A20N – does RNAV approach only work at CERTAIN airports?

Hi!

Could you tell me if I am doing something wrong or if this is a bug? I am trying to land the A320neo at Kathmandu Airport (VNKT) on RNAV 02 Z, but the plane does not descend to the runway when I press “appr” on the autopilot panel.

However, doing an RNAV approach at other airports, for example NLWW, works flawlessly – the magenta rectangle guided me safely to the runway’s threshold. Why does the A320neo never descend to VNKT when I press “appr”, but it works absolutely fine in NLWW?

I am on the Xbox, dev mode is off and I haven’t got any 3rd party addons for the A320neo.

This is what I have done, both in VNKT and NLWW:

  • selected RNAV 02 Z approach on MCDU
  • set QNH according to data from ATC
  • reduced speed to 200kt
  • activated approach mode on MCDU
  • set selected altitude mode to the constraint of the last waypoint
  • followed vertical and horizontal glide slope (autopilot does so nicely) while gradually slowing to 155kt (flaps 3)
  • gear down, speed brakes armed, auto brakes on
  • activated “appr” on the autopilot panel seconds before reaching the last waypoint

Why does the aircraft fly over the runway at some 900ft in VNKT, while aiming for the runway perfectly in NLWW?

Thank you!

Guess the stock A320 can’t do VNAV correctly, but not quiet sure, because I never used it. Guess I read it here somewhere.

Well, what’s bugging me is that it can do VNAV. Why only at some airports though?

Severamente bugs in most of the aircraft. 23, May. Unfortunately.

I don’t think it is bug. Might be related to having different levels of detail in the approach data for different airports. Noticed this with a bunch of different aircraft — not just the A20N

I suspect/hope there are some actual pilot types up here who might be able to explain it.

I’ve got exactly the same feeling! The misbehaving RNAV approaches are driving me crazy and it’s not just A320neo that’s problematic. I now avoid RNAV approaches altogether which is a huge shame.

Any experienced pilots/simmers who might shed light on this?
