2k on a 4k screen? Performance question

Hey there guys after some advise, i currently game at 4k pretty much locked to 30 fps.

Considering running at 2k resolution instead, but not sure if i should do it, the monitor is 49" gaming monitor. My setup is a prettt beefy setup and thought performance would be better then i am achieving at present. So the other part of the question is, do i render at 2K in the sim settings or nvidea control panel?

System settings for what its worth

Ryzen 7950X
Rtx 4090
64gb ddr5 at 5600mhz.

Just want to increase performance a bit, i see much lesser systems pushing better performance but at same time i dont want to give up too much quality, my ingame settings are all AI disabled, and for the GFX panel slightly above the Ultra preset.

Any tips / advise be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

I would set the monitor to its native 4K resolution, and run the sim in 2K.

Do you think that will bring improvements in performance

It should. You’ll be pushing less than half the pixels around in 2K vs. 4K.
Obviously it won’t help you with CPU limited processing tasks. But your 7950X is a pretty stout CPU.
If you keep your GPU limited graphics settings the same you should see an overall boost.

I aso suggest keeping the monitor native but (assuming 16:9) in NVCP you can create a 2880x1620 custom desktop which even after you return to a 4k desktop will show as selectable in MSFS. As this resolution is exactly 3/4 of 3840x2160 not only is it a higher res than 2k it will also be less prone to blurring (I use this resolution myself and could not be happier).
However I only have an rtx3060 and a 5800X, you may find your 4090 too overpowering for the cpu at that res so 4k DLSS+DAA might be a better solution. Remove all frame caps whenever testing.

Very interesting. Thanks.

As in you lock it at 30 FPS or the game is capping at 30 FPS, even with vsync off?

Fully depends on your CPU. Could be that you’re already CPU bound.
If you want more performance, I suggest playing with render scaling to 50% or using DLSS. No monitor-resolution-trickery needed at all. It will just mess up your desktop and windows.
