4090 causing stuttering?

Well something is? So I recently installed a 4090 and am now getting constant stutters, big ones every few seconds, even in the main menu. I have 2 VR headsets, a Pico 4 and a Reverb G2. In the Pico 4 its tricky to get working at all but when I do it flickers blank and stutters a lot. usually steam vr completely gives up after 5 mins. So I thought this is an issue with the Pico 4, but the same thing happens on my G2 and this never happened before. Now I even have the issue in 2D, again big stutters every few seconds.
My next thought was that it was the OS, which is Windows 11 but I am dual booting Windopws 10 and the same thing happens there.
Even stranger is that I have had some long sessions with the 4090 just a few days ago without any issues. And all other games seem flawless (VR or 2D).
My previous card was a 2070 and although I had to tone down the graphics a lot, I have a few good VR sessions in my G2.
I really dont want to but im thinking of removing the 4090 and putting my 2070 back (for tesing) unless someone on here can help. Im at a loss. Here is my sys info if it helps:

Last update has problems with DLSS3 and Vsync. Maybe is that the problem. Try to disable dlss and see if it works.

Hello @TailoredSpark77,

When you installed your 4090, did you do a full removal and re-install of your Nvidia drivers? We’ve seen several other people reporting this same issue, and running DDU and then re-installing the latest Nvidia drivers fixed the issue for them.

If you haven’t done this yet, please give it a try and then report back to let us know if that solved the performance issue for you.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated.
Just disabled frame generation (DLSS 3) and just used TAA, no DLSS. Alas I am still seeing lots of stutter.

I always do a clean install of the nvidia drivers via the custom option in the installer. I did a clean install of both the game ready and studio driver, as of writing this is 528.24.
I also downloaded and installed DDU as suggested but it asked me to pay to use it. I didnt want to pay since it just does the same thing as the clean install I have been doing doesnt it? I dont mind paying if you still think its worth it.
Its great to hear that I am not the only one with this issue though

Apologies. You dont need to pay for DDU. I must have clicked on one of the ads and downloaded the wrong thing yesterday.
I downloaded the correct app now, uninstalled the previous drivers through DDU, reinstalled the latest nvidia drivers, restarted, then ran MSFS. Alas I am still seeing stutters. I shall try in VR later as this is a better test but I dont hold out much hope :frowning:

OK I think Ive found or narrowed it down at least. I tried unplugging my network cable and it ran with no stutters, even in VR it was fine. Plugged the network cable back in and the stutters came back. My suspicions are…
Even though I have a hardwired connection to a nearby switch, the switch has a wireless connection to the main router which is a couple of rooms away. I think my neighbours wifi is interrupting my own wifi, and hence every time MSFS tries to get any data off the net, it struggles often and causes stuttering in sim. I guess other games dont use the internet connection so much, which is why they seem fine.
I guess I need to move my router so I dont need to rely on this wireless connection for internet access.

You have a couple of options that are easier than moving an existing setup.

  1. Install a second router, physically plugged into your local network switch (plugging it directly into your router introduces complications - easier to just use a network switch, as you’ve probably already found out), and you’ll be able to run it on a different channel / different band than anyone nearby;

  2. Again, run a second router, physically plugged into your local network switch, but in setup run it as an access point.

I use the first technique, have all my security cameras plugged in, no need to reconfigure the ISP-supplied wireless modem. Now, this WILL probably involve some drilling of holes to pass the cabling through from one room to another (or at least hiding the cables behind furniture and under carpets, or using floor cable covers - quite useful) but it’s well worth it in terms of flexibility.

Bonne chance.

Not that this helps specifically, but I have a 4090 and don’t have any stutters whatsoever, using DLSS3 and frame gen on all settings on ULTRA. Something definitely seems corrupted/messed up on your end.

I had a similar problem. Seemed to be something in Windows networking not managing the streaming in MSFS well and pegging the CPU. After many hours of troubleshooting, attemping Windows repairs and driver updates, etc. I ended up just wiping the boot/Windows drive, reinstalling Windows fresh, and then reinstalling MSFS and pointing it to my previous OneStore/Community folders. Now stutter-free.

An extreme solution, but weirdly it solved the problem for me.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions guys. I think what I might do first just to be doubly sure is buy a 20m ethernet cable and run that along the floor between the router and the switch just temporarily, just to be sure the wifi is the problem in my case.

Your Ryzen 5 5600x and the RTX 4090 are a terrible combination. They are causing a huge bottleneck, and thus, stutters.
Upgrade your processor to, at least, a Ryzen 9…

( not convinced?) try for yourself at

That does sound plausible. My CPU is just running at stock currently. 3.7ghz, but I sould be able to overclock it to about 4.5ghz, which should help somewhat, no?
Anyway i’ll try this ethernet cable first.

Try reading about bottlenecking. There are lots of videos on YouTube that explain why it’s so important to “balance “ your CPU and GPU.
I managed to get only 1.8 procent with my rig. Now everything is as smooth as silk.

Hi All,
Just to let you know, I put the 20m ethernet cable in to try and remove the stutters like I said and now MSFS will not even get past the loading screen, doesnt even get as far as “checking for updates” Just CTD whilst still loading. I dont think this latest issue is related to the ethernet cable though, its just a coincidence. I have not run the sim for a few days so probably I would have had the same problem if I had run it yesterday. And now I removed the cable and retored everything to how it was. I tried unistalling and re-installing FS but I still get a CTD in the same place.

I think the stuttering had been getting steadily worse though as I hadnt noticed it before. So now I am thinking the 4090 might be at fault. My next port of call therefore is to remove the 4090 and put my 2070 back in, see if MSFS at least loads.

The 4090 is what you get when you “take parts binning to the next level.” There’s not much new in it, just parts pushed way beyond the norms, a speed-up from using a smaller process, but still resulting in crazy power consumption - which shouldn’t be the case. The process shrink alone should have caused energy consumption to drop and performance to increase.

It’s basically a beefed-up 30xx card. Still using the same Ampere architecture.

So the card is definitely something to look all cross-eyed and squinty at.

Also, you may have found your power supply’s limit. You can’t just add up all the component power consumption - you have to factor in the efficiency of your power supply as well. If your parts add up to 700 watts, and you have an 800 watt power supply, you’re going to come up short even with an 80% efficiency factor, you’re still short 75 watts. Even a 90% efficient power supply will be right at the margins.

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas. I dont think my power supply is an issue though, its a brand new corsair RM1000x. Should be good enough.

Just got it to load now at least. I turned off “online functionality” in the “data” tab of general options, maybe thats why it didnt load. Running FS as administrator got it to load somehow and then I turned “online functionality” back on. Its still stuttery as hell though and seem to be getting worse.

Bah, I need to sleep, maybe I will have one of my brain â– â– â– â– â–  in the night.

Why is it so hard to understand that all your stutter problems are caused by the simpel fact that your CPU is way to weak to work flawlessly together with your RTX 4090? (Bottlenecking) :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
I”m have worked for almost 35 years as a PC hardware specialist and have seen many of the same problems.
“Just” upgrade your cpu to at least a Ryzen 9 5900x and the stutters are gone.
Or, downgrade the GPU, it’s so simple…

Thanks. its not hard to understand but what is hard to understand is why when I unplugged my ethernet cable before everything seemed smooth. Although I just unplugged it again and it was stuttering again.

Also, a new CPU is expensive and fiddly to install so i’d rather exhaust every other possibility first. Probably the best option for me is to put the old card back in and see if it helps; at least initially.

PS. The video in the forum you linked to… his stutters are not as bad as mine. I will try to record it on my phone later.

Quick and cheap video I know, but I just wanted to edit it and upload it as quick as possible. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 | Bad Stutters - YouTube
The first thing to notice is the warning which comes up every time, Ive removed everything from my community folder and still get the warning. I didnt actully fly, just loaded an airport from world map and let it run. I think you can see the hideous stuttering. I will downgrade the GPU later.
