A2A Comanche 250 is on its way! (Released! July 2023)

Did they release any videos (or blog) about the flight model details? Is it just a giant lookup table specialised for this aircraft or something more complex?

I didn’t buy this addon exactly because it runs as an external program. I don’t trust random exe’s doing the right thing with my computer. Plus any future improvements in the sim will have “zero” effect on this plane. I know I’m missing out and I believe more experienced pilots that it feels more natural to how the real plane behaves. Still, I want addon that work within this simulator.

Anyway, I’m very interested in what is actually calculated regarding the systems and flight model. How do they calculate wear in the engine? With the built-in debug tools we can get some insights into MSFS’s FM which I find intriguing.

Been flying it for quite a bit now and I must say it’s incredible. Sure the S-TEC System 30 is pretty basic but hand-flying it is very, very enjoyable. Currently flying at night and I love the cockpit lighting. I missed flying A2A aircraft so much and I’m glad I’m back at it in a next generation sim. For those that are a fan of general aviation this aircraft is hands down absolutely worth it.

I think A2A’s implementation of Logitech panels in the cockpit is a shocking omission.

And it gives hope for their Piper Cub to arrive eventually.

Let’s hope they’ll bring that in a later update.

Well, to be fair, future improvements from MS will have no affect on this plane because this plane already has them. I can’t think of anything that this plane needs that MS could provide. You are certainly missing out.

I’m loving the plane, but struggling to understand the engine management.

I was flying out of SFO last night. Warm and quite bumpy, but cooling became somewhat of an issue, and trying to keep on top of the engine management feels like spining plates sometimes.

I was at cruise, 2100rpm, MP 20, leaned to just rich of peak EGT, and sat there for 20 ish minutes. Engine analyzer was green, CHT was fine for all cylinders, although the aft two were hot-ish, as expected in OAT of 25C at 8000ft.
As I chugged along I noticed engine RPM started fluctuating. I didn’t hear the rpm change, just saw it on the rpm gauge. I added a little fuel, and the rpm evened out.
Can anyone explain what I did wrong, and why I didn’t notice it in the engine sound?

I need to RTFM on the engine management, but it was just a bit weird, as I find the engine noise incredibly expressive in this plane, where you can hear minute details and changes to the engine management, loads and such.

Immersion means different things to different people. Where possible, I try to use physical controls for everything, and I guess by definition a mouse is a physical control, but to clarify I would prefer it to be some physical switch, lever, or knob/rotary I am interacting with to do something.

I have mine set up now so that the only time I have to touch the mouse is if I have the GPS enabled, and want to navigate its menus. If I had one of those 530/430 bezels, and didn’t get the frame rate impact we currently have (on some systems), then I probably wouldn’t even need the mouse then.

Actually I found that some of it does sort of kinda work, at least some functions, so it doesn’t all have to be done with the mouse in the VC.

  1. AP engage button on Honeycomb Yoke powers it on (you get the lights in the turn co-ordinator)
  2. The AP button on Logitech cycles the modes. If you cycle to HDG mode then…
  3. …with the selector on Logitech on HDG Mode, the main rotary then moves the bug round the HSI. Which then sets your aircraft heading to that.
  4. The red button on the Honeycomb then disconnects the AP

I’ve not found any other modes that work yet (ALT?) but TBH I didn’t try. HDG is good enough for me - I don’t want AP on this plane anyway but a simple HDG is useful sometimes. Might be you have to press the HDG button on Logitech now I think of it (I am not on PC now).

The only thing is (and I know it’s correct, I just need to learn how HSI works properly) the heading number on the Logitech isn’t directly tied to the actual compass heading. Unless you use the right knob on the HSI (pull it out first) and turn the pointer to match your current direction, and then turn the left knob (all with mouse I think!) to match up to it. I am probably describing that wrong but basically match your actual heading with the HSI correction first and you can get the Logitech value to agree a bit closer. Or just ignore the Logitech readout and only use the rotary to adjust relative direction - just move the bug. Works for me.

That might have been carb ice. Did you notice a change in MP at all?

The AP connect/disconnect button on my yoke cycles through the non-ALT AP modes. Couple that with my Logitech multipanel, and I have full control over it. I an even do OBS modes this way. Once OBS mode is enabled, there is a check on the panel to see if OBS mode is enabled, and if so the CRS know now adjusts the OBS mode, which is really helpful on occasion.

I haven’t looked at ALT mode either, other than clicking it with the mouse. When I tried it I don’t think it did a stellar job of holding altitude, if the VSI was anything to go by, but HDG & TRK were fine.

Pop it out and drag it to a tablet with a touch overlay for the controls. Works real nice.

Did you get much of a frame rate impact? That’s one of things I’m hoping 2024 may address, even if indirectly by performance improvements elsewhere.

I’m glad to see your auto-spell-correct also thinks the word “knob” doesn’t exist. How rude

I will dig into it more next time I am on, but was surprised some of it does work - just not in the usual way which threw me the first time I tried. Can’t expect it all to work the same, as it’s NOT simulating a full and normal AP system anyway.

I think DX12 works better in this regard but it’s not stable for everyone yet. Again that should be something 2024 improves on.

everything can be used without the mouse look at the program you have to have installed on your pc when you installed the comanche.

No change in MP, the OAT was mid 20 celcius and no clouds. Adding fuel helped right away, so I’m pretty sure it was running too lean, but it looked happy from everywhere I could see. I just need to find where to look.

I have one of the JF Pipers and all the BS AC except the Caravan and, yes, they are very good imo.

The A2A Comanche, however, is for me a step above them all. It’s difficult to define why but it just feels more real. It’s the nearest I have got to so far (since the sim launched) to the feeling that I am flying a real AC. There are a few niggles atm but nothing for me which is a deal breaker and hopefully most of these niggles will soon be sorted.

Just curious, I don’t have any Honeycomb equipment but maybe will in the future.

Are there default bindings when using a Honeycomb control? If yes, is it possible to get rid of and use it as any other USB device?

Well, it just sees all the switches and axis as a ID’d controls, so you can reassign anything you want if that’s what you mean. It’s not locked down by drivers (there is no special profile software needed) like the Logitech units are without using Spad etc.
