2024 VR performance, 4090 vs 5090 performance (issues) and 2020 vs 2024, big decrease?

Can anyone confirm with 2024 and DFR turned on in sim (and in my case also FFR set to on in openxr toolkit), with the OG Crystal, your fps in VR near NYC, TLDR, roughly 31-33 fps in vr on runway 31R in the c172 default, with clear skies KJFK without addons (36 if set to dynamic); Also, Oxrtoolkit, cpu avg 20-30ms and gpu app is always 0.0 (not sure if the latter is normal, gpu ram at 57% which is ok) (in 2020 same situation, im getting 55-60 fps in vr)

*edit: this is now on beta su3 1.5.1.0 was the same with su2 final

**For instance, KFJK runway 31R clear skies (no addons, bare bones and community empty) is about 28-38 looking around in the cessna 172 default (avg of say 30 fps), this with DLSS performance and no smart smoothing. In 2D its 64 fps.

I feel like this value is really low, in 2020 i swear i was getting near steady 45.

(If i enable the nyc times addon, it decreases by about 3 fps in vr, about 10 fps less at kjfk in 2d.)

Same deal above NYC, im getting about 38-44 with an avg of 41-42 with defaults + dlss + dfr
My pimax client is set to 1.0 for the render resolution as i’ve always had it.

I’m on a 14900k (minor undervolt) +64gb ddr4 6400 + 4090 OC Gigabyte at the moment (this same area spikes my cpu to 99C during loading of KJFK), also, im using the pimax 1.14 client due to good smart smoothing ability but these results here are without smart smoothing, not using a decreased resolution override in the toolkit, in sim settings are like TLOD 130/ Buildings 150, clouds at high, most other settings on medium except texture resolution, set to high / ultra there. Headset set to 90hz.

Nvidia app set to “latest” for dlss and im using the next to last driver (there is a newer one dated may 12th though), optimization for games is set to off.

Looking for an apples to apples compare here to know if something is amiss, the 99C temp spike is something new though, used to never exceed 90.

i have a 5090 OC coming on monday, i may either start a new thread or do comparibles here in this thread once i get it going, also waiting on a june arrival of the pimax super

DLSS v4 with perf or balanced all the same.

UPDATE: after using DDU uninstaller, wiping out some local \msfs profile folders etc, i now get 10-12 fps better in VR and about 8 in 2D (frame gen off)

VR performance sucks once again. Been getting notification GPU memory can’t handle it.. WT?! Prior to SU2, had no issues with settings on Ultra. Now at Medium settings, getting memory issues…on a…RTX4070ti i91300 128GB ram…supposedly!!! And today, reloaded this app 3 times, still messed up
!!!

i decided to try the same scenario of kjfk apples to apples as much as possible, in 2020.. im getting 55-60 fps with the OG Crystal + toolkit ffr on quality there (vs about 32 with dfr in msfs 2024), something is really amiss here.. and setting 2024 to low end only gains about 10 fps, go from 30 fps to 40.

Another comparable in the c172, around eglcc im at about 48-50 fps (again native res OG crystal)
, which is actually higher than another random barren location i tried (KAGC at about 46 fps near pgh, pa), so maybe its a kjfk issue even at defaults/premium kjfk

Back to KJFK, if i disable the premium addon, vr becomes more like 37. Switching to inibuilds kjfk, its about the same… fly away towards and over the city the range is 39-48 fps, avg about 40-42 close to buildings.

Also get near other airports theres a sharp drop off in fps.. i think a known issue, but kjfk hits harder.

Here is another comparable:

EGLC full install (orbx south, eglc etc) 2024: 2D at 4k: 60fps, VR 41
EGLC bare bones 2024: 2D 63 FPS, VR 48 peak

EGLC Bare bones 2020: 2D 84 fps, VR 74-77 fps (DLSS performance, 145 tlod, 155 buildings, 16x/2x, 1024/512 shadows, ambient low etc)

So basically eglc bare bones is 30 fps better in VR in 2020 vs 2024, either something is really amiss with my 2024 install or the drop is that high?

UPDATE: put in the 5090 oc windforce and there was ZERO change either in msfs 2020 or 2024, im completely baffled, it should be about 17 fps better in vr at least according to one review comparison unless it was flawed
. EDIT: 3dmark nomad seems good, 13999 at stock, so its not an issue with the card i guess.

UPDATE2: i used a test win clean partition and retried, i actually see an uplift of about 8 fps at eglc to 68-70 in 2D and an uplift of 10 fps from 48 to 58. **has 10 fps been the avg for those switching from 4090 to 5090 (og crystal at native res)?

I believe 10 fps is about right, 20+% increase

If you don’t see much improvement when you change GPUs, it might be that you are CPU limited

We have an ASUS TUF 5090 card in one of our rigs, … in MSFS 2024 we are only about 21% better than the 4090. In DCS World, we are at about 24% better with DLSS and about 21% better than the 4090 with DLAA. For a card that costs ~ $3100 to $4000 currently and consumes 33% more electricity, the return imho is pretty poor. I actually think that the 4090 is still the high-end sweet spot.

I am getting dxgi_error_device_hung when loading a free flight in FS20 worse than never, testing a new stock Nvidia 5090, FS24 the same but at least I can fly a bit of minutes more, aaaaaaaand I can´t go to previous more stable drivers like before with the 4090 that had CTD, but much more less because the 5000 has black screens a I don´t remember what more if not recent drivers. What an enormous pile of p00, I don´t know sure the culprit or culprits.

And yes, from 4090 to a 5090, I am thinking that what you can do is raise the clouds from high to ultra e.g., and that is the difference, a bit expensive the notch up.

Hope they can improve drivers and simulators…

And youtubers reporting 30 of increase and 40% with DLSS4… OMG, hope that can change optimising drivers and MSFSs for the 5000.

So my results at least in vr are about 20%, i think im right where it should be. In 2D it was a bit less of a jump. (frame gen off in 2d)

As far as the power consumption, i was going to try undervolting, which should yield around 450-475 without much drop in performance, at or around i think 0.9 or so, not sure which frequency yet, havent played with this in afterburner thus far

Updated main post on this
“UPDATE: after using DDU uninstaller, wiping out some local \msfs profile folders etc, i now get 10-12 fps better in VR and about 8 in 2D (frame gen off)”

Of course in MSFS 2020 the fps is still 20+ fps better in vr, sad reality

The solution was yes, reverting to 572.83 have solved it like before with the 4090 and now with the 5090, to the previous more stable in FS24 and FS20, though I don´t recommend it for the black screens maybe, I have a copy to restore and the iGPU, and start the SO with the iGPU, change the NVIDIA driver, hope all go well.

Strange, i made no changes to my system, except im on the latest su3 beta, all the performance increases i saw with the 5090 vs 4090 have been chopped to nearly none.

At EGLC bare install, i was seeing 58 in VR on the 5090 (after doing a DDU clean up), now im seeing 50 at best, usually 48 sitting on the runway, nearly 10 fps lost, (48 was the 4090’s value too).

UPDATE: so foveated rendering setting in msfs is dropping my frame rate by 15 fps! with the su3 beta still.. unreal.. i also found that having ai offline traffic set vs off, lose about 4 fps.. i can now hit 58-60 fps easy on the runway at EGLC bare install, DLSS v4 balanced, clear skies, default 172 cessna.

Those both settings are more CPU bounded, to avoid more possible 14900 thermal throttling, I would test also with all the e-cores disabled, even the hyperthreading.

update, i was on su3, i removed myself from the beta, then readded/reinstalled su3beta, bare tests below:

EGLC with su3 reinstalled, foveated rendering ON 50 fps, Fov off, 66 fps (gained 13 somehow)
KPIT with su3 reinstalled, foveated off, 70 fps (gained 16 here as well) :open_mouth:

Foveated still causes rdrthread to go red in fps viewer and lose fps, but without it, performance is pretty good now

that foveated render in sim is garbage, drops frames like crazy and just looks bad mess.. i just use ffv from Pimax Play, and have this junk in MSFS 2024 OFF

looking at your review i think i am going to hold off on 5090, (4090 currently) not really sure if it is worth to me spend almost $4000 CAD for 20% gain.. maybe if i had a guarantee buyer for my 4090 then yes and i would want 2000$ for it, but otherwise.. meh…

Yeah i guess it depends on what the cost to get to a 5090 is. For me, selling the 4090, the net cost in the USA ended up only being about $600, so to gain 20% or even 13 fps in most scenarios in VR was a huge boost, especially will be once my Pimax Super gets here. And now in nearly every scenario, i can be at 45 fps with smart smoothing on (but still only client 1.14 for that)

yeah i ended up being able to sell my 4090 for $2300 which is actually more then i paid for it ..

to be perfectly honest i have to mention the taxes… so in fact i paid $2550 including taxes for 4090 in oct '22, sold it now $2300, bought 5090 for $4200 including taxes.. that was the least expensive available in Best Buy (not scalper) so difference of $1900.. not cheap but beats paying $4200 for 5090 and keeping 4090 till it is worthless, so i am glad someone bough it and i used the founds for 5090

Lets now hope it serves me as well as the 4090 did the past 2 +years

all in Canadian $

I think one of the best webpages to watch prices for 50xx is the Nvidia official, and then go to that external shops in your world region.
