ALL planes have max allowed cruise speed too low

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
ALL planes have max allowed cruise speed too low (and then ATC faults my performance in career mode)

When I fly in Career I noticed ATC would complain that I was exceeding the max cruise speed, even at lower speeds. For example at 90 kts in the Cessna 172, I would get “max cruise speed exceeded” deductions. Investigating the issue, I looked at the EFB and the Aircraft screen, to see the details of the aircraft. I noticed on the main Aircraft screen (see attachment - Screenshot 2) the Cruise Speed was listed as only 67 kts. If I clicked on the “Aircraft Information” button on that screen (see attachment - Screenshot 3), I would see the aircraft listed as Cruise Speed of 124 kts (the correct value). I think the 67 kts value is indicative of why ATC keeps giving me “max cruise speed exceeded” errors, as I tested this by flying below 67 kts with that aircraft and never saw the exceeded warning, but when I went above 67 kts, I saw the exceeded warning again. Any idea why this would happen and how I can fix it?

This problem is making my enjoyment level of this game MUCH lower and will result in me uninstalling the game if I don’t find a solution, as it’s ruining my Career experience. PLEASE help me find a solution.

If applicable, which aircraft is experiencing this issue:
Example provided with Cessna 172, but this is true of ALL aircraft I’ve tried (looked at this in Free Flight, to see a number of possible planes). Every one of them I’ve looked at has a max cruise speed that is much lower (around half) than the actual max cruise speed, as indicated by the max cruise speed deductions. For example, the 737 Max shows max of 246 kt (and 455 kt on the Aircraft Information screen).

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

I have no community mods/add-ons.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

Alway flights (ATC complains only in Career mode, of course).

What I’ve tried so far:

  • uninstalled and reinstalled the game (no effect)
  • switched airplanes (no effect)
  • tried different modes (i.e. free flight vs career) (no errors in free flight, I guess, but I think the game only gives the “max cruise speed exceeded” warning in Career mode)
  • checked to see if does same thing in VR mode with my VR headset (no effect)
  • played with “Sim Rate” settings (no effect)
  • switched between Freelancer and Employee missions in Career (no effect)

That one happened to be passenger. But I see that reduced Cruise Speed on the first screen for every plane I’ve looked at. It’s always a little more than 50% of the expected value (and the value on the Aircraft Information screen always matches the expected value). So the “exceeded max cruise speed” ATC nag will happen on any plane I fly in Career mode.

Thanks for looking at this. I was pretty sure this is not a commonly seen problem. I did an extensive web search to see if others had reported it and found nothing.

Really weird…, I don’t know what it could be and so far no one else reported the same issue :slightly_frowning_face:.
Tested with the G36 & TBM, looks good:

Another piece of data - that I find quite interesting, but no clue what it tells the developers:

I was able to load MSFS 2024 on a different computer here - and the problem is seen on that computer, as well. This was a computer that had never had MSFS 2024 installed on it before. I of course was still logged in as my GamerTag (I play the game through PC Game Pass).

This means it’s got to be something associated with my “user data” saved in MSFS 2024 cloud data. I can’t imagine what setting that would be, but I sure would love a work-around to fix this. I’m not changing my account to a new GamerTag and/or losing all my Career progress.

Good point. In case it is link to your account, I would recommend you to create a zendesk ticket to get direct support from the Microsoft technical team: https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. They me have good advice to share or if not log that issue in their system and make some investigation.

Did that last night. This morning I saw they had marked it as Solved, but said it was a Bug. I believe they said this means it’s passed to the devs to look into, but I won’t get further feedback directly. One of the generic suggestions was to post here, so I did that today, hoping that someone might actually have some experience pointing to possible work-arounds. No luck, so far.

Very strange. I’ll take a look at this myself and get back to you. I’ve never experienced this myself.

Okay I checked, and my cruise speed is correct at 124kts. I’m stumped.

For what it’s worth, my take on this is that it’s a unit conversion error between knots & km/h.

67 knots is 124 km/h (67*1.852=124.084).

Try changing your settings w.r.t units.

Brilliant! That pushed me in the right direction.

Settings → General → Language → Units of Measurement

I switched this from US System to Metric System and the EFB units match between the 2 screens now! There was a downside to this change, in that the plane gauges still report in kts/ft, so I flew a test flight and did some rough conversions to follow mission ATC instructions. And on this mission, ATC did not complain about my flight speed ever! It was pleasant seeing my bonus not get reduced for those ATC complaints!

I then set the units back to US System and the EFB once again did not match - the main screen showed 67 kts again. So the setting is the clear problem for this mismatch. The value is clearly computed incorrectly for some reason. I’d be curious to see whether anyone else using US System units are seeing the same EFB mismatch.

But the real issue for me was not the EFB mismatch for cruise speed. The impact (I guessed) was that I kept getting ATC complaints on missions about exceeding maximum cruise speed (at like 90 kts in my Cessna 172).

The good news: when I switched to Metric, ATC no longer complained (noted above)!
The sort of bad news: when I switched back to US System, I saw the EFB mismatch for cruise speed again, but during the mission ATC did NOT complain. So it would appear the EFB mismatch for cruise speed was NOT an indicator of the “max cruise speed” issue I was seeing earlier. Or setting to Metric “cleared” the issue, somehow, ever after switching back to US units.

End result, the EFB issue now seems to have a root cause - hopefully the devs will figure out how to fix that mismatch on the cruise speed values. Although the EFB mismatch is just a visual bug, it might be the source of the larger “max cruise speed” issue I was having with ATC earlier. If the unit was confused in the EFB, maybe it was confused elsewhere, as well.

If I learn anything new from testing, I’ll share.

Thank you SO MUCH for suggesting the units change! Hopefully this remains a reliable work-around to the issue.

The challenge is for other users/devs to be able to reproduce your issue.
I did try to change the Unit of Measurement to Metrics (even Hybrid) and switch back to US System but the speeds keep matching (I am on SU3 so maybe no issue there ?).
How do you have your EFB configured for the speed ?

Which speed are you seeing on that screen when you have US System configured ?

What are your Windows 10/11 and FS2024 language setup ?

I am on the latest production version - not a beta.

Same exact settings as you showed in your screenshot. So speed is kts.

On the aircraft selection screen like you showed:
124 KTAS

Win 11, FS 2024 en-US. I’m in the US, so base everything on US by default.

Thanks for you continued interest. I’ll do what I can to help make this reproducible. I know how important that is.

No community mods but do you have any market place items enabled? Liveries or anything at all from 3rd party.

Nope. Nothing. Based game only.

I did open and look around at Developer Mode at one point - to check out FPS info. That is not enabled anymore. I also uninstalled/reinstalled the game after seeing the problem, but don’t think I’ve re-enabled Dev Mode since then.

I do switch back and forth from VR mode. I see Cruise Speed differences in both VR and pancake.
