4070ti or 7900 XT with a Ryzen 5800X3D?

I have a Ryzen 5800X3D on the way and am trying to decide what GPU to get.
I am playing at 1440p.

My choice stands between the 4070ti and the Radeon 7900XT.

I dont have a freesync screen, so my target is FPS at best possible quality.

Do any of you have recommendations from your own experience or similar investigations? Do you maybe have links to good reviews which has a good focus on MSFS?
(I did try to look, but did not find something)

I’d recommend 7900 xt simply due to its VRAM size.
The NVIDIA 40 series are great on DLSS and RT but the Red team is catching up.
I recently returned the 4080 and kept my 3090 ti.
Then I was able to grab one 7900XTX with a great price and I just rid of my 3090 ti and I have yet looked back.

If you want to fight with drivers at every single release go with amd.
If you want to have graphic artifacts and trails with fsr on
 go with amd.
If you want to see an amd user crying call me

I have been using AMD for years and have never had driver issues with MSFS or other games for that matter  So I am looking for performance information.

Same here - AMD Adrenalin drivers have been rock solid with MSFS (and other games). I’m sure the AMD based graphics in the Xbox helps!

the 5800x3d deserves at least a 4080, this combo runs very well. With 32gb 3600 cl16, 80 fps in 4k, high settings, cloud ultra

i just got a 7900 xt but every time i load up msfs it will load to just right when it says you want to start in normal mode or safe then crashes my pc and other games work but that one will not any idea??

I’ve been using AMD GPUs with FS 2020 from the first day of its release. I started with a Sapphire RX590, then to a Sapphire RX6700TX, and now a Sapphire RX7900XT. I haven’t had any unsolvable issues with the drivers so far.

The RX7900XT has impressed the heck out of me. At the moment, I can’t think of a better GPU for the price.

Just a thought
but is your power supply big enough? I was using a 750 watt supply when I went from the RX6700XT to the RX7900XT. FS 2020 started crashing on startup but everything else ran fine. I replaced it with a 1000 watt Corsair and it’s been fine since.

yeah i am using a 750 watt power supply i have a 800 coming in a few days maybe thats what it is everything from cyber punk to steep and hogwarts legacy work fine on ultra everything it is just msfs crashing

oh 850 not 800

Interesting, you were not happy with frame generation then? For me, this is a killer feature of the RTX 4xxx cards and so far, no sign on the horizon for an AMD equivalent. FSR 3.0 was supposed to come Q1 2023, but since November no news regarding this (and it would need to be implemented into MSFS anyway first).

This frame generation thing is basically THE reason why I think about going to a 4080 instead of a 7900XTX

Ryzen 5800x3d
TUF X570
RTX 4070 ti
32GB ram @ 3200
Samsung 980 pro NVME
1440p AOC 32" monitor

I went with the 4070 ti after a swore off AMD due to driver issues a few years back, moving onto a 3070, and now the 4070ti.

After a bit of experimenting Im running the sim in DX11 with TAA, as honestly the who DX12 implementation and frame gen etc is not what its cracked up to be in my opinion. I was seeing to much stuttering for my liking - maybe not a card issue, probably a sim issue, but the implementation of DX12 is something I hope they will improve over time,

I am not running Ultra everything either, if like me you like to have FSTL / AIG and high detailed models like at inibuilds EGLL then honestly the 4070 starts to buckle a little at max settings, seems like a VRAM limitation and looking around these forums you can find all sorts of posts about cards like the 3090 / 4090 using into the high teens in VRAM.

Ive got the ‘texture’ type settings at Ultra, and things like clouds and light shafts etc all at Ultra. But things like Building detail set to high - this has been a refinement process, alot of videos on optimised settings out there which are great as they dont drop the visual quality too much, and still give a great visuals

I dont consider the 4070 a ‘set to ultra and forget’ kind of card (in my experience)

Frame rate wise, after a period of load in at EGLL with FSTL cranked and as mentioned above not all settings at Ultra I see FPS 30 - 40. When I spin the camera it my drop into the high 20’s, but mostly its high 30’s and into the 40s. VRAM usage will go all the way to the card max in this scenario, its where I think you would get benefit from a 4080 with 16Gb, but you are paying through the nose for it.

Of course this is just the heaviest usage location for me, nearly everywhere else the frames are into the 50-60 fps range.

my 5800x3d and 4070ti have been a fantastic peering for me and I am completely satisfied. Its awesome in the sim, but amazing in other games too, Ive started playing Red Dead Redemption 2 again because with this combo I can run it at Ultra settings for everything and get over 100fps.

For me the 4070ti has been brilliant.

That’s odd. DX12 runs perfectly smooth in 4k and in VR with my “inferior” AMD drivers.

No problems with AMD whatsoever

yep got the 850 watt power supply everything works fine now thanks for the heads up

I had to upgrade to 850w as well  Should arrive tomorrow.

3090 Ti here.
Most benchmarks show the 7900 XTX well ahead of the 3090 Ti in ray racing and especially occlusion mapping. But they both have 24GB VRAM, so for me it’s not financially sensible to swap. Unless of course I could work out an even money deal.

I also looked both cards and decided to go with the 7900 XT
after few days it looks like I made a wrong choice
No doubt, it is a very strong card
when it works. It took a few CTD to figure it out the Radeon driver is crashing when MSFS runs in DX11 and opening Navigraph Chart in browser. Many user reporting this issue. Obvious choice would be to run in DX12, but then the scenery is messed up with add-on airports
sadly, but thinking to change it to a 4070ti. Will miss the 20Gb VRAM, but in this case less is more (being able to do a flight without CTD)
