3080 10gb Upgrade options

Hi all,

I’m currently upgrading my pc from i7-11700kf and 3080 10gb. I got a second hand 7800x3d and ddr5 16*2 ram in a good price, now just need to decide the new graphics card since the 3080 is too hot and power inefficient.

My choices: 9070, 9070xt, 5070, (second hand) 7900xt

My addons: Fenix320, ini350(super lagging on my current pc, just want to make it work after upgrate), payware scenery and airports, vPilot or Fstraffic. Navigraph and browser at backend.

My expectation: 1440p on 3440x1440 with high-ultra effects, TAA or DLAA with frame generation. Raw fps at least 30fps.

These cards are in the price that I can afford, wanna wait till black friday to get one of these. To me, nvidia card are more stable and I would like to have them but just their price are too high. 5070ti should be the ultimate solution, but 850$ I can’t really afford it. I just wonder if 5070 can reach my expectation, and how stable are AMD video cards since I never used AMD cards before.

Please leave any suggestions here and appreciate your comments!

PS: frame rate when in ini350 at klax

I have an RX7900 XTX .

I would try to get 16GB of VRAM, 9070XT.

Do you think its the performance matters more or VRAM size?

@CreasingTooth73
Back in the day, I would have told you, “Avoid AMD - NVIDIA’s the way to go” because their drivers were just so much more stable. These days, though, NVIDIA’s new drivers can be just as buggy as AMD’s used to be.

I still go with NVIDIA myself, but that doesn’t mean you have to.

One thing that does matter now is VRAM, especially for MSFS 2024. To play smoothly, you really want a card with 16GB VRAM or more. So, the RTX 5070 is out. If you’re going NVIDIA, start from the RTX 5070TI. Same goes for AMD - aim for 16GB VRAM or higher.

Congrats on your 5070Ti. I am having good success with mine. Once you get set-up and flying for a while LMK if interested and I will share the settings that work for me on my PC (specs in my profile). Cheers!

Thanks! Still waiting for the new motherboard but im so excited LOL… Just wondering on your expeirence if I’m at big payware airports like JFK or LAX and flying ini350 or fenix320 (probably with vatsim) would it be more CPU limit or GPU limit?

Congrats on the great deal. I’m hope it will serve you well and you will be happy with the performance.

You might also want to think about upgrading your PSU.

RTX 5070 Ti uses the new power connector, so I’d recommend getting a newer PSU that supports it natively - for example, something like the MSI MPG A1000GS PCIe 5.

A power supply with a dedicated GPU power cable is always better (and safer) than using adapters.

It really depends on things like your resolution and graphics settings, but in most cases - especially at heavy airports like JFK or LAX with complex aircraft and VATSIM - you’ll be CPU limited. That’s how it is for most of us.

I got a 850w PSU. I’ll see if it can handel the 5070ti, hopefully. Next step probably I’ll upgrade CPU again, the upgrading seems like an endless cycle LOL…

First of all, that 850W PSU is just barely enough for an RTX 5070 Ti - it’s really on the edge in terms of power requirements. Secondly, it’s probably an older unit, which means it might not be fully compatible with newer GPUs, especially if it doesn’t have the proper dedicated power cable for GPU. Your next step should be upgrading PSU, not the CPU. A solid PSU is the foundation of any stable system.

I’m very happy with my 5070ti, having also come from a 3080 10GB. The combination of extra VRAM and 2 newer GPU generations made a bigger difference than I expected. I’m running 5120x1440 and with the help of frame gen am getting good frame rates.

Regarding power, I’m running a 750W PSU which is the recommended minimum for the 5070ti; I’ve had no issues whatsoever in the several months since I’ve been using the new graphic card. I was unsure if it would be adequate but figured I’d see how I got on, rather than splasing out on a new PSU if it wasn’t needed. Probably helps that I’m not running a power-hungry CPU.
