Alder Lake i9-12900k

Indeed which is why I’m a bit unsure of the conclusion that the 12900k is bringing approx 7fps (20-30%) better performance than 10900k in these VR scenarios. Could it be that the 10900k was tested before some of the sim performance enhancements? Thanks !

I couldn’t tell you especially as I don’t have VR but I do know it is very GPU intensive. As with any benchmark tests they always need to be from an as equal footing as possible but of course that in itself can’t really establish limits when different MBs and ram gets involved.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Every day is a school day for me. So much to learn.

Very good performance on a platform that looks like it is going to have so much potential.

Cheers.

These numbers I gave are a rough estimate - factoring in both performance gains due to different hardware but also performance differences due to sim updates at the same in-game settings. And yes 11900k vs. 10900k was tested with SU4 (?) where I gained roughly 4…5 FPS at the same settings etc. but different CPU and mainboard. Then came SU5 where I saw no performance difference and SU6 with a drop of roughly 1…2 FPS. Then with SU6 and new CPU and mainboard, I’m getting what you see in the plots above.
I am sure aware of the difficulties in direct comparison when different software and hardware versions are involved. It also depends on your overall specs including SSDs, RAM, Windows version etc. That’s why you should at least take the 10900k vs. 12900k numbers with a grain of salt, while the 11900k vs. 12900k are with as close matching software and hardware as possible.

Hope that helps a little.

As a bottom line I’d say if you’re on a 10900k or 11900k, the upgrade to 12900k is not worth it in terms of MSFS when running at 4K and/or VR - at least currently with early and immature DDR5. In my initial post, with older CPUs I meant pre-10900k. Instead of upgrading from 10900k to 12900k it would probably be better if you managed to overclock your current-gen GPU by 50…100 MHz or more if possible.

So you was in gpu limit all time?

Yes, as far as could be told by watching the developer mode overlay. Still, the CPU may and obviously does have some impact on minimum/low FPS, even if it is small.

Thanks for this report. Staying put with my 11900k. Holding out to see what Raptor lake brings.:+1:

Agreed, this is the key point and to be expected at 4K. If 4K is your primary gaming resolution, the processor choice makes very little difference, especially when jumping to the next generation.

Given the current limitations of DX11 maim thread rendering, one potential benefit of the 12900k is the ridiculous single-core speed. This may help when limited by the main thread, but the upcoming DX12 implementation may make that benefit a bit irrelevant.

Good choice. Regarding MSFS, I would rather like to see an affordable RTX4080 or 4090 before investing in further minuscule CPU improvements.

There is absolutely no difference between 10900K and 12900K. I do not have 12900K in hand, but tested 11900K against 10900K on the same MB, RAM, 6800XT, Reverb G2 with the same SU6. Any difference I saw was within margin of error. The SIM is GPU bound in VR and unless we get to RDNA3 or RTX 4000s, 12900K will not add anything to the performance. If you have 7th or 8th gen, you may see some improvement.

Well, tested today i9-12900k (coming from an old i7-8700k) and FPS increased about 2-3 fps, using LOD 200 (higher than that I was limited by mainthread ). However, now I can push until LOD 400 and I’m still limited by GPU (with the old processor running LOD 400 gives me 10-15 fps).

So for me, the upgrade was worth. Running in G2 with OXR 200 and TAA 50 with solid 28-30 fps, and a 3090.

Sounds great, I’m coming form a 7700k and 2080ti, going to the 12900KF and 3080ti.

I’m going to setup and then get off the hardware forums because whether any improvement is down to the GPU, CPU, both it neither, I will have flying to do!

Very good information !

Got my 12900k to work changed only the CPU and Mainboard coming from 9900k and 33GB DDR4 4133 and win10.

Now on Win11 and the 12900k gets hot with my Noktua DH15…

But the FPS are amazing. I can just smile. LOD 400 and 400 feet over big cities in a king air and i almost never Fall under 40 FPS

A bit higher then my 3070 limits … so great cpu

I have an i9-12900K sitting here with ROG MAX FORUMLA MB and no DDR5 in Australia yet!!

Don’t quote me but I believe it is backwards compatible with ddr4 … However I don’t know if the slots are the same so you might need an adapter.

No, it isn’t. That is why we see mobo Z690 have two versions for DDR4 and DDR5 seperately.

Ah I see … but at least I did say don’t quote me. I shall remember this info should I ever win the lottery.

At lot of you tubers were stating that they would be and they look like they are backwards compatible until you try to put them in then youll notice the little notch sits about 5 mm further down the board……DOH!
