42" as my primary monitor and I stopped using GSYNC with 2020 and have yet to test it with 2024. Maybe someone else would want to try it on their end. Some others claimed that by changing the monitor refresh rate in the sim, you were reducing your fps by half; however, that just isn’t the case. My external counter was matching the performance of 100+ fps as seen in the sim (Top left of my video below). I’ve attached a brief video quickly showing this and I’d be curious to see if other folks are able to see similar improvements.
**** This is NOT some magic pill that’ll improve your fps from 40 to 100. For me, this was just about improving how smooth the sim felt when moving around and stopping the micro-stutters. To be perfectly honest, I could care less about the fps.
