4080S/7800X3D - Disappointing performance, very good FPS but absolutely horrendous stutters when taxiing

Hi everyone, I use the PMDG 737-600 as well as scenery for airports like KBOS with VATSIM. I play on almost everything ultra at 4K, TLOD knocked down to 180, DX12 and frame gen. I am just surprised at how poor my FPS is when I’m actually moving, at a gate it will be 90% fine, some panning can be weird but I can deal with that, although it’s annoying. However, when I taxi the frames can completely tank when looking around. What’s really odd to me is that the devmode FPS doesn’t even recognize these drops, the lowest it’ll give me is like 55 FPS, but the stutters are absolutely in the 10s for FPS. I’m here just looking for some ideas because I thought the 7800X3D would be my saving grace for the sim. I am mainthread limited, DX11 is even worse. I thank you in advance for any tips you can give me, I’ve tried so many different things but I’m hoping maybe someone can help. I posted this because I haven’t really seen anyone with the same issue as me with the 7800X3D on searching, it’s strange that my FPS are so good except for these terrible stutters.

Hi @xxFirekirbyxx and welcome to the forum !,

Game data requires a network connection to the game server to complete, and when there is a delay in connecting to the server, there may be issues such as lagging frames and reduced performance. It’s basically unrelated to your computer configuration!

What can I do about that?
I do indeed use Wifi instead of Ethernet, so you’re telling me this could be causing me lag? Any way to confirm this?

You mentioned Vatsim. Do you have this problem if you are not connected to Vatsim?

Happens regardless of being on the network unfortunately, just figured I’d throw out that I use it. Might be worse on it, but I was having a difficult time telling if there was that much of a difference. Offline still stutters a lot.

I’ve had success in following any of the eleventy hundred ‘how to flush your GPU shader cache’ YouTube videos. Give that a shot

You didn’t mention your GPU.
If it supports Resizable Bar, try enabling it in your system BIOS (if it’s not already…)

Also, I believe that disabling Windows HPET (High Precision Event Timer) in Device Manager, and replacing it with ISLC (Intelligent Standby List Cleaner) significantly improved my system performance.

Some many settings to tweak. One advice I can give u. Forget about the framerates. That is not important to have a smooth sim. Set max framerate at 60 in nvcp. Set the sim on 50 percent of monitor refresh rate. And put your monitor at 60 hertz. Use dx12.
Try it to believe it.
Thank me later.

The thing is, capping FPS does nothing to improve smoothness in the most challenging scenarios. All it does is cap framerate, which leads to the debate whether 60 FPS is better (smoother) than 30 FPS in the least challenging scenarios.

When I see 85 FPS and 12ms latency @4K flying my Bonanza over the Sahara, I know my CPU/GPU subsystems are performing very well.

When I hop in the Fokker F28 on the tarmac at a busy airport, and the best I see is 20 FPS and 35ms latency, I know I need to tweak some settings.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that I think I have solved the problem. For some reason, setting a FPS cap in NVIDIA Control Panel and having VSYNC on both in game and in the control panel has completely boosted my performance. I can now use TLOD of 300-400 on VATSIM at airports like Gatwick. DX12, DLSS, and FG still on, nothing else modified besides LOD sliders and VSYNC in game. My best guess is my 60Hz monitor was messing with something and high FPS with FG? Not sure though, but I’m not questioning it. Thanks for all the responses! If you have any questions or want to continue the discussion, feel free to do so. I have been trying to fix this for weeks.

Nice! Whats your fps limit in nvidia cp? And what’s your object LOD? Any AI planes at airports and sky?

Hi there,

FPS limit in NVIDIA Control Panel is at 60. Object LOD at 100, I’ve looked at comparison videos and can’t tell virtually any difference between 100 and 200. No AI so to speak, but on VATSIM there IS traffic and at Gatwick there was quite a lot, but it doesn’t really seem to make it that much worse. I could set the Terrain LOD down a little bit to avoid the small microstutters if I wanted, but it wasn’t really causing enough harm to want me to change it. There are still some tiny microstutters here and there, but I’m aware that the sim maxes out at 300-400 LOD on any system and it’s MUCH better than it was, so I don’t mind at all.

Thank you, that worked well. Took off from KLAX to KSEA. In the pmdg 787-800 with just flight’s AI plane models and AI traffic online.

Started with 400 TLOD was quite smooth but 20 minutes later it began jerking oddly enough in smooth way. I lowered the TLOD to 215 and it smoothed out again.

Restarted the sim to conduct a turnaround flight from KSEA to KLAX. Seattle was so smooth with very minor microstutters (do to AI planes). Los Angeles area was also very smooth even approaching and landing at KLAX. KLAX had its little stutters but very manageable compared to what it used to be before (unsimable).

50% refresh rate did wonders for me, that setting will stay like that forever
