Advice on HW - i5-12400F/RTX-4060 combo

I am in the process of choosing parts to build a dedicated PC for playing MSFS with Quest 3 VR headset. Certain budget constraint apply as always  but I am open to the slight alternations.

What I am targeting on is i5-12400F CPU (6 cores with hyperthreading) RTX4060GPU, 32G DDR5 5600MHz RAM. This combo will also allow me to use AV1 codec. Or should I consider equivalent AMD CPU?

But most importantly I need help in finding a suitable motherboard for this setup and preferably under 220USD.

Is there anyone out there who has this or similar setup and can comment and recommend a suitable Motherboard?

My parts picker list.

My first thoughts are whether your set up will give a good VR experience. My feelings are that it will work okay but personally I would temper my expectations.

If you can I would maybe save up a bit more and get a RTX 4070 or perhaps wait for the Super versions to come out. I will be doing a new build myself next year and the new 4070 Super will be a contender depending though on price and availabilty. Maybe even look at an AMD GPU though and get a lot more VRAM for your money?

Regarding your CPU and motherboard others here are better to advise if you are wanting to go with Intel. I have decided personally to go the AMD 5 route and wait for the 8000 CPUs which are due out around (?) 1st/2nd quarter next year. I do wonder though how well the Intel 6 core 12400 will perform in VR :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the response.

Well waiting is not an option. So I guess I will have to make a choice. I was considering going Ryzen way but they are not cheaper than intels and thus there is no incentive to go that way. Of course it could be a personal choice but knowing the background of AMD I do not wish spending hours fixing the drivers :smirk:

You know the prices of 4070 is double those pf 4060, so no budget for it. I could easily swap it in a year when the prices drop. Meanwhile I will have plenty of tine testing this setup.

GPU is critical for VR due to resolutions handled. Spend as much as possible on the GPU. You can save on the other components.
Your components will be in the low midrange class, I would save on the liquid cooler and consider some budget upgrade for stronger GPU.

I’m recently installed a Thermalright Peerless Assassin on my undervolted 5800X3D, and it’s performing brilliantly. $40 and I’m seeing around 56°C in flight, with a very modest fan curve. Of course, having a lot of case airflow helps.

FYI, there are no overclocking options with an F class CPU. If you intend to overclock you need a K class cpu.

These are all good advices. The Mortar Mobos can overclock locked F CPUs but would I still want to do that when this CPU has 4.4GHz boost? OC up to what 5GHz? The difference will be marginal but will be adding up to the total cost.

This will sound irrational but we humans are such by nature(most of the time). I always wanted liquid cooling (“tried” to build one in the 90s) so I am going to have it now :stuck_out_tongue:

I have now narrowed down Mobo choice to B760 ones. Just need to more more research in that area, but likely any of MSI, Asus, Gigabyte will do What I want is to have some capacity to upgrade to better CPUs/GPUs in 1-2 years when the prices drop.

That’s always a gamble. They could just as easily cost twice as much. imo the 4070 is the way to go. 8 GB of ram is limiting now, or will be very soon. I’ve got 12 and it’s maxed with everything. If you can’t afford it, you can’t, but don’t just go thinking you can upgrade for cheap later. We just got done with 2 yrs of near unaffordable GPU’s.

The strongest advice I have is do NOT go cheap on a motherboard. They’re the unsung heroes of the entire system. Not that you have to go really high end - just don’t go low end.

Hello I have an rtx4060 from Asus and I think I should have taken something else for fs2020 not vr it’s ok but in vr I had good results but after finding the best configuration with openxr toolkit but I guess that an rtx4070 with 16 of ram gives something else
My configuration is
i7 12700k, asus prime b760 + 32 ddr5 6000 and water Cooler corsair 115i capellix And my rtx 4060 8g
