5800x3d to 9800x3d

Has anybody made this upgrade? Wondering if it’s enough of a boost to make the AM5 build worth it at this point. Paired with a FE 4090.

Thank you in advance!

No, but I went 7800x3D to 9800x3D and even that was worth it for the lows alone! Stutters are a thing of the past.

Yes I did exactly that upgrade. In MSFS 2020, where I still do most of my flying until MSFS 2024 drastically improves across the board (UI, performance, quality aircraft addons), I get around a 50% performance improvement in CPU limited scenarios at the same settings, which is exactly what I wanted for being able to maintain my 40 FPS lock pretty much everywhere for VR motion reprojection purposes.

I’m upgrading from a 5800x3d to a 9800x3d, I have every component except my 5090. I’m upgrading my GPU from a 6800XT, so I’m expecting a massive jump in performance.

I’m hoping to do this switch at some point; based on others’ experiences I expect a significant improvement in CPU-limited scenarios (big cities/airports, near the ground) where I currently have to trade off LOD to maintain a comfortable frame rate via the ‘dynamic settings’ fps target.

However I haven’t been willing to fight scalpers and early adopters for a 9800X3D so I’m holding out a while longer.

5800 to 7800 is dramatic, with a 4090 9800 would be ballistic.

I was planning to do that upgrade path but I am waiting on the 9900x3d or 9950x3d. Highly recommend getting a CPU with more than 8 cores!

No point going from an 8 core to 8 core even if its faster!

I went from i7-10750H to 9800x3d keeping the 3080ti. I am enjoying VR with g2 using mostly high/ultra settings at 30-35fps.

Note that the recommended power plans will limit the game to run on just the X3D chiplet’s cores on the 9900X3D or 9950X3D (so, 6 or 8 physical cores), leaving the rest to probably sit idle.

Some folks prefer this to minimize the chance of background processes stealing a slice of CPU time on the X3D CCD, though, so YMMV.

Well a 1982 Corvette V8 is a bit different than a 2024… Same thing with VRAM, kinda sorta depends on the GPU rather than than the GB count.

I made the same upgrade last month and I’m very happy with the performance increase.

Don’t do it.

It would be a complete waste of money if you play in 4K (and I’d assume so since you have a 4090).

A year ago I did the AM4 to AM5 upgrade from R5 5600 to R7 7800X3D (playing in 4K on a 4090) and it hardly made any difference.
YOU already have the 3rd best gaming CPU and you are 100% GPU bound in 4K, even on a 4090.

Look at these benchmarks and the actual numbers in 1080p (!)

Now think about the money you would have to spend without gaining one single ave fps in 4K native. And there is hardly any value in slightly better 1% lows when they are already good enough now.

If you don’t believe me, search the internet and you will find plenty good tech sources telling you exactly what i did from personal experience.

Maybe better invest in a high-end 4K OLED monitor or TV.

Hmm, I find that with my 5800X3D and 7900XTX, set at 4k native resolution, TAA, Ultra settings, ground and low-altitude flight at large airports in large cities seems consistently CPU-limited on the main thread, and doesn’t drive my GPU to full usage (it actually throttles down its clock a bit from the max, making the GPU usage numbers look fuller than they really are).

I’m fairly confident that switching out the 5800X3D for a faster-clocked 9800X3D CPU will allow me to push the GPU up to full clock as well.

I’m in the same situation, running a 5800X3D, with my eyes on the 9800X3D.
GPU is a RTX 3090, and I play mostly at 4K in a combination of medium to ultra settings.

In this usage the 5800X3D only starts to stutter and dipping below 30-35 fps with complex airliners and 3rd party airports at ground level.
For me, I find FS 2024 does a much better job in these CPU bound situations.

For now I am not in a hurry, I can comfortably wait for dealer scalper prices to cool down a bit.

9800X3D here with 470 super ti. 32gb RAM. FPS 75 in 4K, all in Ultra. Monitor at 240hz using LG monitor. MSFS 2020.

I wanted to share my experience after moving from 5800 X3D to the 9800 X3D.

I upgraded only the CPU, remaining with my RTX 3090.
Normally for any other game this would perhaps be a very unbalanced configuration, top of the line CPU and an “average” GPU in 2025.

However for MSFS, I think it works well enough.
The 3090 still benefits from the new DLSS 4 transformer model, and together with other tweaks that shall not be named here the result is quite satisfactory in 4K.

Major difference as I expected is with complex 3rd party airliners and airports, while on the ground, coming in for landing or even just taxing. The 9800X3D is able to maintain a higher base frame rate, one example I was passing from 28 fps to around 40~42 fps in the same situation.

At first sight doesn’t seem like much improvement, but it does makes a difference as it increases the lower bottom fps limit in CPU bound situations but it also brings a much needed increase in smoothness and fps consistency with a lot less stutters.

The improvements were most noticeable in FS2020. In 2024 the uplift is also visible welcomed but perhaps less noticeable comparatively as 2024 is more CPU optimized but it is also heavier on the GPU.

By the way the 3090 may be a mid range card in 2025 but those 24 GB are gold !!!
