In real life the winch operators communicate with the pilot how he should move the helicopter to the target.
Add a hover circle in the tablet so the pilot knows where to place the helicopter relative to the target.
When doing the hoist endorsement test there was a circle on the map in the tablet but I haven’t seen it in the missions.
We shouldn’t be forced to use outside view to complete the mission
DCS handles Hook positioning with a special window with a + and a dot and some audio information.
When helicopter assitances are disabled, it’s quite tricky to maintain a nice hover at the correct height, and switching to external view is not practical att all / wanted.
doing the qualification i was hovering with no input on what was going on. Was i at the correct spot / too low / etc …
Audio guidance and more communication from the Hoist operator would be a very welcomed [ mandatory ] addition to make these mission doable /interesting to play.
Since the Wishlist topic “Optional Target UI […]” is kinda dead, i’ll repeat my idea here as well:
I suggest this:
An assistance system representing the work of a winch operator is incorporated, both for hoists and sling missions.
Once these conditions are met, the system becomes active:
Target is in a 15 meter radius around the helicopter
Helicopter is moving with less than 20 kts in any direction
Helicopter is less than 200 ft above the target
here are two options:
→ Audio System:
The Sim gives audio feedback as the “winch operator” referencing the helicopters relative position to the target. Callouts could be:
“Target X o’clock, Y meters forward, Z meters left, altitude good”
“On Target, up/down X meters”
“On Target, altitude good”

→ GUI System in the EFB
Graphical system showing a circle of 15 meter radius around the helicopter. A concentric circle every 5 meters inside for orientation. Orientation is Heading Up always. The Helicopter is represented as a symbol to scale and always centered.
The target is represented by a dot of 1-2 meter diameter.
Helicopter altitude is represented by a slider on a bar to the side of the circle UI.
The optimal altitude is represented as a green area in said bar.
In addition, i have noticed that both the winch operator and the resuce operator seem to lack training. The winch operator does not adjust the winch, they only know full down or full up. This leads to another issue:
The rescue operator seems as though they need rescuing as well, as, once they reach the ground, they just lie down without any motivation to move.
While this is very entertaining to watch, it also makes the missions a fair amount harder. I’d love if the winch controls on the cyclic would allow the player to adjust wich lenght in a sensible range, even though i am not sure that this is possible IRL.
I agree with all you say. I watched many real hoist and the winch operator communicates with the pilot the whole time. What I understand dcs uses the circle and dot thing you showed.
But I honest don’t want any more guidence in sling operations. In real sling loading they don’t communicate as much with the ground crew. They use the window in the floor.
It is very hard to use because it’s hard to keep the helicopter in stable hover when looking down.
