Acceptable download rate only via VPN?

For a few months now I can only download contents in Flight Simulator only if I use Proton VPN. Otherwise the rate is as slow as 2-3 Mbits/s or even less. This affects all downloads within MSFS, but not anything outside the sim. This problem didn’t exist in 2020 when I first installed the sim.

Can anybody explain to me (technically) what is happening here? I have to pay a monthly fee for the vpn. Isthere a way to avoid that?

I live in Germany and have a 250 Mbit/s glass fibre connection.

Thanks!

Nope.

Nope? No way to avoid that?

Nope mate :frowning:

I am in the US and can only get acceptable download rates utilizing Proton VPN as well. It boils down to how your ISP routes you to MS servers. You get on the right Proton server you will have a route with little latency and fewer hops a greatly increased speed. It also makes huge difference with terrain and texture downloading when in the sim. I usually run the sim anymore with the VPN active because of this.

So I have to “bite the sour apple”, as we say in Germany, and try to find my perfect server. Thank you.

Unfortunately, your ISP may also be actively throttling connections to certain servers, i.e. Microsoft gaming servers.
