32GB vs 64GB RAM Experience

But the ‘ideal’ specs are supposedly what’s recommended to run at 4k.

As I’ve said previously, the whole thing is stupid.

New sim, and new hardware later this year may be when I jump into 4K with both feet. It’s good to have an idea of what that might take.

5800x3d and 7800XT were enough for me to run native 4k at good settings.

Quite right. I run a motion platform wind generators rudders, a bravo quadrant and a ffb yoke with vr through pimax crystal and I definetly see a smoother experience with 64gb so I`m sticking with it.

I receive two new memory sticks from Amazon today to up my PC to 64G, so I’ll report back if I see any noticeable improvements with FS2020. I have Spad.Next, Navigraph, BeyondATC, Edge with multiple windows, and often a Virtual Airline pilot client, so plenty of extra stuff that’s running.

As do I.

If I can get the time, I’ll report any noted difference.

Please do report. Would love to hear if I’m not just going crazy here LOL.

I’m seeing less of the loading studders and when there is one, it is markedly shorter.

Example. I handmade a version of KPRB and we have a warbirds museum here. I added the SimObject of the default DC-3 with a C-47 livery. Whenever I taxi to RWY 31 past the museum, I’d get a big studder as the highest LOD loaded of the C-47 as I got close enough to it. That still happens, but it is significantly shorter in duration.

A bit confused on this RAM issue. I intended to increase my RAM from 32 to 64 GB. I currently have two 16 GB G.Skill DDR5 6000s. Two questions: 1) I am running an i9 14900KF processor and 4090 GPU. I fly strictly VR. Do I really need 64GB for MSFS 2024? I only run Little Navmap and Spad.Next in the background, never anything else when flying. 2) Which is better . . . 4x16 or 2x32 RAM? Of course it would be cheaper for me to just add 2x16 to the present setup.

If 32GB of RAM is enough for you now it should also be sufficient for MSFS 2024. Hold off on upgrading until you can test MSFS 2024 on release day - take your time, there’s no need to rush.

I already mentioned on the forum that using four memory sticks 4x16GB will be worse than using 2x32GB.
This includes higher stress on the memory controller, reduced overclocking potential and higher latency. The performance of 4x16GB memory sticks will also be lower compared to 2x32GB.
I don’t know what motherboard you have and it’s possible that after installing additional memory sticks, their speed might decrease.

Would any speed reduction from adding 2 more 16gb sticks be at all noticeable in MSFS, either 2020 or 2024, or is the effect academic? Wouldn’t the increase in ram still be beneficial?

Sorry for going off-topic, but it would be great if you could share the changes you made to the airport!

SoftPerfect - paid version.

I started with free IMdisk, but wasn’t happy with it.

I had 4x16GB in my AM4 system, but went with 2x32GB in my new AM5.
I never had any problems with 4 DIMMS, but there are too many technical comments on the internet talking about better performance with 2 on an AMD system.

Chances are it would be unnoticeable either way. The biggest difference is the speed and stability of the actual RAM.

On FS2020 I haven’t seen any difference between 48GB and 96GB which I’m using now on this machine (it can support 12x128GB - ECC ram).

I do think the higher video memory is worth it, I’ve always used a card with 32GB VRAM and it has always been dependable in 2D mode. In VR mode less so, but that’s other causes.

Sounds like you are using a server motherboard. XEON(s) as well?

ECC (registered) RAM - as I’m sure you know - is very different than the RAM used in the vast majority of gaming systems.

I neglected to note I’m running an I5-13600k Intel cpu, and I gather 4x16 gig sticks may be less of an issue with Intel rather than AMD.

I’m using a separate computer with just MSFS on it. Have 16gb and it runs VR just fine.

So if you use a monitoring utility like HWinfo64 what is the highest level of memory used?

I’ve done zero monitoring, so I cannot say.

I have simply noticed a major reduction in, what I call, “loading stutters”. I’d see them even when approaching many of the small autogen GA airports I so frequent. There would usually be one definitely noticeable one on approach.

I did not see that yesterday, at all. Let me caveat that by saying I didn’t try flying into KLAX or anywhere in the congested S.F. Bay Area or their ilk. Nor did I fly a mega complex aircraft. I flew the CL-415 and the Condor yesterday.

I’ve been into a major house renovation since mid-July and I’ve barely had the time I usually have for the sim. I’d like to do more testing, but so far I’ve seen a noted change in these loading stutters simply from the increase in RAM.

Like @xxYUNIORxx I can’t really make sense of why this would be. In the past, when I would monitor RAM usage by the sim and various other resources I didn’t think I saw a deficit of available resources that would lead to a manifestation in issues. In all fairness, I never watched the numbers with any sort of obsessed zeal. I am just not going to be someone who will invest that level of mental energy into it. I built this PC for the sim and only the sim, so my intention is to just be flying airplanes and not obsessing on PC performance characteristics and tweaking.

I’ve been extremely pleased with how the sim has performed on this machine other than these loading stutters. They are the one thing that have been a massive annoyance.
