7900 XTX Performance?

Hi guys

I am currently on an RTX 3080 10GB with an 5800x3D.

I’m thinking about upgrading to a 7900XTX for better performance bu I only found older posts complaining about driver issues and disappointing performance.

So how are things at the moment, would an upgrade to a 7900 XTX in the Reverb G2 provide a substanzial performance boost or are the issues still present?

Cheers!

PS: I plan on upgrading to a Pimax Crystal further down the road.

I love mine and have zero complaints.

It runs cool, and doesn’t work hard driving Ultra 4K @ 60Hz.

Also in VR?

Sorry I did not mention that specigically in my post. I have read very good things for the 7900xtx in MSFS in 2D but not so mich for VR…

I do not have VR.

DO NOT UPGRADE! The 7900XTX is a beast in 2D and worth its money. For VR it brings about the same performance as the 3080Ti I had before. For VR it makes absolutely no sense.
At the very moment - without optimized drivers for VR - you are better off with a 4080 which is about the same price.

Yeah, VR and AMD GPU’s are not a good match, unfortunately. I learned this over time with my 6800XT.

I mean it works, but if you are going to be chasing optimal performance, there are too many little things under the hood that AMD doesn’t do well.

Agree. The 6800XT was great in 2D with my 5800x3D, but a dog in VR with my G2, at least when trying to use Motion Reprojection. The video encoders which are used for MR were 2-3 times slower than a comparable nVidia 3080 and AMD hasn’t done much to improve them with the 7000 series compared to nVidia.

I grabbed a 4090 for VR in MSFS as soon as they came out and the difference was huge. The 4080 is almost as good and would be a much better choice for VR with the G2.

Watch this for an actual what its going to be like answer.

I chased MR for over a year on my 6800XT & G2. Constantly tweaking settings, constantly upgrading OXRTK and re-tweaking settings. After the last update of the tools I just finally stopped bothering.

When I play VR, I avoid all things MR now and have stopped chasing FPS.

I can get in the mid to high 30’s (maybe 40) using 90% resolution scaling and foveated rendering in DX12, and that’s where I stop now.

If they would just fix the DX12 airport texture bug, I’d probably consider it closed for me.

I have a 6800xt paired with a 5800x3d and pico4, VR is really good…
Of course there’s better options but that doesn’t mean this not good for VR

I can’t speak to the Pico, but the G2 and other WMR options are disadvantaged with AMD.

Just have a look at this thread:
https://community.amd.com/t5/graphics/7900xtx-low-performance-in-steamvr-and-vr-in-general/td-p/566750

Maybe better drivers get released in the future. At the moment 7000X cards are performing worse in VR than 6xxx cards.

Thanks a lot for all these statements! Looks like i have to go again with nvidia.

What about now with the recent driver update 23.7.1

Was there a significant fps improvement with recent driver update?

Hi guys, only a thought: Is there a different connecting VR glasses directly on the graphic cards or connecting on the PC?

Hi NickD…thanks for your quick response. That’s my thought’s: maybe you will have 2 ways to connect VR glasses. Both works on a “physical” way, but maybe one will cause troubles. Only a hint for desperate non-experts here

Hello lads. Just wanted OP and you all to know that this forumpost was cited by GPT for my own GPU investigation for my next GPU.

Thank you for your contributions making it easier for me to research GPU’s!

Oof, it used User Benchmark.

The very pinnacle of impartiality, not.
