Anyone with a HP Omen 30l? Having no audio with Windows 2004 or 20h2

Hi,

I know this is primarily a forum for MSFS but I am a little desperate.

I have a HP Omen 30l with pretty good specs, that runs MSFS pretty well (Ryzen 9 3900, 32GB RAM, RTX 2080S).

However, I can’t update to Windows 10 2004 or 20h2, as I run into audio problems as soon as the update is installed. I simply get no sound at all system-wide despite all audio settings looking alright.

I was in contact with HP, and their customer service was useless. They simply said, that my hardware was not tested on 20h2, and so its not supported by 2004 nor 20h2. I find that pretty surprising, as the computer is not even a year old. As it is a so called “all-in-one” and preconfigured computer, others should have had the same problem. However, up until now, I couldn’t find a lot of information about people having the same problem.

Audio settings are all as they should and I tried pretty much every audio driver that is available. I even had it taken to a computer shop, and they couldn’t find any issue. On-board sound card is ok, speakers are flawless.

The only thing I can do, is to stay on version 1909 and to do a recovery every time I accidentally click on the wrong button when shutting down. That’s such a pain.

Does anyone have any tips, or know something out of the ordinary for me to do? I would be pretty thankful.

Hey Petz,

Since I was bored and had nothing better to do and am always interested in audio problems - dunno why - I googled a bit, and found this on a HP Omen 17 with similar complaints after updating Windows:

“In the device-manager under “system device” you have to right click and uninstall “Intel Smart Sound Technology-OED” and “Intel Smart Sound Technology-Audiocontroller” (The first was marked with an ! before). After that under “Action” do “Check for modified hardware”. And voilà: Sound is playing via internal speaker or headset. After that, do Windows Update and “HP Support Assistent” so that the realtek driver is properly installed.”

Might be worth a try to see if you have those Intel thingies?

I have an Omen 30L, about 1y old (but with Intel CPU). Running Windows 10 20H2, no audio problem.

Do yourself a favour and get a dedicated soundcard. My mobo has a ”premium” sound solution but I’ve put in a Soundblaster Z into my computer and I can hear sounds that were not there before.

Can’t do that with an Omen 30L, there are no PCI slots for expansion It’s quite uncertain that it would solve the original problem anyway.

Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated. However, I already tried that method a couple of months back. I did not work.

I might try and buy a cheap usb soundcard. Whatever works
