4k flat or ultra wide curved to consider for FS2020/LOL+ movie to consider?

Hello community

How are you ?

I’m building a new PC with ryzen 7800 x3d and RTX 4090.
As I will use my screen for desktop software (PPT, Word and Excel), gaming (Apex, FS2020 and LOL) and watching stream.

I hesitate a lot on :

  • 4k flat (2160p) Corsair Xeneon 32UHD 144hz
  • 4k curved (2160p) Samsung neo G8
  • Ultra Wide (1600p) UltraGear 38GN950P-B, Allienware AW3423DWF

I appreciate your advise to which cable i have to use : HDMI or Display Port taking in consideration my GPU.

Thanks in advance

Hello @joekes007, I’m okay thank you

4K/2160p resolution would be a the best choice to pair with a RTX4090 because a RTX4090 is very powerful and would be overkill for lesser resolutions, so it would be a shame not to make the most of that incredible Graphics Card!

I can’t really advise you about choosing between flat and curved because it is a very subjective thing, it’s all about personal preference, so you’ll have to pick whichever you would prefer. Have you used a curved display before?

The cable you need will depend on the particular display that you choose, so I wouldn’t be able to help you with that until you’ve chosen a display.

Do you curve your books to read them?

It is not about HDMI and DP. There are many different HDMI cables. You have to pick the right ones in any case

Read about the different HDMI versions and the output and input specs of your card and monitor.

HDMI != HDMI

Usually with a good monitor there will be a adequate cable in the package.

Hello
Never used curves before.
I’m afraid to be frustrated as I don’t let rtx 4090 giving the best performance.

Hello
I don’t curve book.
Interested on réflexion and what it leads too.
Thanks

Good day!

Be aware that with wide screen monitors, the screen is beautiful, but the edges of the image are stretched due to MSFS rendering and so this part doesn’t look so great. I currently have curved ultra wide screen which I love, but for MSFS, the stretched image is ugly at the edges.

Hello
Thanks for feedback.
Can you send a screenshot on ultra ?
I really hesitate a lot. But may be with Samsung neo g8 as it’s not as big as g9, stretch is less. Isn’t it ?

I am not at home right now, but I found an example someone else posted where you can see the stretching on the left edge. The last few days, I’ve been looking at getting a new non-ultrawide regular monitor because of the distortion.

Hello
I don’t see it.
Please advise how you detect it.

Hello again
You have g9 neo which is 4k oled, but size is huge. Di you think that stretch will also appear whatever ultra wide screen is.
I see the stretch, sorry for my last message

If you see the stretching at the edges it probably means that you sit too far from your display. See this for projection geometry:
https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/585276-realistic-field-of-view-fov-and-3-display-distortion/
The post above is about 3 displays but applicable also to flat or gently curved display, as the 3 displays mentioned in the post are not set at a high angle - flat display, gently curved display, or three displays set in (neraly) straight line compensate the apparent image stretching due to perspective.

So As i understood, Ultrawide is useless.
It’s better to invest on flat or slightly curved 1, 2 or 3 monitors
So choice is to be made between corsair UHD32 (144hz) and samsung G8 (240 hz that I will never reach in TAA with FS2020)

I had the flat vs curved 4K decision a few years ago.
I went with flat after much research. Decided the reflections and distortion were not worth it.

Was also pleased that running games at 1440p scaled very well when 4K was too slow and in-game scaling unavailable.

I do recommend g-sync or free-sync. It does make a difference.
Also, high refresh like 120hz or greater has a side effect of decreased ghosting at higher refresh rates when possible.

Currently you have the option in MSFS to configure 3 displays with proper geometry (triple display support) and you can set them at higher angles - you will be able to see more into left and right. All three displays should be the same size and resolution.

But three displays set at high angles occupy a lot of space and are not convenient for productivity tasks (other than simming).

So one slightly curved ultrawide is a good compromise - much more convenient for productivity tasks. For simming you will just need to follow my geometrical advice linked in my post above. The main trick - move the display closer to your eyes, then perspective will correct the apparent stretching of the image at the edges. But in such setup you will generally have a forward view (like a panoramic cinema screen) without much of left and right side views.

In summary:

  • simming or racing only - go for 3 displays of the same type set at high angles (eg 45 degrees) with MSFS “experimental” triple display support (my Avsim post not applicable)
  • productivity work and simming - go for slightly curved ultrawide (my Avsim post applies).

If you want the best possible immersion - go for VR with Pimax Crystal or Varjo Aero. This is the ultimate solution for VFR light airplane flying. If you prefer IFR and airliners - triple displays are also to be considered as ultimate solution.

Hello

Many thanks.
Looks that i’m more oriented to Samsung G8 neo despite it’s mini led not Oled. I will continue seeing benchmark to be sure.
I will see in the future is I will make multi screen or wait for new technology that will not lead to stretch.
Have a nice day to all people.

Kinda funny, getting my post tagged whilst yer building the overlord of machines compared to mine, only because my monitor is bigger than my gpu. Feels like yer going to do the same, but yer gpu is much beefier..

I had the same consideration about ultrawide back then(2008-ish?), but the main drawback about ultrawide is, that your graphicscard has to be able to fill in the extra sides. Mine can barely keep up, but it’s doing it’s best chugging along for it’s 8 years of life, of which the last 3 years now in flightsim. I can honestly tell you that i’ve never actually noticed any stretching whilst gaming… i’m pretty sure it’s in the FOV from the sim itself. I get anoyed when things dont look right, like the “zoom” that flightsim has. Depending on what airframe i fly i’ll have it set to either close or wide in the camera settings, but when landing, i tilt the camera down a bit, so i can see the runway proper in the nose high attitude, and the dials on the bottom.. so that might have been a bit of a stretch that you were seeing… Anyways, good luck with the build and make sure to use the search function to find out any tricks and tips other users have bestowed upon us in their quest to get the best running sim out there.

Had a mate of mine running a 4080 so mad, he sold his PC, went to xbox for a year… now he’s back on pc, running the exact GTX 1080 i’m running and happily flying… msfs is a mad beast at times, some times it’s a drop of the dice and a whole lot of searching to dail it in just right. High framerates is usually not what the beast wants to do, it’s usually happier with slow and steady

Hello
In FS2020, I don’t target FPS more than 100 hz (because you can hardly reach it without DLSS and in 4k, and TLOD 200). I want to make a right choice.
Freesync montiors can work with Nvidia but I wonder if targeting G sync is much reasonable.
I do fly from and to heavy and high demanding airport with light and heavy aircraft. My build will last couple of years but everything has to be perfect.

Well, you’ve got the kit for it… and it definately feels like you’ve got the knowledge to make it work.. just dont tear out those last few hairs on top of your avatar… as it’s updatetime next week already, if you’ve been around since the start of this 2020 venture, you’ll know the forums will be flooding again and (*i’m jinxing myself here right now) we’ll find out if it actually works after updating msfs.

I’ve actually not used G or freesync before, thought it was more for those above 100fps’ers who see they are missing 2 frames out of the 2500 they are running. Just showing my age here, hahaha.

Use a DP cable, DP1.4.

Hello to all of you ?
I finallyu gave up on corsair as I had issues in 2 deliveries with Amazon.
I took asus rog XG32UQ in 4k and FS2020 is amazing. I recommend it a lot.
Flat experience is good and pricture is stable in each ongle.
I limited FPS to 72 and no issues in big airport
