Adaptive Terrain Level-Of-Details

I would love for Asobo to implement a checkbox “Adaptive Terrain Level-Of-Details” and a slider “Minimum Terrain Level-Of-Details”.

When the adaptive TLOD box is ticked, the sim would adjust the TLOD based on mainthread usage (distance to CPU limit) anywhere from the Minimum TLOD to the main TLOD slider value.

This aids in alleviating low FPS in these situations:

  • on the ground of CPU-hungry 3rd party airports where the player cannot see very far anyway
  • in thick cloud layers that demand CPU yet the player can barely see past the clouds anyway
  • plane-spotting at a busy airport with lots of AI planes eating CPU yet the player’s focus is on the planes not the terrain in the distance

It will also help achieve optimal visual fidelity at higher altitudes where TLOD can be safely raised way beyond the usual slider setting.

TLOD changes would only affect future data loads so that there is no stuttering during changes.

Please also add the display of the current adaptive TLOD level to the developer mode FPS display.
