Alienware Aurora R16

Just curious for some opinions on this… Was looking to get a pre-built gaming PC and came across Best Buy’s deal for $1,199. Specs below:

Core i7 14th Gen
16GB RAM
GeForce 4060ti 8gb GDDR6
1TB SSD DDR5

I would ideally like to run the sim @ 1440p Ultra settings, but possibly switch up to 4K at some point. Is this a decent option? Open to other suggestions in that price range. Thanks!

Nope. Not enough VRAM and that GPU is low-end. Also 32gb ram would be a lot better. And what type of storage does that have? NVMe 2tb is the minimum you should aim for IMO.

I bought an R13 just before COVID and… buy another PC (local store made) few weeks later. The compact and small form factor of the Aurora case is not a good idea even if mine was water cooled. I even changed the front and top fan with Noctua’s. And the RTX3080 was fan noisy when flying in MSFS. I won’t recommend Aurora if you care of your PC noise. Just my two cents.

To go to 4k you kind of need the big guns that put you in the ~$1600 min-$2000 plus class. At 1440 dedicated you can save some money, but you need a good CPU and 32MB of ram as a base. If you have to buy twice you never saved a penny. I’d decide if you’re staying 1440 and set a budget.

Easiest way to build a flex machine is to build the core 7800X3D, M650/AM5 mobo, and 32GB 6000 ram. You can run a budget friendly solid 1440 card and have the base to dump anything up to and including a 4090 in it later an rock on without anything else needed. That package is so solid it’s outright difficult to ‘save’ even $100 on mobo/cpu/ram going any other way.

You can build it yourself, it’s easy. Trim the fat on case unicorn disco lights and goofy coolers you don’t need.

Hmmm ok. Saw a YT video doing benchmark testing on the 4060ti 8gb, set to 1440p Ultra settings, and was getting 50-60fps. Now, I don’t know the rest of the rig specs but figured this could handle it.

Ya, I noticed the reviews on the older Aurora’s weren’t good. The R16 has a new case, much more similar to a traditional desktop, and much better reviews. Was just curious for the price.

1440 might just be able to cope but you mentioned 4K?

That’s all well and good…until the sim starts gobbling up 12GB VRAM and your computer becomes a popcorn machine.

Monitor is currently only 1440p, but might upgrade to 4K in the future (MSFS 2024?), or go to a dual 1440p setup.

You’re gonna need another PC for 4K. That dog won’t hunt.

Go to the Dell/Alienware site and check out the configurations available. They always have some decent sales going and if you talk to a sales rep, you can usually get a further discount.

I have the R16 top spec (14900KF/4090) and ended up paying less than I could buy the parts for…delivered to my door and with a 1-year in home warranty. No issues with it so far…very pleased. No overheating issues and no howling fans etc…

4060 ti will struggle at 1440 single, definitely won’t manage 1440 dual and forget 4k with it. I speak from experience.

Building a PC yourself is dead easy, and you get to put in the exact components you want, as well as ignore the things you don’t want. But if you need a pre-build, ask your local computer shop what they can provide as a dedicated flight sim machine.
