Application pause for 5-20 seconds every 5-10 minutes, new in SU5 beta 1.7.7 onward so far

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: The application will pause every ~5-10 minutes or so for between 5 and 20 seconds (rarely longer), the rest of the computer is fine during this pause, but the sim itself becomes frozen. If a control is held, when the sim returns it behaves as if it received that input the whole time. The result is hilarious if a control force is applied, but also surprise loop-de-loops are annoying in career mode. Its like it forgets its running for a little bit, almost timing out, then comes back. The rest of the computer is unaffected.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

The problem happens any time the sim is in use, even if left in the loading screen, any menu screen, and in flight between every 5 and 10 minutes. Aircraft doesn’t matter, location doesn’t matter, time doesn’t matter. It does not happen in any other game or application or situation outside of the sim. There is no antivirus or anything running after start up into the sim. The sim is fully stock with an empty community folder. The sim version 1.7.9.0 has been reinstalled from scratch to try to eliminate the problem, to no effect.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. started the sim, waited for it to happen at any point.

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

What peripherals are you using: saitek panel and throttle quadrant plus usb vkb joystick

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

updated and used just for frame rate, but the problem happens on or off.

[PC Only] What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use?

7900xtx 24gb

TAA only, no FG, Fluid Motion Frames 2.1 turned off at the driver (doesn’t change on or off anyway)

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

AMD 7900XTX 24GB 9800x3d 64gb 6000 ddr5 with AMD adrenaline 26.2.2 (but tested back to 25.12 just to test if it was a driver issue). The issue began with the update to SU5 1.7.7 and continues in 1.7.9.

MEDIA

Please add a screenshot or video of the issue occurring.

first image is just after a freeze, the numbers are during normal operation, temps are fine and the sim used to run completely normally without that drop.

this is what happens during a sim freeze.

Having this issue too. @jonasbeaver In Task Manager, did you also notice how CPU usage drops to zero during it? For me, it happens even more frequently.

You can sort of see a little change in the two charts: temps are 4c lower and voltage is .2v lower. From my experience, CPU load drops significantly (below 10% when normally CPU load is stable at around 50% in the sim) as well, this was just the most data I could get most easily. I will post cpu stats when I fire it up again. Nothing listed in task manager takes any percentage of cpu while its frozen, and while the sim is frozen the rest of the computer runs smoothly. This has been tested with nothing at all open to videos on a second screen to external addons - that all continue to run fine in the background.

I may have solved my own problem. After I had forced a reinstall, and none of my stock packages had updated, nor provided warning that an update is available. I download most of my packages. By uninstalling the 172 and 737 and re-downloading and reinstalling, they had new version numbers and the freezing has gone away. It would be nice if one has out of date packages if there was a way to see that in the library.

Still having this issue.

CPU utilization completely tanks for 20 seconds and the sim absolutely freezes, and this is a SU5 March build specific issue. I haven’t heard much besides 2 people having this issue.

After switching back to SU4, it seems like this issue has disappeared.

Same here with different addons.

Freeze for a split second or even several seconds.
Longest freeze was probably 4 seconds.

But happens very frequently, was never a thing with SU4.
Its not just every 5 to 10 minutes like the OP says, its very random. Sometimes more often, several times in a minute, then some minutes not.

Can’t see any pattern.

I have the same issue since 1.7.7. Other than the CPU and GPU drop to zero, I noticed that device manager page refreshes in sync. This might indicate some device change. Have tested with empty community folder and all devices except keyboard and mouse disconnected and reproduced issue in Asobo 172.

One way to reproduce these symptoms is to turn a device off or on. A wireless keyboard turned off behaves differently for me in 1.7.7 than in su4. In su4, there is a momentary stutter with the gpu drop. In 1.77 this becomes a freeze of at least a few seconds - which in itself is not an issue. There is reference to peripheral handling changes in the release notice for 1.7.7.

Reverted back to SU4 and done the exact same flight and issue is gone

Based off the tests I did recently, this can quite literally happen anywhere. Doesn’t matter on the aircraft, doesn’t matter if it’s in the menu.

One thing I can conclude is that this is not a flight environment nor menu screen environment issue, but this HAS to be an issue on how the game handles this. Like the actual computer process itself.

Oddly, MSFS also has this same behavior if you unplug and plug back in a device. As @PhileasFogg8669 said, this might indicate a device change. Usually, when you plug in a device to MSFS (both 2020 and 2024 versions, but I’m focusing on 2024) the game freezes to resync all the devices. This has similar behavior. Maybe the sim is detecting something that’s not there at all? Or it is just probably something else with the sim logic.

Same issue. Happens randomly. Sometimes even when on the ground and doing checklists.
