9800x3d and 4090turf oc

Evening guys

So my new build should be here Saturday morning

I have a 9800x3d and a msi gforce 4090 turf gaming oc and I’ll be using a odyssey g8 34 ultra wide monitor

Before I spend hours maybe even days learning my way around stuff I’d like any info I can get from this forum

So will the 9800x3d and 4090 work perfectly out the box ? Or do I need to do anything to maximise performance ? I’ve read some places under vaulting can reduce temps but maintain performance ( looks very complicated )

With regards to the game 2024 I’m hoping I can put graphics onto max and maybe reduce other slides that won’t matter much like traffic down a tad etc. how much lod ? Also how much cache is everyone using ?

What about shaders ? Will there be shades I can use on the computer or will I have to use the reshade that also looks complicated as I’ve seen plenty posts saying the game looks white washed

Also if anyone has the g8 screen what’s it like for flight simulator 2024? Any recommend settings ? Also should I use the direct port cable that’s with the screen or get a mini hdmi as I’ve read the dp can displayed higher hz then a hdmi and the monitor also has hdr10 hdr10+ and game mode. What one would be best ?

In simple terms, your motherboard ‘decides’ how fast the CPU cores will run based on three things:

  • Voltage
  • Temperature
  • Clock speed (frequency)

To get higher speeds (boost frequency,) additional voltage is applied, and boost frequency will go up until thermal limits are approached. Undervolting allows the CPU to run at higher frequencies while generating less heat.

Basic undervolting is pretty simple, as long as you are comfortable going into your computer BIOS.

On my motherboard I searched for “PBO” and got options for ‘All-Core’ and ‘Per Core’ adjustment (called ‘offset’ - a negative offset is undervolting.) I did Per Core. It more granular, but does require a lot more work. A good starting point is a -20 all-core offset. This will help the CPU run faster without heating up too much (as long as you have adequate cooling. CPU’s themselves have built-in thermal protection - they won’t boost as high if temps go up too much, and will in fact shut down if a thermal limit is exceeded.

As for your 9800X3D, I’d just let it run in the sim, and use monitoring software like Open Hardware Monitor to keep an eye on temps and maximum frequency. If you’re seeing > 80°C and your CPU is never reaching its boost frequency of 5.2 GHz, then you should undervolt.

If you are seeing good boost frequencies, and your temps are more in the 70°C range, then I’d just leave it be.

As for the 4090, you shouldn’t do anything except install the latest 566.14 nVidia driver. You always want to use the DisplayPort connection if your monitor supports it.

As far a graphics settings go…Set it to the Ultra preset and fly. Adjust settings as needed to ensure a smooth experience.

Open Developer Mode in the game, select DeBug → Display FPS from the menu at the top, and check your performance. I like to see “Limited By” constantly flipping back and forth between ‘Main Thread’ and ‘GPU.’

Some settings (like Terrain Level Of Detail and Traffic settings) have a big influence on the CPU, while others (especially antialiasing - TAA, DLSS DLAA, Quality, or Balanced) affect the GPU. If you’re happy on the Ultra preset, roll with it. Don’t chase FPS. I personally am quite happy if I see a steady and stutter-free 40-45 FPS.

I have a 79050X3D and a 3090 Ti. In a simple aircraft (Bonanza) over difficult terrain (NYC) I’m getting a smooth 55 FPS with the Ultra preset, TLOD=200, OLOD=200, AI Traffic=HIGH, and DLSS Quality.

You should see similar numbers, but keep in mind I did some extensive per core tuning, and I use Process Lasso to fine tune my CPU usage even further.
Process Lasso is (in my opinion) a MUST for the 7950X3D, but not at all necessary for the 9800X3D.

Other things you should do:

  • Windows Game Mode = ON
  • Xbox GameBar = ENABLED
  • Power Profile = BALANCED

More esoteric things that are a bit harder to do:

  • Ensure RBAR is enabled in BIOS and active

You can research how to do those things if you don’t know how.

I have a 100GB Rolling Cache in a custom location on my fastest drive.
I have plenty of space left, so I may increase it. I’m not yet sure whether the sim can use that much, or even how it uses it in FS24. I know in FS20 a much smaller cache was fine, but with the streaming model, I’m guessing it can use much more.

In addition to @BegottenPoet228 excellent advise above, I recommend that you turn on game mode on your monitor and turn on HDR10 in the sim (you can use both at the same time). The sim doesn’t support HDR10+.

I have the msi mpg 870e carbon motherboard If I remember correctly

Would you say that under vaulting would probably be a good idea ? I’ve got say a week to learn it I guess and Aslong as you can reset it I guess I’ll be fine ? I did read somewhere about the -20 bur would this apply to all ? My full specs are

9800x3d

Asus rog strix x870f or the msi mpg x870 e carbon as it’s only 30 more

Corsair Vengeance Grey 64GB 6000MHz AMD EXPO DDR5 or Corsair DOMINATOR Titanium RGB Grey 64GB 6000MHz AMD EXPO DDR5 - I think they go with both cards if someone could confirm

ASUS NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB TUF Gaming OG OC

I’m hoping I won’t need to use the boost function on the chip to be honest

I shall download that software you linked and give it ago to check the temps during gaming, are you able to toggle it on and off ?

My screen actually came with a dp but I’ve been reading it might have issues so been looking at a mini hdmi 2.1a cable but the issues should be resolved with the screen not waking up from sleep, would it be worth upgrading the mini dp cable to a better one? Of out of the box will be enough ? Would a hdmi do the same job or should I stick with the dp cable ?

Do you still need to get the drivers direct from there websites or does windows 11 do it all now ? Been years since

I’vused a pc

I’m not really into seeking 150fps etc I’ll prob limit it as I’ve read the 4090 can whine badly and setting a limit can almost make it silent so I’ll prob cap that around 50/60

I’ll take a look into them settings once I get the pc

What is Xbox game bar and windows bar etc ? I think I know that the windows one closes things you don’t need etc right ?

Sorry to bug yous all but I just want to get as much info into one place as I can

Thanks for your reply

You want the CPU to run as fast as it can. Name it ‘Forrest’ if you want.
Don’t worry about wearing it out. Heat is the enemy, and you can manage heat with proper cooling and undervolting - if you need it. That’s why I said to just run it and see what your temps look like under load. If they’re around 70° then just roll with it. Otherwise, do a -20 all-core undervolt.

Stick with the DP cable.

The monitor software can always be minimized, but I like to have its gadget showing at all times. You can select the metrics you want to see, size it and position it anywhere on the Windows desktop. Like this. I monitor CPU temp, GPU temp, and GPU load.

I download my graphics card drivers from nVidia. I don’t use Windows for that.

Search Windows for the Xbox GameBar and Windows Game Mode. Google it if you have problems with that.

You want those on - especially Windows Game Mode, which allows Windows to recognize that you’re running game software, and optimize its activity for that game. It does this automatically - when it’s enabled.

RAM needs to be on the motherboard QVL (Qualified Vendor List.)
I’m happy to research that part for you. I’ll get back to you on that.
Hopefully both RAM kits you’re looking at are 2x32GB, and not 4x16GB.
Most helpful would be an actual part number, like this:

64GB G.Skill DDR5 Trident Z5 RGB 6400MHz CL32 1.40V Dual Channel Kit (2 X 32GB) Black
Model Number F5-6400J3239G32GX2-TZ5RK

Is the 9800x3d the best for 2024 ?

Currently the GPU in 2024 is barely utilized, so it you will have hoorrible frame rates even with the 4090. Second. This game cares about multithreading and cores, not cache, so your X3D won’t do anything to improve the game experience compared to a non X3D

For this game the X3D chips do nothing, the game doesnt care about cache, it cares about CPU cores

So maybe we should go with 9900x or 14700k ?
Or will they improve the sim for x3d ?

I don’t have links handy right now but there are reviews on YouTube with the 9800X3D trouncing Intel 14th gen in MSFS2024.

Thanks for that mate I’ll get them downloaded once they come and take a look at them

My ram that I choose is

2x32GB CORS VENG 6000 C30 CMH64GX5M2B6000C30

scan said it was on the list so it best be the mother board is a msi mpg 870e carbon and I’ve just realised it doesn’t have a dp port it has a usbc dp port so either I want a new cable or a splitter. Do you think a new usbc to dp cable would be better then splitting them ?

Can’t wait to get going properly on a proper machine. Xbox ran ok on 2020 but lacked a awful lot

I really hope this chip will be utilized as I’ve waited for stock into the uk to get it. Guessing Aslong as it runs on ultra it won’t matter. Be Sod’s Law I get the new best thing and it’s already not the best for the game

I’m a complete newbie re building computers and noticed that this looks like a question I had asked on another thread. The answer being that if you need a display port, you’d be connecting to one on the video card, not the mother board.

Hope that helps.

I have 7800x3d with 4080 super, 64gb ram and not happy with 24 getting at ultra and even high preset some main thread spikes on big citys etc

Thanks for that I didn’t even think of that, brain fog moment

I’m hoping it being so new some things need ironed out hopefully in the coming months

I think either way it’ll still be 100000000% better then Xbox I can’t even get my home airport on there where as pc Orbx do a version of it.

I’m also hoping I can cope with the slight downgrade from 4k oled tv to a 1440 oled but who’s to say the graphics on Xbox were actually true 4k as it took ages to get it smooth

That exact part number is not on the motherboard QVL. But I think you’ll be OK.

The closest I found on the list is: CMP64GX5M2B6000C30

According to Corsair, third letter is the Product Family. That’s the only difference I can find.
‘H’ is Vengeance
‘P’ is Dominator

They’re so similar (same 1.4V and module configuration) it may mean they just didn’t test your specific RAM. Dominator has better built-in cooling features (thus it’s more expensive) but Vengeance RAM has a good reputation.
I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

100fps in 4k on a 5950x in 4k ultra dlaa w/ 8k shadows… i wanna get me one of those “msi turf gaming” gpus tho XD

Thanks for that. I think I made a typo to and I belive it’s CMK64GX5M2B6000C30

Same number but it’s k and I can’t find that either. I’ve emailed them but I’d assume they’ll know if it’s time and as irs the same basically you might be right

I’ll see what they say when I enquired they had a huge list and went through it

Looks decent.

I’m hoping it’s worth the money as the misses wasn’t too happy when she found out :rofl:
