AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D and RTX 4080 for MSFS

Hi there
Im thinking about to get a new PC as my old one is getting to its limits. I currently have the following setup in mind:
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
Asus ROG Crosshair x670E Hero motherboard
32GB DDR5 RAM, 4800Mhz (2x16gb)
Asus NVIDIA RTX 4080 TUF O16G, 16gb GDDR6X
2 TB Kingston FURY Renegade SSD
Fractal Meshify 2 Midi Tower

Does anybody have something like this or has an idea if its going to perform well?

Hey there. I have the following build thats similar. I run WIN10 /4K/ DX11/ULTRA with little to no issues.

11th Gen Intel i9/Intel Core i9-11900K Rocket Lake 3.5GHz (5.3GHz Turbo) 10-Core
ASUS ROG Maximus XIII Hero PCI-e 4.0 ( motherboard)
64GB (2x32GB) PC4-25600 DDR4 3200MHz Dual Channel
GeForce RTX 3080 12GB
2TB SAMSUNG 980 PRO m.2 SSD, PCI-Express 4.0, 7000MB/s
Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB 850W

Thanks for the answer!
What is your average FPS like with this system? And do you get any stutters?

I can vouch for a mesh case if that helps :+1: unfortunately that’s all I can vouch for :weary:

So you dont get any overheating or airflow problems with that case?

None at all, mind you I still have a couple of decent but quiet fans just to keep air moving. Now my cpu cooler fan is never maxed out and I find noise is actually less of an issue than it was with a closed case.

Negative…no stutters what soever

What resolution will you be running it at?

I have Samsung G9 Odyssey ultrawide screen with a 5120x1440p resolution.

4K @ 3840x2160

Here is quick screen capture @ 4K

A 4080 should be fine at that resolution, especially if you use frame generation where you should see 80+ FPS.

Im asking myself if the 4090 would be worth the money, but as Im mostly flying the fenix or other „complicated“ airliners im probably going to be CPU-limited anyways, right? Or does the 4090 still have advantages in this case?

I recently went from a 4080 up to a 4090 and for 4K it improved FPS where I wasn’t already CPU limited but also where I was generally getting great FPS with the 4080 in the same scenario anyway. In VR however it made a substantial improvement as in that I am mostly GPU limited so it gave me a great boost in overall performance in areas where I actually benefited from it.

As you say, CPU limiting is likely to be your worst case performance. Below is a screenshot on my system just now at KLAX, cloudy weather (live), FSLTL, A310 (CPU hog) and lots of MP traffic on my 5800X3D and 4090. This is without frame generation, where FPS would be double this, but you can clearly see that I am CPU limited by over 2 to 1, so a 4080 would pull the same FPS in this scenario. Your proposed CPU should be about 20-30% faster than mine so at least you would be in the mid 30’s before frame generation. Also, VRAM use at 8.5GB is well within 4080 VRAM capacity, although this scenario was done in DX11 which is lighter on VRAM use than DX12, but DX12 shouldn’t push it ridiculously higher.

Hi Guys,

I’m with 4080 strix oc and paired with i7 13700k oc at 5.6 GHz and with 32GB ram, I can say that 4080 is more than capable pull stunning fps with Frame Gen I have min 67-71 fps at London Heathrow then same scenario at KLAX and both airports are inibuilds with all activated plus FSLTL on so I can say it’s beautiful specially that my TLoD is set 300 and Ground Details are 200 the rest of settings set to ultra and my traffic I have cars set to 45 and the ships and ferry to 100 then my fauna set to 0 and top option also set to 0 then airport traffic set to 40 and people at airport set to 40 so with this settings my sim just rock solid! Not to mention that flying some places fps gets ridiculous 245fps let’s say flight descovery Brasil I get 205 fps min 160fps!

All the above it’s an 4080 also worth to say it boost to 3013 mhz and stay there low I saw was 2995mhz!

Also I’m on 1440p but if select TAA i use scale up to 150 and that is equal to 4K!

4090 is great card but if you don’t do VR and you want to enjoy flying in great quality and save some cash and perhaps invest in better storage or controllers like yoke or memory use that money there!

I would suggest taking a Ram Kit with 6000 MHz, as it is the Sweet Spot for the new Ryzen 7000 CPUs.

e.g.
G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo (2 x 16GB, 6000 MHz, DDR5-RAM, DIMM)

I have a B650, 7800x3d, 4080 Suprim & 32gb 6000mhz ram and its quite simply amazing in MSFS at 1440p. I can fly around the most demanding cities and still pull 100+fps. The only issues i get are down to my internet connection which can be annoying - I highly recommend this set up though!

The 4090 is fantastic. I do fly in VR sometimes so it really shows it’s strength there, but in flat screen mode, it’s great too. I rarely see GPU usage get above 70% in all scenarios and this is with Frame generation enabled.

The 7950x3D is an absolute beast. With AI traffic disabled, Vatsim enabled (FSLTL & Justflight) at a moderately busy airport in a big city (EGLL), with the ultra preset in the Fenix, I’m getting around 80 FPS on the ground while taxiing, and upwards of 90 in the PMDG.

Just make sure to update your BIOS and Drivers and everything should work well. I disabled hyper threading (SMT) but not actually sure if it makes any difference.

Even if you don’t see much of an increase in fps it should always help with lows - in my case I actually run a higher boost clock with SMT off so I get both. However I also don’t have any other apps running alongside (except maybe OBS when recording) so for me eight cores/threads is plenty but if I had navigraph, AIG etc. running then I might think twice about it… Of course that’s probably not relevant for the 7950X.
