I’m about to finally give in a purchase a 4090 but I’m not the greatest with PC’s and slightly confused by the cable debacle, melting, adapters, etc,.
I was planning on getting the Corsair RM1000x and was just wondering what I needed to do, if anything in the way of sourcing cables to power the GPU.
Thanks for any advice.
I have the Corsair RM1000E power supply. But no 4090 GPU.
It comes with the 12 volt GPU power cable with the side pins.
The RM1000x includes it also.
“ATX 3.0 CERTIFIED
PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR GPU cables included for use with modern graphics cards such as the NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 40 Series.”
If I’m correct that’s a tier A PSU (here’s the current list at LTT forums), so I’d go for it. Nevertheless if you ask me, I’d go with at least a 1200W PSU considering that a 4090 is able to peak at 600W. You will have more overhead, and the PSU will be working more efficiently and cooler, which should prolong its lifespan.
Best,
Seb
As mentioned above, get the SHIFT version of the RM1000x. It’s an ATX 3.0 PSU and comes with a 12VHPWR cable. You just got to make sure your case is OK with having the PSU cables coming out of the side.
I use a RM1000x SHIFT with a 4090 FE. It’s 12VHPWR is rated at 450W. If you’re getting a heavily overclocked 4090, then get the 1200W SHIFT as it’s 12VHPWR is rated at 600W.
Brilliant thank you for your replies, I will go for the Shift PSU, so to confirm this comes with all required cables for the 4090?
I guess this is the cable that is included with it?
What would be the advantage of buying the Shift compared to the normal RM1000x and pruchasing this cable?
Yeh, SHIFT comes with the 12VHPWR cable so no need to buy it separately.
Other than side connections and ATX 3.0 spec, don’t know any other differences.
The Corsair website might have a tech spec comparison between different PSUs.

The only difference is that the “Shift” has the power cables coming out of the side of the supply.
Be sure that your case has the room for these.
There is a lot of cables.
