Question on sim physics. Would a 9 kts tailwind be strong enough to prevent me from backing up in general aviation parking using reverse thrusters in a tbm 930? Had this issue today, wondering if that would be accurate in real life. I tried backing up and the plane didn’t budge, moved forward and turned the plane, then the plane would back up using the thrusters at a crosswind. Anyone else have this problem?
Using TBM930 Reverse as push back is not standard procedure
is your P Brake on?
Setting aside the fact that you should not use reverse thrust on a tricycle-gear turboprop like the TBM930 to reverse, and assuming you are on tarmac, with a clean aircraft and standard weight, yes the thrust produced should be sufficient to overcome a 9knt tailwind.
Be aware that if you have the nose wheel deflected before you start to move, this will create extra friction and may prevent the aircraft from moving. Allow the aircraft to gain some forward/aft speed before applying any steering.
But it’s not a great procedure to adopt. The reverse thrust is to help reduce the landing roll. not ground manoeuvre as the risk of a tail strike is very high.
If you just need to back up, Hit Shift-P. Even if there’s not a tug / tractor, it will act as if there is one and push you straight back. Hit Shift-P again to stop.
Parking brake is off, what is a nose wheel? I will try the Shift-P, since reverse thrust for pushback is not standard procedure. So my question would be, in real life would you keep a tbm 930 at an unconrolled airport with no ground services, and just try to park it properly? Or would you keep it at a controlled airport with ground services that can do a pushback?
Yet another Pro Tip Thank you!
2-3 people could easily push a TBM by hand, or you could just use this:
I’ve seen a T-38 pushed by hand, and their empty weight isn’t far from the TBM’s max.
I saw 4K/8K and thought it was a Sim add on… texture resolutions🤣
So I guess the real life scenario would be, if you owned a $4 million plane, to rent a hangar from a municipal airport and then buy the AircraftCaddy and keep it inside the hangar for your personal use? Is that correct? So using Shift + P would not deviate from an authentic sim experience?
So I found a video on YouTube earlier where an IRL owner hints that he uses reverse thrust in his TBM for backing up out of tight spots on the ground. But I posted it to the wrong thread!
If you can afford the $4M aircraft, you could probably buy a share of a private airport, then own the rights to a hangar for life. And then, yes, buy the caddy and keep it in your hangar.
