Im not looking for a difference in FPS, just graphical fidelity
Like I said, friend. You can spend your money whatever way you wish. But you won’t get any better fidelity nor performance with a 3080 in that system.
When I got my new PC 2 years back, I put my old 1070 up for sale ASAP since it was still worth money. A friend was interested, since I had upgraded his system a couple of months before, but carried over his old GPU (750Ti). He really needed a new GPU.
We ran benchmarks on my system (4700K) with the 1070 compared to what he was seeing on his current machine with his GPU. He was impressed so he bought it. We popped the 1070 into his rig - an 8700K.
The same benchmarks were yielding about 20% better performance using the 1070 on an 8700K over the 4700K, since he was actually able to use the card fully. His system wasn’t CPU bottlenecked like mine was.
It’s the same with your system. You’re likely leaving 20-ish% of what that 1080Ti can do on the table already due to CPU bottleneck. Adding a 3080 isn’t going to change that. If your CPU isn’t able to feed the 1080Ti properly, a faster GPU isn’t going to make any difference in either performance of visual fidelity. Particularly in a CPU-bound title like MSFS. MSFS doesn’t use any of the RTX or DLSS that the 3080 offers. So you’re not going to get better looking graphics. You’re going to get exactly the same you’re getting now.
Anyway, like I said, it’s up to you. I just hope you’re not too disappointed after you spend all that money. But in the end, it will just make you want to upgrade the rest of the system shortly thereafter anyway.
Thank you for taking the time to explain that, that makes sense now. I think I’ll elect to upgrade all at once then. Any thoughts on the 5900x?
Well, that’s my next CPU as soon as they become available where I don’t have to sell an arm, leg and my left nut to get it. I have an x470 board, so I won’t benefit from PCIe Gen 4, but I can deal with that. It’s significantly faster than my current 2700X and I can totally use those extra cores for the other stuff I do on this machine.
I had that CPU, it was already heavily bottlenecking a basic 1080 in CPU bound games, you’re not going to use more than 50% of that GPU in most cases, especially on MSFS.
if you don’t do video editing, 3d rendering work, etc. then a 5600X or 5800X will serve you better
I’m not upgrading from my 1080ti/8700K until something goes snap crackle pop (knocks on wood)
I’m super impressed on how my setup handles the sim, I know some more performance optimization down the road and my setup is going to really shine for its age. You can pretty much feel the sim isn’t using your hardware to its full capabilities.
Hello,
I have moved your post to PC & Hardware, as that is where discussions of processors, memory, graphics cards, storage, drivers, etc. goes.
Basically a better processor gets you higher LOD and a better GPU improves detail. it is actually a bit more complex than that but basically they both improve the sim but in different areas. It will partly depend on what you fly, where you fly, and how low you fly as to which will give you the most benefit.
For example I went from a RTX 2060 to a RTX 3070 with the same older processor (i5 8400 6 core 3.8 Ghz) and ram (32GB) and my typical frames went up from low 30’s to mid 40s. at 1440p. As I mainly fly low and slow i tend to wind my LOD back a bit which offsets the older processor.
As for VR - it is demanding on both. You need to read the VR threads as the demands in VR with something like a G2 (two 2060x2060 displays plus 3D overhead) are different to even a 4K 2D setup.
Hi mate, I’ve recently moved up to the i9 and a Z490-F mobo, with 32GB DDR4 RAM - I’m still using my ASUS GTX 1080 ti Turbo with an Artic Accelero Exreme IV cooler(so badly needed with this card), and I’m also still using a SSD. I get a solid 45fps @2560x1440, unless I spawn into a new and improved but unoptimized area, where I see drops to 25fps, followed by a CTD at times(stay clear of London atm without a beasty pc - UK north is good). All other areas that I’ve tested work flawlessly and I’m liking the new airports and area’s around the Northwest US and Canada. Also in Australia due to the basic Bing terrain that seem’s to look amazing around down-under outback and coastlines; Sydney airport and city NSW, Parafield airport SA, Alice Springs-Uluru NT, and Southport QLD, plus Brisbane QLD is coming out soon.
So I could only recommend that you ‘spend up’ on this latest gear(MB-RAM-CPU-COOLING) and utilise your video card and powersupply if it’s 750w or better, and drives etc. Then later when vid cards are back into production, jump on the waiting list to get a 3xxx series. I’ve been waiting 4 months now for my ROG Strix RTX 3080oc, but I’m now 8th in line for the next shipment to Aus, fingers crossed it’s this year lol.
I have the same system, but my cpu runs @4800 and my gpu is a 1080, the sim runs at ultra settings and 150 render scaling, 1920x1080 res, vsync locked @30: smooth as silk, never had a sim running so beautifully. And my 4790k was my best investment ever.
Ensure your BIOS is updated to support 3070, some people report about this problem - they were not able to run 3070 on their old BIOS.
Have the same i5 8400 paired with a 2060super 2666mhz ram. Have new mobo, ram and a i7 10700k on the way.8400 has been doing great but not great when I am ready to load up FBW A32NX or the 787.Also bottlenecks a lot in X-PLANE and its not even maxed settings.
I am guilty to have both of LOD settings to 200.As a tubeliner guy I like have higher detail at higher altitudes and the frames sits mostly into the mid 20s on the ground.Otherwise I am GPU bound on 1440p ultrawide with the 2060super and my fps tends hover around 50 if I fly somewhere like KeyWest.Saved a bit more frames lowering shadows,AO,Clouds,Texture Resolution.
Everything you mentioned is on point. Will let you know the changes I note.I am not expecting a huge fps increase but I am expecting the sim to run more fluid.Hoping I can get my hands on a new GPU but honestly the 2060super with an overclock is still surviving.
Well the 2060 super is meant to still be roughly the same ball park as a 3060 (non TI) for normal rendering, less VRAM of course
@EdamllamaB Yes less vram but higher bus over the 3060.Nvidia cutting corners to save money.12gb with 192bus lol seriously not saying higher bus will improve performance but it will draw data in much faster.Look at the 1080ti has a higher bus than both cards and to this probably still ahead a bit in some games.
Looking forward to the 10700k.If cards were easily available I’d definitely sell the 2060super.
