AMD graphics driver 21.10.2 is the best ever!

Guys, if you have an AMD graphics card I urge you to update to the latest “recommended” driver 21.10.2. I’ve been flying for hours and the performace is much improved.

Details:
5800x CPU
6900 xt GPU
32 GB RAM
Reverb G2
I have the Steam version of MSFS 2020
I cap my framerate at 33 fps using the radeon chill feature
Using windows OpenXR I do not use motion reprojection

  1. No more stutters
I didn’t have much stuttering with the previous drivers but it intermittently would micro-stutter for some seconds and then stop for awhile and repeat like that. Now… there’s no stutters! None.

  2. Improved resolution settings
Because all stutters went away I can now up my resolution higher. I was running at 70% OpenXR and 100% in game. Now I can run at 90/100 and it’s so smooth still. At 100/100 I can feel it’s off a little so I’m running 90/100. The clarity is much improved.

  3. Using Steam’s OpenXR stutters also went away
I hav never been able to get descent performance when running the game through Steam. But now I can. I tried 100% Steam resolution and 70% game. It worked great. No stutters this way either. However the windows OpenXR still performs better so I use that.

So give the new driver a try and see if you find what I find. I’m excited.

I’ve been using 21.10.2 for some time already, and agree, it works quite well.

noted. updating now from 21.8.2. What headset?

Yes, I saw it was availble awhile ago but it wasn’t "recommended so I usually wait for that. But it’s recommeded now so I just updated and WOW.

I just updated my post with that… Reverb G2.

21.10.3 here

If you’re going to go with an “optional” driver then why not the latest 21.10.4? Also did you experience what I described and is it still stutter-free with the optional drivers? Are they even better?

Is ‘recommended only driver’, smooth

My MSFS crashed for no reason and could not find the MSFS cache path, which resulted in not loading and AMD notifying ‘you don’t have a proper graphics card’, had to reinstall 21.10.3 from scratch. Which is bizer, bad.

Thanks. 21.10.2 is the first driver that has been perfect for me so I’m hesitant to update. It’s good to get confirmation that the next one is just as good.

What is the rest of your settings?

I don’t use VR but had the exact same problem here in 21.10.4…
Reinstalled 21.10.3 and it’s pretty solid.

  • Radeon Chill I set min 30 and max 45 so essentially a 30 fps cap.

  • Regarding all the other Radeon features they’re all off.

  • 90 OpenXR and 100 game resolutions.

  • Both LOD sliders are 100.

  • Anything that’s an on/off option I set to on except I have “light rays” or “shafts” (I forget what it’s called) off.

  • All the other options I find the max value and back it off 1 spot except Volumetric clouds is ultra.

I have a very similar set up to yours. I have the 5950x CPU and the RX 6800 XT GPU. Curious if you have game mode in Windows enabled or disabled?

Just received a 6800xt. Anyone use the sharpening in the radeon settings?

Enabled. It’s a good feature to down prioritize background, non-game related, processes.

My testing has shown it hurts performance and I can’t notice any benefit.

For the AMD drivers, you have several presets. Gaming, Media, Standard, …
In my opinion, as I tried all of them, the Standard preset is the one that works best for MSFS. It’s just the most basic settings, and gets the job done quite nicely.
