Aeroplane-Heaven Lancaster Discussion

Interestingly, it is the equivalent of £26.60 on their own site ….. $34.99

Perhaps they want MP to be overpriced so they sell more direct.

All three are $34.99 for me.

Edit: And Orbx is $34.63. Since there’s no tax from AUS, that’d be the place, were I to buy it.

There is now a mod on flightsim.to for a castering tailwheel. Proving it can be done, shame it isn’t a toggleable option in the aircraft.

Also a bit disappointing that I see there are switches that show hide crew models etc, it really should be a standard to have clipboard or efb to toggle things like that as none existent switches are a bit 2004.

I guess retailers can charge what they like and the market will respond.

It’s definitely not a bad product by any means but I wouldn’t call it a great one either. The colour matching on some of the roundels is off and PA474 has quite a few inaccurates on it. It’s certainly the best Lancaster we are going to have for quite some time and if you can, flightsim.to will surely cover a few of the sins on the liveries front.

A clipboard would have been a much better way for them to have done it. Still, overall I like the product a lot.

I have finally had some time to sit down and try fly the Lancaster. Unfortunately I am quite disappointed through multiple counts. I hold out hope that AH may one day update the aircraft and take feedback on board. I am very happy a Lancaster has been brought into the sim, I just wish it was higher fidelity.

It’s 2025, this looks like it was almost a direct import from the last AH Lancaster (in fact, looking at old screenshots, i’d say that is exactly what it is.. with maybe some slightly updating texturing).
It would have been nice to have different options for the model, like the larger engine air intakes.

The prop pitch changes with the engine off while moving the lever - not accurate.
The brake lever on the yoke doesn’t seem to animate correctly.

In general the systems are paper thin, it is a big aircraft but not actually that complex for the most part systems wise. It seems like a lot of low effort workarounds have been made instead of real depth.

The sounds for the engines are okay, however missing some details the aircraft goes silent on engine shutdown, no propellor noise or anything. The rest of the sounds are poor and some are just not there. Like the lack of sounds for the pneumatic brakes. Overall very lacking.

The aircraft is very sensitive in the pitch, even with an extension on my control stick and curves it was rather excessive.

The in game checklist is basic and has things in a strange order.

As previously said, a clipboard or some efb integration should be the bare minimum standard nowadays.

I understand that there are different levels of expected quality and fidelity, however the bar has been set very high by other developers at a similar cost.

Just downloaded to Xbox and ready to go!

I’ve been waiting for this plane to drop and it has been worth the wait. What a joy this Lancaster is. Looks great, sounds great, fun to fly; what more can you ask. It comes with 8 liveries, a few static vehicles and crew both in and out of the plane. The manual is nicely put together and helpful. Many thanks to Aeroplane Heaven and Echo 19 for all the work in bringing it to MSFS. I downloaded it to 2020 on XboxS and was able to fly it in both 2020 and 2024 with no noticeable impact on game performance.

Despite of the many YouTube films I have seen on this plane, I have never seen how to navigate during the normal night flights of the Lancaster in MSFS 2020. Many on how to start, none of them to navigate! I have tried the Lancaster radios, while using NDB and VOR & ILS frequencies. However, non of the instruments seem to work! The Beam Approach Indicator, and the D.F. Indicator ( RMI and CDI) stick to the same location; I never saw the procedure to get it really to work. Light pylons for navigation also regularly stop… As a result, night flying without moving map Navigraph is a disaster. Anyone has seen something on real night navigation for the Lancaster, in a YouTube instruction video?

‘Real’ night navigation? That’s something of a lost art.

Navigation at night in WW2, over a blacked out Europe relied on dead reckoning, working out wind drift, taking star shots and the eyes of the bomb aimer up front to try and pick out land marks on the ground like coastlines, rivers, lakes, etc.

By the time the Lancaster entered service some electronic navigation aids were being introduced but they were primitive and often short range.

Check this out;

Not YouTube but something of a Labour of love by the son of a WW2 Lancaster navigator.

Well, it looks like it doesn’t work in 2024, but there’s this…

https://flightsim.to/file/17738/celnav-for-msfs-celestial-navigation-sextant

Thanks for your reply, maybe “real” is not the right word… As four radio navigation instruments are found in the Aeroplane Heaven Lancaster cockpit, and two radios for ADF , and Navigation and Communication in the wireless workspace, I would expect some detailed explanation somewhere how to use it for navigation purposes.

From several sources, I understand it should be operational. Some suggest, the radios should be turned on, but how?? I am familiar with NDB, VOR, ILS and ADF..

OK, for me that is a bit too far… My brother, who used to navigate on the big oceans, tried to learn me how to use his sextant and interpret all the tables, but I am afraid it was beyond my league..

This is why the accuracy of Bomber Command raids early in the war was so atrocious. A report in 1941 concluded that less than one third of aircraft on sorties got within 5 miles of their target (Butt Report - Wikipedia)

Tune the radio at the wireless operator station.

I’ve had vor, ndb and ils all working

I have vor/ils working from day 1. NDB no response, I know NDB is a thing of the past now but tuning to an existing NDB, the nav instruments do not respond but fine on an ils frequency or vor. I’m trying the NT ndb at Newcastle UK.

Just out of curiosity…

Do the prop spinners turn semi-transparrent when spinning?

Thanks :+1:
