Have been going back and forth in my mind on this since I built my new rig a few weeks ago;
MSI MPG X870E CARBON WIFI, AMD X870E ATX AM5
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer III 360 A-RGB Black AIO CPU Cooler
nVidia RTX 3090
G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB 64GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30
SAMSUNG 990 EVO 2TB M.2 NVMe 2.0
MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5, 80+ PLATINUM Full Modular 1300W
be quiet! SILENT BASE 802 Window BLACK
I kept the 3090 but now starting to re-think things.
What I ultimately wanted as a 4090, but it’s a dead SKU and everywhere is out of stock. I’ve been keeping an eye online for used but nothing coming up.
A 5090 is out of the question, not paying more then the above rig for a GPU
Which leaves me considering a 5080, yes it’s a cut in VRAM, but I don’t recall ever even coming close to utilizing 24GB (PC is only used for MSFS).
Given that 24GB of VRAM seems overkill based on experience, wondering if the speed / new technology benefits of the 5080 outweigh the reduction in VRAM?
Then of course there’s the rumors of a 5080ti with 24GB…
It may also be worth mentioning, my 3090 has NO bells and whistles, is not OC etc… as it’s a Dell card out of an Alienware rig.
Have been watching a bunch of YT videos to both better understand the 5070Ti just bought and see if that was the right choice at this time. What I have seen is that there are significant generational benefits from the 30xx to the 50xx, which suggests going for it, whatever it is that you can find and afford. OTOH we all know that 24 gobbles up VRAM.
Earlier today I was flying the Dreamliner in 24 and VRAM usage was like 14 of the 16 GB. Right now I’m in the PMDG 738 in 2020 and VRAM is 8.5GB. The frame rates are mad good in both sim, bumping up against the 60 FPS limit set my Q80 with HDR on and most all settings at HIGH, except for ray tracing which I have off. Of course, the frame rates will go down when challenged during different flight phases, but I’m not getting stuttering or slide shows either.
With what I am experiencing with the 5070Ti, no buyers remorse here and I’m not looking for a 5080 either. I’m rather new to current PC tech, but it seems that there are benefits to matching CPU & GPU for gaming, so why not treat yourself to a new 5 series when you can find the right one? Go for it!
Before Christmas I installed a 9800x3D and kept my 3080 10G in the system, I was happy with it but I was still not getting the frames that I was wanting to get. I was lucky enough to get a $1,249 NEWEGG Bundle for a PNY 5080 OC ($999) and a Corsair HX1000i PSU ($250). After install of both I am supper happy. I have not overclocked my 5080 yet but everything that I have read says that you can OC the â– â– â– â– out of them to the point where the FPS is only a few lower than a stock 4090. This obviously does not take into account the vram though. I am waiting for the drivers to mature before I start to OC it.
The only thing that you may want to consider is that Nvidia is going to come out with a 5080ti at some point so they can get more money, the only thing that they will be able to do is increase the ram to 24 or 32 depending on how the modules stack. Or they may just make the standard clocks on the ti what the free overclock is on the non ti and charge more money. If all holds true then it could be as early as this time next year that it will come out.
I would personally say that if you can get your hands on a MSRP model then I would do it, wait until you test it before you sell your 3090 so worst case scenario you can return it if you are not happy with the upgrade.
I am also mainly flying in 2020 until 2024 gets ironed out so the 24gb is not as important to me at the moment. I have faith that Asobo will figure out the VRAM issue and 16gb will be enough at least for the near future.
Given how in demand any 50 series is right now, chances are that if you can find one and decide you don’t like it, you can probably sell it for what you paid or perhaps more? Of course there is always the return policy. Could be worth a try just to get the new faster GDDR7 VRAM that is only available in the NVIDIA cards? If they come out with a 5080Ti, that might tempt me to sell the 5070Ti and take a step up when feasible.
I only just started looking at FPS rates today, since the new PC has been performing so well I hadn’t bothered to look. Now if they are tweaking 24 to maximize use of available GPU capacity, perhaps 14 of 16 is what good looks like? Just an idle musing. Which card does your dealer have to ship?
All I know about it would be: 1) premium brand; 2) TUF is middle of line; and 3) OC versions seem to be fetching about $200-300 over list for each particular chip. For example, a Micro Center near me now has 5080 OC for $1300 if I recall correctly.
What resolution are you using and single screen or multiple screens. 1440p shouldn’t have a vram problem but 4k does use more and the 16gb is more likely to be a problem. I am on a 5090 in triple 4k (using DLSS) and see vram usage of 16-20gb at busy airports/cities. I could lower that a bit by turning down texture resolution from high to medium. I think SU2 will bring some improvement to vram usage but on the developer live stream it sounded like a small thing and nothing major. I also don’t fly airliners that would likely use more. I think the benefits of the 5th gen GPU would be worth it and they have good resale if you found a 5080ti down the line for msrp and presuming you can get the 5080 for msrp. Could also keep a look out for the 9070xt from AMD.
Many gamers are holding onto their RTX 4090s while waiting for new deliveries of the RTX 5090, which means fewer are available for sale. Additionally, some users are choosing not to upgrade from the RTX 4090 to the RTX 5090 because the RTX 4090 is an excellent graphics card with great performance.
I am one of those who will keep RTX 4090, as replacing it with a new RTX 5090 simply doesn’t make sense financially or performance-wise.
However, if you’re patient, you might be able to find a used RTX 4090 over time.
I mentioned on a forum that Gigabyte GPUs are known for not exhibiting coil whine.
Read/saw in more than one place that the 50xx are made on the same TMC fab as the 40xx, so 40xx production stopped when 50xx started and presumably all the previous gen cards washed out of distribution while the new ones came in. When I was shopping last month not one 40xx could be found and I simply bought the first 50xx I could get my hands on that would work for me, the 5070Ti.
Everything that I have read is that it is a quality card, the only down side is the price. From what I have seen, all of the 5080’s with three fans are very similar with the exception of what the boost clock is, which in the end all of these cards can boost to these numbers or higher with simple OC’s. Supposedly the TUF line has upgraded cooling, so maybe it will be better in the long run. I was personally trying to get the Gigabyte Auras Master since it had an additional LCD display window that provided data such as GPU temp and % usage. To me that was the only card that truly offered something above the base MSRP models since I really could care less about the RGB. In the end I was able to get the PNY OC model with no RGB, so that was what I got, again it was at the MSRP $999 price so I am happy. I also did not realize it at the time but PNY is actually an American company so that may be why they have not boosted their pricing.
At this point though if you are able to get a card and that is in your budget then go for it, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
NOTE: There have been issues with the X670E and X870E MSI boards and 5080’s using PCIE 5 (It also looks like other boards also have issues but they have had BIOS updates to disable ASPM by default which seems to fix the issue), people are reporting that the PCIE is not working correctly and throttle back to 1x or 2x. I personally have a X670E MSI board and am not having any issues, I made sure to set ASPM to disabled in the BIOS prior to installing the card (This was a fix that I found on Reddit prior to receiving my card). I can use GPUz to see it properly use all lanes including 5x16 as needed. I have not tried it without this though so it could be that i am just not affected by it. It is said that PCIE 5 is very picky and there will be some growing pains as the manufacturers actually get to use it for real.
I also am using the 572.16 drivers, again others may work but I know this one works for me so I have not tried any of the others until I see that they are stable. I personally used DDU to remove my old drivers while I still had my 3080 installed. I then installed the 572.16 driver only. After I installed the 5080 and verified it was working properly I installed NVIDIA APP from the Nvidia download not through the driver.
And to top it all off, not only was it MRSP, they gave me a discount as I ordered it from the place I got all my PC components so made it a “bundle” despite it being a few weeks after.
5090 is crazy expensive so I’m trying to decide between 5070ti and 5080 with this setup. I hope to be able to use VR for helicopters and small airplanes but I also would like to be able to use 3 monitors. I don’t fly airliners and read somewhere I can turn off wildlife running around and it helps 2024 a lot. Could I use three 65" 144hz monitors with this setup?
