From a reliable benchmark I have seen, Hardware Unboxed, the RTX 3080 FE and the FE version of the RX 6800XT are essentially identical at 1440p, with the RTX 3080 performing 7fps better at 4K. This was on the Sydney landing challenge at ultra settings. CPU was a Ryzen 9 3950X. So the 5000 gen Ryzens would be somewhat faster.
Was about to make a thread.Currently on 1440p and my 8gb card is bottlenecking me at big airports.I wonder if I should get the 6800xt just for the extra vram.3080 doesnāt look quite future proof to me on the vram side.
I think nVidia will be coming out with a 3080Ti soonish, with more VRAM to compete with the AMD cards. Not that most people will be able to get their hands on one, sad to say.
I am very interested in this thread but it becomes a little daunting.
I am thinking of upgrading my GPU but just experienced the following:
Present system:
MSI Z 390 MB (Pro Carbon AC)
32 GB Memory
C: = M2.1 is a 970 EVO Plus 500GB (90 GB for Win 10) and D: = same(500 - 90)GB
FS2020 installed on C: and D: (32 GB Rollover on C:)
Intel i7 9700 CPU
Nvidia MSI 1660Ti GPU
I upgraded to an Intel i9 9900 CPU (wanted Multi threading)
Very surprised with the great scenery improvement in FS2020.
I was thinking the GPU controlled this mainly. (Never seen a 2080Ti on FS2020 in person)
Cessna CJ4 flies smoothly and is responsive.
But going from (8 Cores 0 Thread) to (8 Cores and 16 Threads) was the only change.
9700 running 4.7 GB and 9900 4.8 GB (plus Multi threading)
I am very surprised (and delighted).
I wonder what a 10, 12, 16 Core processor would do.
Would an expensive GPU be needed (or worth it)?
Frame Rates listed donāt seem to be that much higher.
It does sound crazy to me!
But I canāt afford the new 10th Gen CPU and required new MB.
What are your thoughts on this? CPU or GPU ???
Note: Just an FS2020 person.
This comment does not apply to other Games.
Thanks for your thoughts.
I have been mulling over upgrading to the 9900k from my 9600k now that prices are a little less than 350USD. 2 more cores and double that threads.
8C/8T is as far as I can tell just below whatās needed for the sim.
6C/12T is the current sweet spot, 8C/16T could give you a bit more future proofing. Anything more than that is basically wasted for gaming/simming workloads, and will only pay off if youāre doing productivity workloads (rendering, video editing, floating point stuff).
5800x + 3080 EVGA FTW3 ultra here. I get mostly solid 40/50 FPS @4k on high and everything set to 100. Had a 1080ti before and was at or below 30FPS with same settings. all in all a 40-50% increase. VRAM isnt even close to being used so for those saying it could be an issue, it is not currently. DX12, we will see. BTW I paid way too much money for this card (1100usd equiv in Europe)but ive been waiting forever to upgrade from the 1080ti so I just did it because otherwise you will just wait and wait forever for cards that are impossible to get. CPU is very important so If you want the best performance out of this very expensive GPU, you better get the latest ryzen or intel CPU to pair it with. cheers!
Just an update to this: Flew EDDF -LFPG in the latest a320fbw. Mainly 40FPS in cockpit sometimes below. upon landing at CDG frames dropped to 20FPS. GPU got smashed and the timing went from 18-20ms to 50/60ms. HEY MS/ASOBO fix your software, OK!! This is a complete disaster. Also the ground textures look like an 8 bitNES game from FL380. Again, this is totally unacceptable from the latest and greatest. Go fly at FL380 in XP11 and tell meit doesnt blow this out of the water. If I am doing something wrong settings wise, please adviseā¦
Itās been a while since the last reply of this very interesting discussion.
I was lucky to find a 3080 about a month ago, but my first choice was the 6800 XT, which I couldnāt find anywhere at non offensive price.
Overall I prefer the AMD Adrenalin software from when I had a 5700 XT, and moving to Nvidia I miss for example the CAS image sharpening.
The availability of any of these two GPUās seemed to have dried out even more recently, but in the meantime AMD has come up with new drivers for 2021.
Any experiences with it in Flight Simulator ?
As you can see from my earlier posts here, I was lucky enough to get a 6800XT an 3090 at the same time. I did some benchmarking with both and found little advantage in the 3090. General benchmarks find the NVidia cards really have the advantages at 4K, and I did most of my testing at 3440x1440 Ultrawide. So I kept the 6800XT given it was 1/3 the cost.
I have now starting to play VR as well on the Reverb G2 and it also runs well though I do get pretty often crash to desktops. Ive seen reports that this is more of a AMD USB issue as there are threads where people are experiencing the same problem with the G2 paired with a Ryzen but running 3080s.
I havent noticed any appreciable differences with the latest driver but I havenāt run any benchmarks either.
My experience has been pretty good with the 6800XT, except for some weird events where everything works fine until I click to begin a flight and loading takes ages and then I only get ten or twelve FPS. The GPU is basically doing nothing. Quitting and restarting the game and everything is usually fine, although I did have to reboot my pc once to fix it. Hasnāt happened in a while now. Suspect itās a driver issue as it never happened with my previous nVidia 1660ti card.
What else, er, shared access memory was a disappointment, as it actually drops FPS by 2-4 frames, so useless for MSFS, on the older driver at least.
Just lately I have had several CTDs, some with the Honeycomb Bravo Bridge driver installed to make the LEDs work. Prior to that I only had maybe three or four CTDs since release. Not the GPUās fault but really annoying.
Performance wise, the 6800XT at 1440p is as good as it gets really, especially with my Ryzen 5600X.
Havenāt noticed any improvement with the new Adrenalin driver as yet, but then again have not been flying much since installing it.
@ozTravmanX Your posts were very helpful and thanks for sharing your experience.
Unfortunately I couldnāt find any 6800 XT, although I had a 6900 XT for a while, but for the price I decided to let it go and keep the 3080.
I play at 2K, and I noticed a significant improvement in situations of being limited by main thread when upgrading from Ryzen 3600 to 5600x. I didnāt do extensive benchmarks but in general I could pass from around 22 to 30 fps in the 747 JFK landing challenge, cockpit view, most settings on ultra.
Back to the GPUās, I run my 3080 slightly undervolted and cut down on frequency. Gives me better temperatures, lower consumption and I still get 60 fps except on big cities.
Itās still good to have the extra headroom of the 3080 available in case I move to 4K.
At this point I will probably keep the 3080 at least until DX12 rolls out, then Iāll see whether itās worth to change to a 6800 XT or not.
This is really just my personal opinion, but if anything, the Xbox will be just a simplified version of the real FS. Perhaps something a bit like in the direction of an āarcadeā version.
If thereās going to be real optimizations and improvements it better be for PC where FS started almost 40 years ago.
I received my Sapphire Nitro + OC SE 6800XT yesterday, having previously only had a 1070. After limited Benchmarking with my new card mostly set to High/Ultra so far Iām very happy with it, Once Iāve done more testing Iāll post some performance data.
I agree with others here. If you have a 3080, then switching to a 6800XT makes little sense, as the performance is essentially identical at 1440p at the moment, with the 3080 pulling ahead at 4K. Sure, there might be some optimisation in the AMD driver going forward, but I canāt really see it making a huge difference.
What might be worth watching though are reports of very high temperatures in the VRAM on 3080 cards that are run flat out, especially for Bitcoin mining. Memory junction temps of 110C have been recorded, which doesnāt auger well for long term use. See article from Tomās Hardware linked below.
Was not aware of this VRAM issue. Classical Technology channel on youtube is also reporting this just hours ago, in that case he found the problem in video rendering intensive tasks.
Shouldnāt be a problem for gaming but worth to check it out anyway.
Iāve just recieved an RTX 3080, but Iāll try mining with it a little, since I also lucked into a brand new 6800XT. My present card, a Geforce 1080 Ti does OK at 1440p but can really lag down to 15-17fps in Londonā¦ I might be back to post my experience with the 6800XT
