In some hypothetical universe where an RTX 3090 was available to purchase for the average person, I’m wondering what else on my rig would I need to upgrade in order to be able to use it? Below are my specs. I’m not a hardware guy by any means, so all of this is a little out of my depth.
Intel i7 10700K
ASUS Rog Strix z490e motherboard
16 GB ram
750w power supply
I knew I was forgetting something…I also have 2 970 EVO SSD 500GB - M.2 NVMe.
So the best Path forward for this pc is to increase the RAM and get a 3080?
I definitely don’t want to get too deep on this as I just built it last year. I guess I missed some opportunities on this build, but I’ll do something better down the road.
I’ve just been through an upgrade cycle and did a bunch of research.
Another 16GB RAM for sure.
In my recent upgrade I got 3200mhz ram but it was stuck at 2666 because of a misconfig. MSFS benchmark increased by about 10% when I fixed that, so worth getting fast memory.
If you already have some sort of SSD, the real-life benchmarks on moving to a NVMe M.2 disk suggest you might save 2-3 seconds of load time and that’s it.
CPU is limited by single-threaded performance, so I wouldn’t touch that. Make sure you’ve O/C’d it to a reasonable level. Made a huge difference for me.
Published benchmarks on PCI 4 and the 3080 show about a 3% improvement.
Agree with everyone who says 3080 and not TI or 3090.
Thanks all for your input! I have an RTX 2080 Super currently, and after going back and looking into it further, I do in fact have 32GB of RAM. It’s Corsair Vengeance 3.2Ghz, so I guess I’m good there for now.
It sounds like the best path forward for me is to get an RTX 3080 whenever they come available, and then look to upgrade my pc at some point in the future. Also possibly look into overclocking my CPU.
If I’m trying to play in VR, wouldn’t the additional VRAM of a 3080 ti be beneficial? I noticed the 3080 has 8GB VRAM, while the ti has 12GB. I’ve heard VR can use upwards of 16GB. I’m just worried about having a similar experience in VR as I am currently, which is to say, a disappointing experience.
I’ve shot myself in the foot with VR. Was enjoying FS on high to ultra settings in 2D, and I had adjusted to using keyboard shortcuts for cockpit views (e.g. turning base to final and scanning from outside the cockpit to the instruments). Then I experienced the immersion and ease in VR in doing the same thing, and it’s VERY difficult to go back to 2D. Unfortunately the graphics are just really bad in VR for me. So I’ve essentially spoiled the experience for myself. lol. I may just take a break for a while and wait for the 3080 to come available, and for MS to do some performance tweaking on the VR experience.
Wow! this is huge, thank you. I’m not really a hardware expert, although I do consider myself tech savvy (I’m a software developer by trade), but I just assumed overclocking would be above my pay grade. I’ll definitely give all of this a try and then report back.
