Who else is getting asked to verify their age on Xbox?
Are we required to do it if we do not play on an Xbox?
Does or would it affect Steam users and PS5 users if we don’t?
Im not so sure I want to put all my private personal info on Xbox when MS already has it all. What a nonesense!

Pilotfirst9999, in many countries, governments are forcing service providers like Microsoft to verify users’ ages. So I would not shout at Microsoft but at your government.

Hi Mathijs,
I am not shouting at anyone and yes I am aware of govt requirements. Since so much of the world online is automated, MS of course has to know how old I am by this time! And no this is not the answer to my question!
Since MS must have verified my age and personal details, because I have an account with them and have purchased items, they should be able to verify I have been with them for more years than I can remember.
Indeed, my account is old enough to have its own account.

That’s not the same as Proof of Age, unfortunately, anyone can punch in some random numbers. I had to do it before Christmas so I could continue playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I was like, seriously? I saw each film when they were originally released in the cinema.
I do agree though, if you’re paying for something like Gamepass or adding wallet tokens, this SHOULD prove you’re at least old enough to have a bank/credit account (which may differ depending on country of course).

Yes agreed, but I do not play on Xbox, only PC and PS5. The only time I, and anyone else on Steam/PC sign in is initially via Xbox to play on PC.
I am not comfortable with them having my passport or drivers licence etc considering they are regularly hacked.
Only the other day a pilot had his details stolen and someone purchased stuff via his account.
I had to deal with this recently. You are just not allowed to use the data you have, you are obliged to ask again. Expect to see this on many services soon.

I just sent them a picture of my face, then it said, “yep, you’re old” and let me in. According to the provider that MS use (I forget the name, but I could find out), the data is deleted. Now, whether that’s to be believed or not, who knows. I would assume there’d be some hefty penalties for them if not.
EDIT: Provider is Yoti.

Just your face? OK I can do that and break their internet connection
. Thanks for that, but that also begs the question with AI and these apps that can make you look 20y old again, how do they verify it is not one of those AI generated pics?
Dont get me wrong, Im happy just to send my wrinkles to them.

Ehem…. That’s already happening lol, but not by me.

Thanks, done it.
It says it deletes your face straight away.

Brilliant! Now you’re old enough to fly some virtual polygons.

Oh boy, if I am old enough to buy my polygons I should be allowed to fly them
without all this kerfuffle.
I would understand if this was an age restricted site but it isn’t!

I’ve had this a couple of times, but whenever I’ve followed the “link” I get no further. But I’ve never yet been denied access to any of MS services, so I’m beginning to wonder if this is a fishing exercise, in other words, a scam. I certainly wouldn’t put in any details more than I’ve already told MS. My advice is ignore it!
I quite agree, got to be careful these days but in my case (and I assume OPs as well), this was a notification inside the Xbox app itself via the notification bell. It literally wouldn’t let me load up Indy which is hilarious at my age but there we are.
If you search on the xbox app itself it shows the age verification issue. We only had to “show our face”
literally

Now, will our faces show up as central antagonists when AI inevitably becomes self aware Skynet style? I sincerely hope not!!
I’m building a bunker in preparation lol.
Well, at least there is a trail for lawyers to follow via xbox. Maybe we’ll be able to afford cryogenics in a gold plated scale model replica of a business jet when they are done

Hi @Pilotfirst9999
If you’re in the UK, the recent UK Online Safety Act means Xbox now has an age verification process as part of the compliance programme for this act. Please feel free to read the article linked below, which explains about the age verification process, as well as what features may be restricted if you wish to choose to not confirm your age: UK age verification on Xbox | Xbox Support
Thanks
The MSFS Team
The email message you get if you live in the UK also says this:
“While choosing not to verify your age by early 2026 will limit your ability to use social features on Xbox, your previous purchases, entitlements, and gameplay history and achievements will not be affected, and you will still be able to play and purchase games.”
As long as that doesn’t change, I can live without “social features” – The biggest problem I have with all of this, doesn’t even touch on government overreach. It is simply that I am sick and tired of the way I am expected to jump through hoops to accommodate a multitude of lazy solutions that demand my time and attention in an era where technological advances were supposed to make our lives simpler.
As it stands, I have to spend precious time shifting through bucket loads of spam emails that get sent to me daily because someone or other is tracking me and I can’t fully trust spam filters. Use a password safe for hundreds of accounts I don’t want, but have to have for some service or other I only use once in a blue moon, or have nothing to do with what I originally intended to do - and the list goes on…
So, no thanks, I’m not adding ‘prove your age’ to the list because some government appointed entity or other can’t be bothered to do all the work themselves without directly involving me; as if they don’t already have a multitude of data about me that they could cross-reference and use for verification.
