This isn’t a “my rig is so great” post or anything like that, people got far better rigs afterall. It’s just, i’m so happy. It’s been 2 years of COUNTLESS hours of tinkering and tweaking and waiting for updates and more tinkering…, but today it finally happened. I ran MSFS over my hometown (small-ish town) at 3200x3200 resolution per eye with all details set to ultra, or maximum possible. Even terrain LOD at 400. DLSS at quality setting…and it was just completely smoooooth. I’m just completely blown away by how this looks, finally. I do fly with motion reprojection, i should add. But…finally, the sky is truly calling.
G2, i7-9700k, 3080ti.
Best of luck to you all. Thanks to Asobo, Toolkit team, everybody in the community who came up with great tweaks and ideas and my wife for putting up with this hobby lol
I’m glad the sim is improving but I hoped that with my 3800ti and DLSS I could have at least 75fps without motion reprojection. At the moment, I would call this the minimum to enjoy the experience. Looking forward more optimization for dx11 and, above all, dx12 from Asobo and Microsoft.
Hi. There wasn’t this one change in particular that made all the difference, but the whole evolution. First of all, until a week ago i was using an rtx 2070 and a 1st gen Dell Visor headset. Now i finally could afford a G2 and 3080ti. Ofcourse this in itself is a giant leap, though i have to say the G2 in MSFS is not really all that better than the old Dell visor. I seriously did all i could to squeeze everything i could out of my previous hardware and already had a smooth experience lately. Of course, the really giant leap was the introduction of Oxr Toolkit, and now SU10 and DLSS. SU10 really did a lot for me personally, even though i see a ton of complaints about performance from others. Of course the 3080ti is what made the biggest difference, though a year ago it wouldn’t have helped that much in by itself. The biggest compromise here is of course motion reprojection. Some may not like it, i can tolerate its downsides though. I can’t enjoy the sim without MR.
I agree with you partially. If you can’t stand MR then of course the sim isn’t quite there for you then. I am one of those that can’t play without MR enabled so that’s why i’m ok with everything. I would of course prefer to shoot straight to 90fps but i think that won’t happen for a VERY long time unfortunatelly. Though from my testing, you don’t really need 75 fps since FS is doing a sort of motion smoothing even without MR enabled exlipicitelly in the OpenXR Tool. From my SU10 testing since i got 3080ti, i have concluded that if you could stay above 45fps that would be acceptable and smooth enough to play without MR. I have to reduce the resolution more than i would like to maintain 45 fps though, so i’d rather have a really high resolution and tolerate MR with its artefacts.
I’m much more bothered with win11 WMR issues (overly sensitive head tracking). That is the last issue that’s causing me any sort of anoyance at all, but that’s not really Asobo’s fault. I’m hoping 22h2 solves it. I’ll wait until september when microsoft rolls out its update, but if it doesn’t help i’m going back to win10.
you mean ingame settings? Everything on ultra, DLSS on quality, Terrain LOD on 200 (got messed up in latest beta a bit) and 100% render scale, 100% oxr, 100% FSR. I don’t however fly really big cities. I tried London and it worked just fine though. Just dropped clouds to high.
Thanks, interesting, I am having a hard time getting even close to perfection and smoothness, especially in VR…. Running between 25-30 fps at best, most settings on high, TLOD 100, render 100, OLOD 100, …. Plus I have 64GB RAM…. So I’m doing something wrong….
Are you running with motion reprojection enabled? Dunno what it’s called on quest, spacewarp or something? Because i only fly with reprojection. I’m sorry though, i have zero experience with the Quest, so it would be very hard to point you in the right direction regarding performance. Are you using OpenXR Toolkit? I don’t know what the benefits of the toolkit are on Quest, but with WMR they’re very substantial.
Sounds great! I’m happy you’ve achieved something approaching nirvana
I have a very similar rig (9900k/3080Ti/G2) but I wouldn’t call my experience perfect yet. I’m on SU10 beta and have dialled in some good settings, which I’m pretty happy with, but I’m fairly certain my resolution is a good deal lower than yours (90 render scale, 90 OXR dev tools) and I certainly don’t have everything on Ultra!
Are you using DX12 or DX11?
I use MR too, but end up with it at 22.5fps because I can’t even achieve 30 with MR on, let alone 45.
Are you overriding (custom) the OpenXR resolution in the developer tools, or leaving at default?
If you’re using DX12, then you can’t be using FFR in the toolkit, so what do you have set up there (in the toolkit)?
Sorry for all the questions - we’re all trying to reach our happy place with this sim and it’s impossible not to ask when you see a post like this!
Hey friend. Very sorry to hear. Definitely should have better results. I’m on dx11 ofcourse, dx12 is not usable as far as i’m concerned and i sure am not willing to part ways with FFR (i had a custom profile, now i just use the quality/wide preset. I used to use override resolution, but i find even that unnecessary atm, so i just use 100% across the board (oxr, ingame, fsr). Not exactly sure what’s holding you back so much. I am mostly holding on to 30fps repro with occasional drops to 22.5 and that’s with literally every ingame setting set to ultra, except terrain LOD on 200 and DLSS at quality. I wish i could help you more, but as you know there’s a lot of things which might be interfering with your performance. I won’t insult you by asking you if you have HAGS turned off in windows, etc. I am willing to answer a billion questions if i can help you anyhow. There’s one thing you could try though. I am regularly using the google maps mod. In rare occasions when i tried it with the default bing maps i noticed i actually get worse performance with bing maps. Not sure if you’re using the mod or not, but i’d suggest using it in any case since it’s literally a game changer.
I’m super new to VR (just got my headset today) and still battling mostly with the stuttering while turning my head. What do you mean by saying “playing with MR disabled”?
Hey buddy. MR is motion reprojection. Try to find guides on the forum on how to set everything up, they are very extensive and will give you good tips to improve your performance.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.
So, just to confirm, the OXR dev tools has “custom” checked, but set to 100%?
And when you say 100% FSR, is that the in-game AMD sharpening, or the OXR toolkit FSR scaling?
Maybe I’ll try DLSS again - I’ve reverted to TAA, because the smudging on the glass cockpit displays was offputting.
I’ve got the map mod but haven’t really used it yet, so I’ll give that a go. My Internet connection isn’t great unfortunately, so I think when I used it I could see large areas where textures weren’t loaded properly.
But hey, always willing to experiment further - what would sim-life be without some tweaking?
No, no, not sharpening. Oxr “custom” at 100%. Fsr resolution in toolkit at 100% and ingame dlss at 100 as well (i don’t think you can even change render scale atm anyway). As far as sharpening goes, that is subjective as per individual’s taste and it doesn’t have any real influence on performance either. Personally i have msfs’s sharpening set to enabled in the game’s cfg file, amd fsr think i have currently at …not really sure, maybe 100…and in the toolkit i have fsr sharpening at 40%.btw, if you have a slow net, that could be pretty big reason to cause you problems. I am not sure because i have a 500mbit connection, but i’m guessing anything below like 150mbit could be problematic. The tweaking yes…i get headaches from it lol. I spent hundreds of hours tweaking msfs in the past two years, don’t get me started llol. Not that the 3080ti will end the tweaking but at least i’m now 90% flying and 10% tweaking, where until now it was the other way around lol.
Good to hear you are happy. Coming from your old hardware it must be mindblowing for shure.
Unfortunately for me DLSS didn’t fulfill my expectations. It is smooth and give me an roundabout 50% fps boost (at quality, 11900k, 3090, G2, RR100, OXR100, medium to ultra settings) but the glass cockpits in my most used aircraft TBM930 are so unpleasant blurred that I step back to TAA and my crisp displays.
I admit that of course it depends a lot on my personal requirements.
Maybe an dedicated driver from nvidia can do the hoped magic.
Enjoy your new experience anyway, its night and day compared to what you have seen with your old hardware.
You’d be surprised at the level of clarity i was able to achieve on my 1st gen wmr headset and rtx 2070 as far as g2 is concerned i was a bit disappointed that it didn’t bring me a bigger difference. it’s not really that big of an increase in clarity for me now as it is in terms that i can use ingame settings i really couldn’t afford earlier (like reflections, ambient occlusion etc) and of course generally less performance issues. Btw what headset are you using? There"s this trick you can try for an increase in clarity if you’ve got g2 or other wmr. Try setting the headset setting in mixed reality portal to “optimize for performance”. There’s a bug that causes it to introduce a smaller fov but doesn’t lower resolution proportionatelly, so you fit same amount of pixels in a smaller fov which brings a much clearer image. Ofcourse you will have a smaller fov which is a downside but i could almost get used to that because it brings such an increase in clarity. You can also use the toolkit to lower fov size but in my experience it doesn’t work as well as the mixed reality portal bug. Cheers
Hey. Thanks for the info.
I did briefly try your settings and actually it was better than I thought it would be given I ramped everything up to max!
I’m still getting MR at 22.5fps and frame rate does dip below that at times too.
Do you use live weather or just a preset most of the time?
What about HT on the CPU?
If I can even get 22.5MR to remain consistent I’d be super happy with these settings!
