660 Measured Download MBPS ---- 15 to 18 MBPS Actual. Can Anyone Shed Some Light

While downloading in-sim liveries my download speed was 15 to 18 mbps. While continuing to download, I opened a speed test and got the results stated above. Only thing I can think of is pc WIFI adapter is shot. Is there anything else that would cause this?
I have Spectrum’s highest service level.
Thanks.

There’s likely nothing wrong on your end. If you get good results on a speed test your Wi-Fi adapter, router and internet connection are working fine.
The limit is elsewhere, e.g. the MSFS servers the connection between your ISP and them.

I don’t think it explains this, but beware of the difference between megabytes per second and megabits per second, just in case. The 660 would be megabits per second (Mbit/s or Mbps) while many programs display download speeds in megabytes per second (usually written as MB/s), where 660 Mbit/s = 82.5 MB/s.

Good info, I will watch for that. Thanks!

I just got 1gb internet, real speed 600-700mb, and thanks to Windows 11 dying on me I have had to do a full reinstall.
My speeds in game when downloading vary from 8-10mb all the way to 200+ mb.
I am sure that this is server related

Aeluwas, your are right about the different speed measurement speeds. Thanks again for that. Now if I can only figure out why it takes 22 or more hours to reinstall the sim. I have been afflicted lately with the "Missing Packages Need Update) error which, despite all the various solutions mentioned in this forum, always results in a reinstall for me—four times in the last two months. Grrrr

Ael also mentioned it might be server problems. I think I am going to go with that and quit struggling with a solution.
Thanks.

I can tell you that I use Proton VPN during downloads, and disconnect it during gameplay. For whatever reason, I seem to get a much higher and more consistent bitrate with a VPN connected during downloads.

15-45 Mb/s avg. w/o.
200-250 Mb/s avg. with VPN enabled.
I have a 1 Gb/s fiber connection and a WiFi 6 router and wireless card, so I can get up to 600 Mb/s over WiFi.

One possible reason for that has to do with the ISP intentionally throttling the connections to known high-demand servers. It sees ‘Azure Server’ and throttles. With a VPN it has no way of knowing what you’re connecting to.

It could also be a routing issue, i.e. the bandwidth between the Azure server and you via your ISP is poor, but the bandwidth between both the Azure server and the VPN, and between the VPN and you is good.

Someone posted this link to a test page for Azure servers. I found it helpful.

Thanks. I’ll try it out.
