I last used VR probably the first year that MSFS was released, it blew me away, it was amazing. Haven’t touched it since then.
I have an Oculus Rift S, Asus Rog Strix 3090 OC, AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, 64GB RAM, NVMe (basically this rig was built for MSFS about a year ago).
Can I get an honest opinion of what it is like now/ surely it is better than back then?
Has anyone got similar specs to me and can give me an idea if its worth playing in this mode again and also a rough idea of what detail level you run for a nice experience?
Would appreciate your thoughts, I don’t really know what detail level to use if its worth it.
I suppose my VR headset could do with upgrading, I kept it because it was still pretty good, but maybe it has been far surpassed now.
I don’t have your HMD or PC specs so can only comment on the VR experience over time;
SU5 reduced the visuals, especially in Cloud Rendering. Generally this has got better over time since this release but it’s not at the levels it used to be (IMO)
SU7 broke mouse control with the in flight windows when using button binds, a patch thereafter and subsequent Sim Updates have only partially fixed this major issue for input devices not button binds, Asobo have not done enough with this regression (IMO)
There’s only been Two features added of any note; VR controllers and World Scale (latter in SU10 beta currently), this isn’t good enough (again IMO!), World Scale should’ve been one of the first new features not something added over 18 months later. Not everyone uses VR controllers either, in a Poll elsewhere it was shown to be scarcely used. Many other “simple” Wish List items have gone ignored.
The OpenXR Toolkit is a Game Changer, look it up here in the forums, adds a bunch of features the help massively with Performance and quite frankly stuff that should be in the default Sim.
Overall VR has been generally ignored for the most part, proof in the lack of regression fixes, lack of new features, lack of attention to minor details that are available in every other simulation that supports VR. But having said that it’s still an incredible experience at times, DLSS (again currently in SU10 beta) will help in performance for some, if you get general graphical settings just right it’s a pleasure to fly with - I just wish it got more attention from the Devs who, in my opinion, don’t show much interest in this technology currently, which is a shame.
Sorry that came across a bit moany it’s not all bad, get the right conditions in the right plane and the right location and this Sim is incredible in VR, I’ve had many great moments.
Thanks guys, told me everything that I need to know! Not moany at all @anon27120256 nothing wrong with constructive criticism. I really appreciate all the info there. Doesn’t sound like its had much attention, like you say, but I will definately check out OpenXR Toolkit!
@tykey6 what is the better headset now, is it the G2? is it ALOT better than my Rift S?
I’ve had both, I wouldn’t say it’s ALOT better. It is better, the S is 1280 x 1440 whereas the G2 is 2160 x 2160 so you have greater clarity.
If I was buying a reasonably priced hmd today I would consider the Quest 2, the HP Reverb G2, or possibly the Pico Neo 4 which is rumoured to be releasing quite soon.
i had the g2 = great clarity and good workflow with the openxr toolkit
but it dies and now im using the pico neo 3 link, wich is also a great vr experience, its 200$ cheaper as the g2 and the picture quality is near to the g2 with a better edge to edge clarity, round about 95-98% of the g2 clarity
I have a system that is quite similar - x570 mobo, AMD 5950x, 3080ti, 32GB RAM. I use the HP G2.
When I originally bought the G2 (about a year ago), it had so much trouble with stability in msfs. I suffered thru this for many months, and I even attributed to the instability with msfs. However I also kept reading that the G2 had issues with the x570 motherboards. Finally a few weeks ago, I got so frustrated and dug into the reasons. It turns out the mobo’s usb-c connection was not providing the G2 enough voltage. Once I updated the mobo’s BIOS, the issues were gone! The G2 is solid as a rock now and works wonderfully. I got SU10 Beta, and the VR experience is unbelievably smooth - very few stutters, super smooth. Moving my head around is so so smooth that i forget I am inside a game; G2’s resolution is just enough to fool you, the “small” sweet spot is not an issue at all really. Would I like more resolution, yes. Would I like a bigger sweet spot, sure. BUT the G2 is well above the threshold of acceptance for me. It makes me forget about whining about this and that and immerse myself into the virtual world. DLSS makes a big difference. The dials can be a bit soft, but I hear they are working on that.
Eventually I will be looking at something like Varjo Aero or something better (OLED w/HDR would be something ) but I am in the heavens right now with my current setup. Make sure to get the SU10 Beta (it is going final in a couple of weeks), it makes a HUGE difference to your VR experience. Good luck!
A couple of months ago I’d have said not very good on my G2, but with the Openxr toolkit and SU10 beta, performance this last week has been the best ever for me.
Able to run 100% res with dlss quality and totally smooth with mr on, dropping to 23fps only in the worst weather conditions while flying low and still smooth 99% of the time.
I’m gobsmacked tbh.
I have also Pico Neo 3 Link, and I am happy with this headset (looking forward to the release of Pico 4). I have never used OpenXR Toolkit, and somebody told me that I should use OpenVR instead. So…, shoul I download OpenXR or OpenVR?
I am still with SU9, and also with expectations for the upcoming SU10. For the moment I only fly VR from time to time, because my fps is not as good as I would desire. I have RTX 2080 and Ryzen 7 5800x CPU
