Well, if I could wish for something …
I just flew through some National Parks in Africa and think there’s room for improvement.
usually there’re no street lights in National Parks, but in FS2020 there are which you’ll realize if you fly at night.
there’re not animals around. I know that there are some places where you can easily find some, but it would make a lot of sense to put them into at least some well-known NPs around the world, and not just to some “places”.
The whole African continent seems never to have received the attention it surely deserves by any flight sim franchise. I have made several low and slow in sim long distance trips there, and would say MSFS has raised the bar scenery wise. However I’ve never seen any animals! and in some areas the ground textures still are nothing like the quality we can see for example in Europe.
Well, I cannot say this. They are there, and in “ultra” setting (meaning “not that low”) you should not have difficulty spotting herds of at least African buffalos, giraffes and zebras in the well-known NP areas if you fly no higher than, lets say, 100m above ground over areas with no or few trees as this is where they spawn.
Still, as pointed out in other threads, it’s easier to find animals in reality than in FS2024.
This photo from Etosha pan might be a bit biased (and utilizes the telezoom) but it shows they are there:
Actually, having seen the state of XPlane 12 a few years ago where Africa was devoid of almost anything and navigating by sight was impossible I must say that FS2024 is really fun to use for bush flights if you put aside smaller visual glitches, almost non-existing lions and hyenas and the excessive trees (which hopefully will be resolved in SimUpdate 2 … we’ll see). I just love the African trees, for example here in Mapungubwe NP, SA:
As said, what’s missing is some special care for the National Parks, e.g. in terms of street lamps, animal occurence and maybe even some custom models for visitor centers, POI etc. I guess some addon sceneries will care about this over time.
I’m rarely below 500ft so perhaps that alone explains the lack of animals for me? The trees do indeed look terrific in MSFS 2024 as your screenshot shows, for reasons I’ve explained in other posts I’ll be sticking with 2020 for the foreseeable future though, and will have to make the best of it.
In Career mode, there should be charter flights to the private reserves around Kruger National Park. IRL, this is how most visitors access them. Currently, there are none and I have never seen them in Career mode ever.
There are no charter flights at all that I can see in South Africa or Botswana - and I suspect through most of Africa but I haven’t opened up much north of Botswana. Maybe the mission updates that are supposedly coming soon will fix this, I’m not holding my breath though. Most of the noise has been about the lack of VIP missions, not the lack of the standard charter missions that are totally absent in some parts of the world.
I’d like to see a hand crafted Skukuza airport. All we can do is keep pushing for more attention to be paid to Africa.
I am afraid this “pushing” is a rather sisyphean prospect. It is already a near impossible task to get the devs to recognize game-breaking bugs in career mode.
I hope we will see a World Update focused on Africa soon. However I must say that a lot of places in Africa look incredibly good in 2024. I find the safari photo missions especially enjoyable and relaxing.
I gave some of these mission ago and I did find them fun. Relaxing as you say. I would like it if there was a way to see all the different objectives while flying rather than just the chosen one, but I can easily jot them on a notepad so that if I see a species I know what the photo objectives are.
I was impressed out how atmospheric it is walking around on the ground, even the sound design is pretty decent, surprisingly so.
I did however spend a decent chunk time flying around Lake St. Lucia and and the estuary without spotting a single hippo, the last time I was there for real it was difficult to move about without seeing a hippo, but I suppose the spawn logic for wildlife isn’t very granular or necessarily true to real life. It would be great if this received some improvements but I suppose it will be low on the list of things to look at given the other things that need fixing or improving in the sim.
Agree. I looked all over for local flights starting within my own country, Namibia, but nothing. Africa is really getting neglected in this sim. The Capital cities or at least Windhoek looks nothing like in real life. I don’t expect Microsoft/OSOBO do every single village in Namibia, but seriously, at least try do the capital cities. How are they going to build/expand their product on the African continent with crab like this?
