Hi there,
I am going to buy a HP reverb G2 but I first need to upgrade my GPU (I currently have a RTX 2060 with a Ryzen 7 3700X). My local shop has a 3080 (10 GB VRAM) or a more recent 4070 Ti (12 GB VRAM) about 10% more expensive. I have been reading quite a bit on this forum and elsewhere and it appears that although the 4070 Ti is faster than the 3080 and has more memory, its bandwidth is signifiantly lower than the 3080. So my question to all the VR specialists out there: has anybody tried both cards with a reverb G2 (or a similar headset) and compared the framerate?
It would be a shame to buy the more expensive 4070Ti and get a lower framerate. I was also wondering if I will be CPU or GPU limited with my Ryzen 7 3700X (in which I might get similar results with both GPUs !).
Thanks for your advice
Just to nip this one in the bud as I have heard it quite a few times (sometimes from Youtube “experts”).
You simply cannot make the numbers comparison across different architectures - it doesn’t work.
If you can get a 4070ti for only 10% more then IMO opinion it’s a no brainer.
Faster (check comparisons online)
More Memory
More Power Efficient
DLSS 3 (Which makes a huge difference in the sim)
Edit: Just noticed you want it for VR. Mmm - pretty sure DLSS (FG) doesnt work with VR
Not sure it is something that is possible in the future. It’s not something I’ve ever used
Thanks for the information, but I am indeed focusing solely on VR with the HP reverb G2. For non-VR applications, I agree that the 4070Ti is superior. I was hoping some VR users on the forum had been able to test both GPUs with a high resolution headset to get an idea of the fps difference.
you’re paying 10% more for 30% more performance. This one is a no brainer, brother. Def go for the 4070ti. Indeed it’s less than 30% at high resolutions and VR but it’s also a new architecture and 2gb more VRAM. There is just no contest here.
Yes you’re probably right. The few benchmarks for VR I have been able to find on the net appear to place the 4070Ti above the 3080 so I believe the controversy on the limited bandwidth is not based on facts. I finally bought the 4070 Ti and I’ll give an update on how it performs once I’ve received the G2 headset.
I have a 3080, i9-12900 with G2 and performance is very smooth and sharp with 40+ fps (reduced to around 30 in just a few ultra-heavy urban areas like NYC and Toronto). Certainly not bad enough to warrant the incredible cost of a 4070 or 4080. But for 10% more, hope you grabbed the 4070ti!
I finally decided to get the 4070 Ti and I received the Reverg G2 headset a few days ago. I have done a bit of testing mainly in rural/isolated locations (bush trips in California and Patagonia using small planes). With OpenXR set at 120% and render scale at 100% (and most other settings set at “high”), I get between 30 and 35 fps during my flights. Altogether a very smooth and pleasant experience. My GPU runs at 95% - 100% (and I am always GPU-limited despite the fact that I use a slightly older Ryzen 7 3700X).
So the 4070Ti appears powerful enough to take advantage of the full resolution of the Reverb G2, at least when you are away from major cities. Hope this helps other users.
How is the VRAM usage on the 4070Ti at full res?
