@joeaudacious @RomanDesign Hey yall, just read through this entire thread. I’m considering taking the plunge and building a new pc and going from Valve index, Titan X Pascal, i7-6700k to a Varjo Aero (Or Crystal/BB) 4090, and trying to decide between the 7800x3d and 7950x3d. Would y’all still recommend the 7950x3d given all the challenges you have had? I like the idea of having all of my ancillary programs running on the non-3d cores (SpadNext, TDS, Pilot Client, Tobii, FlighEvents, etc) and have MSFS only running on the 3dv-cache cores. Is there a Mobo that you would recommend, or ones that I should avoid? Cheers!
I’m pretty happy with the experience I’m getting these days with the latest bios and chipset drivers, it seems much better than it was in the early days when it first came out.
High end VR is very taxing though because it is so many pixels.
I have the 7950x3d and I run similar external helper apps as you do.
I think with the latest bios I just left the core preference on auto and it seems to use the right cores for the right things.
Not for the price difference. The sim doesn’t utilize all the cores anyway, so there would be little to no difference going with the 7950x3d. Even if you do see a difference in the FPS counters, you would need to ask yourself if it’s worth the extra cost.
I went from a 5800x3d to 7950x3d ( Asus TUF x670, 3080ti, 32 gb Trident Z5 neo ddr5 6000mhz). Fresh install several times and yes all the newest bios/drivers blah blah. In VR running reverb g2 I would get the strangest stutters in MSFS. Cruising at 60-70 fps then just tank to 2 fps. Got worse after msfs patches. I play other vr games with no issue. I tried all the adjustments on the posts and nothing would stick and be stable. It has to be the switching of ccd’s. Thats my best guess at this point. Others say the same. Jay-z-2cent just removed his 7950x3d and went back to intel because of strange behavior that he could never find the cause. I got so tired of it I bought a 7800x3d to test. Everything else the same and stutters gone. CPU is probably just too niche right now. I have shelved it and will wait till they figure out drivers/ gamebar / memory speed incompatibility issues.
Glad you got it going! I ran into the same issues when I upgraded to the 7800X3D from the 13600k. I noticed you running the Varjo at 39PPD. I run at 35 and get a massive performance boost and still have the great visuals. I don’t use DLSS any more. I have the reprojection turned on at 45fps. I have to say I definitely prefer TAA at 35ppd vs the DLSS at 39 PPD.
I was so close to doing a build around the 7950X3D, as I saw some graphs and read a few (fastest CPU for MSFS) posts, but actually after ordering the build I started coming across several posts like this one, and YT videos highlighting some stability issues with the 7950X3D, and it’s incompatibility with some RAM, and almost all RAM above 6000 MT/s. As I am building a PC to run MSFS VR better with a new hi res HMD, the first red flag was the graph I saw that showed the 7950X3D far outperforming either the 12900 or 13900 in MSFS in 1080P and 1440P, but when it came to 4K, the older CPUs still outshined the 7950X3D. Then I came across this post, and several stating they couldn’t get smooth performance in VR using DCS World. While there may be workarounds to get it to work, and fixes are supposedly in the works between MS and AMD to smooth things out for end users, it just sounded like too much hassle, so I ended up changing my entire build back to Intel (14900k). While I’ve heard complaints about that CPU too, mostly around high power usage and heat, the biggest complaint seemed to be the lack of generational change between it and the 13900. Well considering they are pretty much the same price, and I am upgrading from a 9900k, I think the 14900 will suit me fine.
Why didn’t you switch to the 7800x3d?
Interesting, I’ve been using 7950x3D with RTX 4090 for months and I couldn’t be happier with the performance I have. Also running the sim in 4K, easily get +45 FPS in a dense areas like New York in Fenix or PMDG 737 etc. Also running everything ULTRA, except TLOD, LOD are 200.
Decided to stick to what I know, which is Intel.
I’ve been reading through this thread as I’ve just bought a very similar PC build (7950x3d.RTX4090/128Gb RAM) and I’m having similar issues as the OP with frame rates in MSFS.
I’m really struggling to find any sort of improvements at all regardless of settings. With the default ULTRA settings, I’m getting around 20fps flying over a busy airport like Heathrow, UK.
Maxxing out the sliders, or setting them to min has no noticable effect - maybe sways the counter by 5fps one way or the other at most.
But even if I switch to the default LOW settings, I only get around 25-30.
Trying somewhere practically deserted instead of a busy airport… and I get no improvement whatsoever.
I’m not sure what I’ve got set up wrong or how to improve things but it seems like it must be something pretty fundamental for the various settings to be having such a negligible effect.
Perhaps more confusing to me, is that I’m not noticing any issues in other games. I can quite happily max out everything in Cyberpunk 2077 for example and never drop under 60fps.
As resolution increases, the less difference you see between different CPU’s due to being GPU bound. It’s pretty strange to see things flip so much at 4k to use a term like “outshined.” I’d be curious to see that graph/review.
Have you turned on developer mode and used the Display FPS setting in it to view the in-sim fps counter? That will tell you where to start looking.
If you’re getting this on a top end system, it may likely be a hardware issue. Have you checked temps during a flight?
Is your Game Bar app up to date?
AMD chipset drivers too?
Motherboard Bios update?
I assume you have turned on the EXPO / DOCP / XMP (*delete as required) in the Bios?
Mutlithreading turned off?
It took me months to get my system to behave and it’s still probably not quite right but I can definitely hold a decent frame rate everywhere now. On a 4080 though.
Then I threw VR at it and going through the setting tweak dance again now!
The PC is a new build, less than a week old. I’m kinda assuming the drivers are up to date - not sure how to tell. Haven’t even figured how to get into BIOS yet - it doesn’t come up with the usual flash of text ‘press x to enter BIOS’
Have just ran a test again to check temps. Also have the FPS counter running. Strangely, having changed nothing, I did get improved frame rates.. but still nothing over 40fps, even at a remote airfield on low settings.
Temps all seem ok to me..
The screenshot is running on Ultra settings at Heathrow. I would have included other screens, but I can only embed one apparently.
You definitely need to get yourself into the Bios and switch on EXPO (Try II first). You may have a problem with 128gb though. Took me ages to get 64 stable. I am 99% certain this is your issue. New builds from a PC builder they do the BARE MINIMUM to get it loading, nothing more. It is not at all optimised for how it should work. I can tell you more but got to leave for a bit now - but don’t worry we will sort it out!
FWIW - I’ve also tried in VR as that’s my ultimate aim… I actually don’t lose any FPS. What I get in VR is what I get on the monitor - give or take less than 5 fps either way.
What motherboard is it? What brand / model of ram?
Go to the MS Store in Windows and make sure at least GameBar is up to date.
Game Bar is now installed. Can’t say I know what it actually is, never come across it before.
Motherboard is ROG Crosshair X670E Hero
Ram is Kingston Fury Beast 4x32Gb 6000Mhz DDR5
That monitor is going to be almost meaningless because it’s showing total CPU utilization. The sim runs primarily on only one thread, which can be maxed out while still showing low total utilization. That’s why you want to pay more attention to what the sim’s fps display shows. You are CPU limited.
Game bar is required for the 7950x3d to properly assign and park cores during gaming. Only half the cores have the 3d v-cache, and Game Bar let’s the drivers know you are gaming. If installing this didn’t improve numbers, you’ll want to go double check your drivers. New systems are rarely up to date, so go here and download the latest for your CPU.

It’s also worth going to MSI’s site and checking for motherboard drivers.
