I’m really trying to smooth out my MSFS experience. I’m currently rocking:
i7 13700k
3080 Aorus 10GB
64GB DDR5
all Sim stuff is on NVME drives.
and while I’m not having a terrible experience I do find I’m slogging the Sim down to 20fps sometimes.
I fly mainly the Fenix320 and PMDG737 and 777 when that ever releases.
I toyed with the idea of a 4090 but I think at 1440p I’m just wasting money on it so started to look at the 4080S but I worry it’s just not that much of an upgrade nor will it provide any better of an experience. But I also think the increased vram will really help.
Has anyone made this jump with similar specs? I know there is never a good time to buy with the 5000 series coming within the next year (Probably) so I’m not sure if I slog it out and wait.
I have the 3080Ti with the i7 11gen, and I run the sim perfectly smooth in my Pimax Crystal. I’m sure I can get another year out of this card. And, 2024 promises to be more performant, so perhaps you won’t want a new card so much. I would hold off till 2024 releases.
I recently picked up a 4080 super @MSRP and the sim is running much better. Much smoother all across the board and this goes for every sim I own including DCS World, X-PLANE 12 and yes the extra VRAM helps!
If you have the resources go for it. Unless you want to wait a year for the lower tier next gen cards.
I wouldn’t do it, and would wait for the next gen of GPUs, which should be out along this year. I’m running a 6800XT and I have had hiccups or frame drops only in situations where that’s expected, as in landing at KLAX, Heathrow or JFK with Fenix or PMDG and FSLTL or real life online traffic. IMHO it’s not worth the expense to jump to current gen when next gen is not that far away and it’s expected to have real improvements and not just “more watts more ghz more ram more fps”.
I am not sure that your specs look like a problem. Something feels off to me. I run a 9700K and 2070S @ 1440p and I get 40 inside the cockpit and 60+ fps outside once in the air. I few things.
Do you have XMP enabled?
Do you have hyperthreading enabled?
Have you overclocked your CPU\GPU?
I have seen issues when overclocking throws things off so if you have this enabled try going back to stock speed on your CPU and GPU.
Try to disable hyperthreading on your CPU. I have read of other folks having an issue with this.
What graphics settings are you using in the sim? Did you by any change crank up your LOD?
Are you using DX11 or DX12? Complete list of graphics settings might help someone suggest some changes.
Your hardware should be plenty capable. Granted I am not flying PMDG (yet) or Fenix320. I usually fly the FBW A320. I feel like there is some setting that is causing this.
You may also want to search the forum as well. There have been plenty of posts about general performance and graphics settings. Even with powerful systems like yours, some folks have experienced issues while others with lowers settings have not.
SkyWarrior’s points above are all good - make sure your setup and in-game settings are the best you can achieve for your machine first, and remove overclocks.
Hardware wise, a change of GPU probably won’t net you much, the bottleneck in this setup will be the CPU. The choice is either to tweak and refine settings, or look to a change of CPU.
So it was / is an interesting one. With Dev Mode open I would constantly flicker between GPU & CPU bottleneck it was rarely just the one. Which in my eyes is a good thing.
My issue is more so with consistency. I could be flying into the same airport twice in one day and the performance metrics couldn’t be further from each other.
Yesterday I upgraded to a 4080Super since I was able to get it at MSRP and I must say I think it’s helped a bunch. I had the 10GB 3080 and I think the VRAM was my issue. I’m yet to put the 4080S through it’s paces but I stopped with the idea of a 4090 since I don’t plan on going 4k anytime soon. But so far I think my issue has been rectified for the most part.
This is exactly what I did yesterday, I got Same day delivery on a 4080 Super and I’ve instantly noticed the smoothness.
I’m yet to really hit it hard but I tested it with the Fenix 320 CFMs and FSTL at Origami Gatwick last night and I could instantly tell of better performance.
I’m not sure if I’m doing something Wrong but Frame Generation looks terrible for me so I’ve left that off and getting a rather stable 40FPS under that load.
If you’re toying with the idea of getting a 4080 Super, check out the 4070 Ti Super first. I just got a new build with the latter, which is quite a bit cheaper, and very similar in terms of performance. Better in some regards, weaker in others.
The 4070ti S and 4080S are not even in the same ballpark in terms of performance . Probably close in MSFS being cpu limited. It’s on average 20fps ahead depending on the game.
