5800X3D vs. 7800X3D from i7-6700k

Hi all,

Im planning to upgrade from my i7-6700K and deciding between the 5800X3D and 7800X3D for MSFS 2020/2024. Running on a 1440p ultrawide and a 3070, I could go with:

5800X3D: New AM4 board, keep my 32GB DDR4 (3600MHz CL16), total cost around USD $400 converted from RM.

Or

7800X3D: New AM5 board, DDR5 RAM, around $800+ total.

Wondering if the extra $400+ for the 7800X3D is worth it in terms of performance uplift. Anyone with experience on either? Thanks!

Also consider the 9800X3D that just launched and costs about the same as 7800X3D. Availability is the question. Could be back in stock mid December.

7800X3D is known as 4% faster than 5800X3D 4K display
So…

Since you have to upgrade your mobo either way, I’d go with AM5 and the 7800X3D. And as others have mentioned though, if your going AM5, certainly consider the 9800X3D. Current prices of the 7800X3D are near the 9800X3D.

Yes, the DDR5 is worth it IMHO. There’s a lot of room for growth on that platform.

Go straight to the 9800X3D. Forget 7800X3D at this point. It sells for the same price here anyway… but the 9800X3D outperforms the 7800X3D easily.

You NEED DDR5 for it!

EDIT: currently, in my shop where i bought the 9800X3D, the 7800X3D is even more expensive

I upgraded from the 7800X3D and it was absolutely worth it.

If I were you, I’d go straight to 9800X3D / AM5 platform. As the others said.

If cost is a factor I’d save money until I could do it. I definitely wouldn’t be going 5800X3D or 7800X3D now. 5800X3D / AM4 is end of life tech. It would be ok (5800X3D is no slouch in MSFS, even today) if you absolutely can’t spend the money on newer tech (AM5/DDR5), and don’t mind not being as future-proof (AM4).

7800X3D is right out, to quote Monty Python. You might as well go 9800X3D if you’re going AM5 / DDR5 now.

I went from i7-6700k to 7800x3d. Super happy with it and the upgrade. I would go with AM5 for future proofing.

Conventional wisdom is skip the 5800X3D if you don’t already have an AM4 system to swap it into, though you do save some money in the short run by reusing the compatible RAM from the Intel system.

This is not a bad way to go if you’re short on spare cash now but expect to be able to make a large upgrade in the future when you’re not fighting early release inventory shortages.

I’m expecting to sit on my own 5800X3D for another year, especially if MSFS 2024 gives me the performance uplifts I hope for, and then most likely move to a 9800X3D.

You would say this also in msfs 2024? I have 7800x3d with a 4080 super and sometimes stutters in 24.. is it worth the upgrade to 9800x3d?

No. In FS24, currently your GPU, respective VRAM is king. Invest in a GPU, its better spent right now.

hoped/thought this is just a bug? i already have 16 gb ram xD

100% agree.

Game is very CPU limited.

I’d def. go AM5 for future, and consider 9x3d

difference between 5x3d and 7x3d is noticeable in MSFS (not all games) as I have both.

I’m waiting for 9x3d to become available as people are showing 15-30% increase in fps.

I’m currently CPU limited with a 7900x3D/4090 setup. If you are CPU limited, then you will see the higher end of fps increase.

This isn’t true for me, or everyone.

My GPU has never hit 100% or even above 85% with the game maxed in 4k or pimax VR.

I’m completely CPU limited on a 7900x3D/4090

Yeah with a 4090, you are set. But me with 12GB am not really happy. VRAM is just too less… :frowning:

I’m just saying that 2024 is specifically GPU or CPU limited. It depends on your setup.

In a balanced setup, its generally CPU limited. Which is why they moved the glass cockpit refresh to another core for instance… it helps, but the mainthread is still very saturated with higher LODs.

The GPU has many more parrellel duties that can generally keep up.

Obviously everyones situation is different and your milage may vary, but if you are building a new PC, I’d focus on a decent CPU because most of the modern GPU’s can keep up with the limitations of the mainthread right now and you have many more GPU intensive options to scale down or disable than you have CPU options if you are limited (basically just LOD setting)

LOL, yeah a 4090…

My 3090 Ti is maxed out, and it’s clearly bottlenecking my 7950X3D @ 4K Ultra settings.

So the question is, will they improve the code/sim that we have also smooth experience with the 7800x3d/5800x3d OR do we all have to go with the 9800x3d and a 4090 ?

I mean its very frustrating when i look to the recommended specs for 2024.. we all have high end pc‘s or prepared/build new systems and all i see is most people have nevertheless these perfomance issues/stutters..

I hope they will/can. The current recommended specs are a joke, idk how they could come up with that.
