In reality the switch is mechanically designed so that you can never turn on the alternator without a load from the battery. So if you turn on the alternator the battery also gets turned on. If you turn off the battery, the alternator gets turned off also. What you can do however is turn the alternator off with the battery running (done e.g. during the run-up checks).
